| 1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons. | 1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all God's holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi, togetherwith their presiding elders and the deacons. |
| 2 Grace and peace to you, from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. | 2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. |
| 3 I give thanks to my God, with every remembrance of you, | 3 I thank my God whenever I think of you, |
| 4 always, in all my prayers, making supplication for all of you with joy, | 4 and every time I pray for you al , I always pray with joy |
| 5 because of your communion in the Gospel of Christ, from the first day even until now. | 5 for your partnership in the gospel from the very first day up to the present. |
| 6 I am confident of this very thing: that he who has begun this good work in you will perfect it, unto the day of Christ Jesus. | 6 I am quite confident that the One who began a good work in you wil go on completing it until the Day ofJesus Christ comes. |
| 7 So then, it is right for me to feel this way about all of you, because I hold you in my heart, and because, in my chains and in the defense and confirmation of the Gospel, you all are partakers of my joy. | 7 It is only right that I should feel like this towards you all, because you have a place in my heart, sinceyou have all shared together in the grace that has been mine, both my chains and my work defending andestablishing the gospel. |
| 8 For God is my witness how, within the heart of Jesus Christ, I long for all of you. | 8 For God wil testify for me how much I long for you al with the warm longing of Christ Jesus; |
| 9 And this I pray: that your charity may abound more and more, with knowledge and with all understanding, | 9 it is my prayer that your love for one another may grow more and more with the knowledge andcomplete understanding |
| 10 so that you may be confirmed in what is better, in order that you may be sincere and without offense on the day of Christ: | 10 that will help you to come to true discernment, so that you wil be innocent and free of any trace of guiltwhen the Day of Christ comes, |
| 11 filled with the fruit of justice, through Jesus Christ, in the glory and praise of God. | 11 entirely fil ed with the fruits of uprightness through Jesus Christ, for the glory and praise of God. |
| 12 Now, brothers, I want you to know that the things concerning me happened for the advancement of the Gospel, | 12 Now I want you to realise, brothers, that the circumstances of my present life are helping rather thanhindering the advance of the gospel. |
| 13 in such a way that my chains have become manifest in Christ in every place of judgment and in all other such places. | 13 My chains in Christ have become wel known not only to al the Praetorium, but to everybody else, |
| 14 And many from among the brothers in the Lord, becoming confident through my chains, are now much bolder in speaking the Word of God without fear. | 14 and so most of the brothers in the Lord have gained confidence from my chains and are getting moreand more daring in announcing the Message without any fear. |
| 15 Certainly, some do so even because of envy and contention; and others, too, do so because of a good will to preach Christ. | 15 It is true that some of them are preaching Christ out of malice and rivalry; but there are many as welwhose intentions are good; |
| 16 Some act out of charity, knowing that I have been appointed for the defense of the Gospel. | 16 some are doing it out of love, knowing that I remain firm in my defence of the gospel. |
| 17 But others, out of contention, announce Christ insincerely, claiming that their difficulties lift them up to my chains. | 17 There are others who are proclaiming Christ out of jealousy, not in sincerity but meaning to add to theweight of my chains. |
| 18 But what does it matter? As long as, by every means, whether under pretext or in truthfulness, Christ is announced. And about this, I rejoice, and moreover, I will continue to rejoice. | 18 But what does it matter? Only that in both ways, whether with false motives or true, Christ isproclaimed, and for that I am happy; |
| 19 For I know that this will bring me to salvation, through your prayers and under the ministration of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, | 19 and I shal go on being happy, too, because I know that this is what wil save me, with your prayers andwith the support of the Spirit of Jesus Christ; |
| 20 by means of my own expectation and hope. For in nothing shall I be confounded. Instead, with all confidence, now just as always, Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. | 20 al in accordance with my most confident hope and trust that I shal never have to admit defeat, but withcomplete fearlessness I shall go on, so that now, as always, Christ wil be glorified in my body, whether by mylife or my death. |
| 21 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. | 21 Life to me, of course, is Christ, but then death would be a positive gain. |
| 22 And while I live in the flesh, for me, there is the fruit of works. But I do not know which I would choose. | 22 On the other hand again, if to be alive in the body gives me an opportunity for fruitful work, I do notknow which I should choose. |
| 23 For I am constrained between the two: having a desire to be dissolved and to be with Christ, which is the far better thing, | 23 I am caught in this dilemma: I want to be gone and to be with Christ, and this is by far the strongerdesire- |
| 24 but then to remain in the flesh is necessary for your sake. | 24 and yet for your sake to stay alive in this body is a more urgent need. |
| 25 And having this confidence, I know that I shall remain and that I shall continue to remain with all of you, for your advancement and for your joy in the faith, | 25 This much I know for certain, that I shal stay and stand by you al , to encourage your advance andyour joy in the faith, |
| 26 so that your rejoicing may abound in Christ Jesus for me, through my return to you again. | 26 so that my return to be among you may increase to overflowing your pride in Jesus Christ on myaccount. |
| 27 Only let your behavior be worthy of the Gospel of Christ, so that, whether I return and see you, or whether, being absent, I hear about you, still you may stand firm with one spirit, with one mind, laboring together for the faith of the Gospel. | 27 But you must always behave in a way that is worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come toyou and see for myself or whether I only hear al about you from a distance, I shall find that you are standing firmand united in spirit, battling, as a team with a single aim, for the faith of the gospel, |
| 28 And in nothing be terrified by the adversaries. For what is to them is an occasion of perdition, is to you an occasion of salvation, and this is from God. | 28 undismayed by any of your opponents. This will be a clear sign, for them that they are to be lost, andfor you that you are to be saved. |
| 29 For this has been given to you on behalf of Christ, not only so that you may believe in him, but even so that you may suffer with him, | 29 This comes from God, for you have been granted the privilege for Christ's sake not only of believing inhim but of suffering for him as wel ; |
| 30 engaging in the same struggle, of a kind which you also have seen in me, and which you now have heard from me. | 30 you are fighting the same battle which you saw me fighting for him and which you hear I am fightingstill. |
