And so, the lot of the sons of Judah, by their families, was this: from the border of Edom, to the desert of Sin toward the south, and even to the furthest part of the southern region.1 Voici la part qui échut par le sort aux enfants de Juda selon leurs familles (parenté). Les limites de leur territoire sont depuis Edom, le désert de Sin vers le midi, jusqu'à l'extrémité de la contrée méridionale.
Its beginning was from the summit of the very salty sea, and from its bay, which looks toward the south.2 Il commence à l'extrémité de la mer (très) salée, et à cette langue de mer qui regarde le midi.
And it extends toward the ascent of the Scorpion, and it passes on to Sinai. And it ascends into Kadesh-barnea, and it passes through to Hezron, ascending to Addar, and encompassing Karka.3 Il s'étend vers la montée du Scorpion et passe jusqu'à Sina. Il monte vers Cadèsbarné, vient jusqu'à Esron, monte vers Addar, et tourne vers Carcaa ;
And from there, it passes on to Azmon, and reaches to the torrent of Egypt. And its boundary shall be the great sea; this shall be the limit of the southern region.4 et, passant de là jusqu'à Asémona, il arrive jusqu'au torrent d'Egypte, et se termine à la grande mer. Ce sont là ses limites du côté du midi.
Yet truly, toward the east, the beginning shall be the very salty sea, even to the limit of the Jordan, and that which looks toward the north, from the bay of the sea, even to the same river Jordan.5 (Mais) Du côté de l'orient la tribu de Juda commence à la mer (très) salée, et s'étend jusqu'à l'extrémité du Jourdain ; et du côté de l'aquilon, depuis la langue de mer jusqu'au même fleuve du Jourdain.
And the border ascends into Beth-hoglah, and it crosses from the north into Beth-Arabah, ascending to the stone of Bohan, the son of Reuben.6 Sa frontière monte à Beth-Hagla, passe de l'aquilon à Beth-Araba, monte à la pierre de Boën, fils de Ruben,
And it reaches as far as the borders of Debara, from the Valley of Achor, to the north, looking toward Gilgal, which is opposite the Ascent of Adummim, on the southern part of the torrent. And it crosses the waters that are called the Fountain of the Sun. And its exit shall be at the Fountain of Rogel.7 et s'étend jusqu'à Débéra, de la vallée d'Achor. Vers le septentrion elle regarde Galgala, qui est vis-à-vis de la montée d'Adommim, au sud du torrent ; elle passe les eaux qui s'appellent la fontaine du Soleil, et vient se terminer à la fontaine de Rogel.
And it ascends by the steep valley of the son of Hinnom, from the side of the Jebusite, toward the south; this is Jerusalem. And from there, it raises itself to the top of the mountain, which is opposite Geennom to the west, at the top of the Valley of the Rephaim, to the north.8 Elle monte (aussi) par la vallée du fils d'Ennom au côté méridional du pays des Jébuséens, où est la ville de Jérusalem ; et de là, montant jusqu'en haut de la montagne qui est vis-à-vis de Géennom à l'occident, à l'extrémité de la vallée des Géants (Raphaïm) vers l'aquilon,
And it passes through, from the top of the mountain, even to the fountain of the Water of Nephtoah. And it continues on, as far as the villages of mount Ephron. And it inclines toward Baalah, which is Kiriath-jearim, that is, the City of Forests.9 elle passe depuis le haut de la montagne jusqu'à la fontaine de Nephtoa, et s'étend jusqu'aux villages du mont Ephron. Elle descend ensuite vers Baala, qui est Cariathiarim, c'est-à-dire la ville des forêts ;
And it circles from Baalah, to the west, as far as mount Seir. And it passes by the side of mount Jearim, to the north, into Chesalon. And it descends into Beth-shemesh, and it passes through to Timnah.10 et de Baala tourne vers l'occident jusqu'à la montagne de Séir, passe à côté du mont Jarim au septentrion vers Cheslon, descend vers Bethsamès, passe jusqu'à Thamna,
And it continues on, toward the north, to a region beside Ekron. And it inclines toward Shikkeron, and it crosses to mount Baalah. And it extends into Jabneel, and the last part closes at the west with the great sea.11 vient vers le côté septentrional d'Accaron, descend vers Séchrona, passe le mont Baala, s'étend jusqu'à Jebnéel, et se termine enfin du côté de l'occident par la grande mer.
These are the borders of the sons of Judah, in their families, on all sides.12 Telles sont les limites des enfants de Juda de tous côtés selon leurs familles.
Yet truly, to Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, he gave a portion in the midst of the sons of Judah, just as the Lord had instructed him: the City of Arba, the father of Anak, which is Hebron.13 Mais Josué, suivant l'ordonnance du Seigneur, donna à Caleb, fils de Jéphoné, pour son partage au milieu des enfants de Juda, Cariath-Arbé, ville du père d'Enac, qui est la ville d'Hébron.
And Caleb destroyed from it the three sons of Anak, Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai, of the stock of Anak.14 Et Caleb extermina de cette ville les trois enfants d'Enac, Sésaï, Ahiman et Tholmaï, de la race d'Enac ;
And ascending further from there, he came to the inhabitants of Debir, which before was called Kiriath-Sepher, that is, the City of Letters.15 et, montant de ce lieu, il marcha vers les habitants de Dabir, qui s'appelait auparavant Cariath-Sépher, c'est-à-dire (la) Ville des lettres.
And Caleb said, “Whoever will have struck down Kiriath-Sepher, and will have seized it, I will give to him Achsah, my daughter, as wife.”16 Et Caleb dit : Je donnerai ma fille Axa en mariage à quiconque prendra et détruira Cariath-Sépher.
And Othniel, the son of Kenaz, the younger brother of Caleb, seized it. And he gave him Achsah, his daughter, as wife.17 Othoniel, fils de Cénez et jeune frère de Caleb, la prit, et il lui donna sa fille Axa pour femme.
And as they were traveling together, she was urged by her husband that she ask her father for a field. And she sighed, as she was sitting on her donkey. And Caleb said to her, “What is it?”18 Et tandis qu'ils marchaient ensemble, son mari lui conseilla de demander un champ à son père. Axa, étant donc montée sur un âne, se mit à soupirer : et Caleb lui dit : Qu'as-tu ?
But she answered: “Give a blessing to me. You have given to me a southern and dry land; join to it also a watered land.” And so Caleb gave to her the watered land above and below it.19 (Et) Elle lui répondit : Donne-moi une bénédiction (Accorde-moi une grâce). Tu m'as donné une terre exposée au midi et toute sèche ; ajoutes-en une autre où il y ait des eaux en abondance. Caleb lui donna donc en haut et en bas des lieux arrosés d'eau.
This is the possession of the tribe of the sons of Judah, by their families.20 C'est là l'héritage de la tribu des enfants de Juda divisé selon ses familles.
And the cities, from the furthest parts of the sons of Judah, beside the borders of Edom to the south, were: Kabzeel and Eder and Jagur,21 Vers l'extrémité de la terre des enfants de Juda, le long des frontières d'Edom, du côté du midi, les villes sont (étaient) Cabséel, Eder et Jagur,
