CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINEL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
After these things, Jesus traveled across the sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias.1 Después de esto, Jesús atravesó el mar de Galilea, llamado Tiberíades.
And a great multitude was following him, for they saw the signs that he was accomplishing toward those who were infirm.2 Lo seguía una gran multitud, al ver los signos que hacía curando a los enfermos.
Therefore, Jesus went onto a mountain, and he sat down there with his disciples.3 Jesús subió a la montaña y se sentó allí con sus discípulos.
Now the Passover, the feast day of the Jews, was near.4 Se acercaba la Pascua, la fiesta de los judíos.
And so, when Jesus had lifted up his eyes and had seen that a very great multitude came to him, he said to Philip, “From where should we buy bread, so that these may eat?”5 Al levantar los ojos, Jesús vio que una gran multitud acudía a él y dijo a Felipe: «¿Dónde compraremos pan para darles de comer?».
But he said this to test him. For he himself knew what he would do.6 El decía esto para ponerlo a prueba, porque sabía bien lo que iba a hacer.
Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii of bread would not be sufficient for each of them to receive even a little.”7 Felipe le respondió: «Doscientos denarios no bastarían para que cada uno pudiera comer un pedazo de pan».
One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him:8 Uno de sus discípulos, Andrés, el hermano de Simón Pedro, le dijo:
“There is a certain boy here, who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are these among so many?”9 «Aquí hay un niño que tiene cinco panes de cebada y dos pescados, pero ¿qué es esto para tanta gente?».
Then Jesus said, “Have the men sit down to eat.” Now, there was much grass in that place. And so the men, in number about five thousand, sat down to eat.10 Jesús le respondió: «Háganlos sentar». Había mucho pasto en ese lugar. Todos se sentaron y eran uno cinco mil hombres.
Therefore, Jesus took the bread, and when he had given thanks, he distributed it to those who were sitting down to eat; similarly also, from the fish, as much as they wanted.11 Jesús tomó los panes, dio gracias y los distribuyó a los que estaban sentados. Lo mismo hizo con los pescados, dándoles todo lo que quisieron.
Then, when they were filled, he said to his disciples, “Gather the fragments that are left over, lest they be lost.”12 Cuando todos quedaron satisfechos, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: «Recojan los pedazos que sobran, para que no se pierda nada».
And so they gathered, and they filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which were left over from those who had eaten.13 Los recogieron y llenaron doce canastas con los pedazos que sobraron de los cinco panes de cebada.
Therefore, those men, when they had seen that Jesus had accomplished a sign, they said, “Truly, this one is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”14 Al ver el signo que Jesús acababa de hacer, la gente decía: «Este es, verdaderamente, el Profeta que debe venir al mundo».
And so, when he realized that they were going to come and take him away and make him king, Jesus fled back to the mountain, by himself alone.15 Jesús, sabiendo que querían apoderarse de él para hacerlo rey, se retiró otra vez solo a la montaña.
Then, when evening arrived, his disciples descended to the sea.16 Al atardecer, sus discípulos bajaron a la orilla del mar
And when they had climbed into a boat, they went across the sea to Capernaum. And darkness had now arrived, and Jesus had not returned to them.17 y se embarcaron, para dirigirse a Cafarnaúm, que está en la otra orilla. Ya era de noche y Jesús aún no se había reunido con ellos.
Then the sea was stirred up by a great wind that was blowing.18 El mar estaba agitado, porque soplaba un fuerte viento.
And so, when they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they saw Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing near to the boat, and they were afraid.19 Cuando habían remado unos cinco kilómetros, vieron a Jesús acercarse a la barca caminando sobre el agua, y tuvieron miedo.
But he said to them: “It is I. Do not be afraid.”20 El les dijo: «Soy yo, no teman».
Therefore, they were willing to receive him into the boat. But immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.21 Ellos quisieron subirlo a la barca, pero esta tocó tierra en seguida en el lugar adonde iban
On the next day, the crowd which was standing across the sea saw that there were no other small boats in that place, except one, and that Jesus had not entered into the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had departed alone.22 Al día siguiente, la multitud que se había quedado en la otra orilla vio que Jesús no había subido con sus discípulos en la única barca que había allí, sino que ellos habían partido solos.
Yet truly, other boats came over from Tiberias, next to the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord gave thanks.23 Mientras tanto, unas barcas de Tiberíades atracaron cerca del lugar donde habían comido el pan, después que el Señor pronunció la acción de gracias.
Therefore, when the crowd had seen that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they climbed into the small boats, and they went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.24 Cuando la multitud se dio cuenta de que Jesús y sus discípulos no estaban allí, subieron a las barcas y fueron a Cafarnaúm en busca de Jesús.
And when they had found him across the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”25 Al encontrarlo en la otra orilla, le preguntaron: «Maestro, ¿cuándo llegaste?».
Jesus answered them and said: “Amen, amen, I say to you, you seek me, not because you have seen signs, but because you have eaten from the bread and were satisfied.26 Jesús les respondió: «Les aseguro que ustedes me buscan, no porque vieron signos, sino porque han comido pan hasta saciarse.
Do not work for food that perishes, but for that which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you. For God the Father has sealed him.”27 Trabajen, no por el alimento perecedero, sino por el que permanece hasta la Vida eterna, el que les dará el Hijo del hombre; porque es él a quien Dios, el Padre, marcó con su sello».
Therefore, they said to him, “What should we do, so that we may labor in the works of God?”28 Ellos le preguntaron: «¿Qué debemos hacer para realizar las obras de Dios?».
Jesus responded and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he sent.”29 Jesús les respondió: «La obra de Dios es que ustedes crean en aquel que él ha enviado».
And so they said to him: “Then what sign will you do, so that we may see it and believe in you? What will you work?30 Y volvieron a preguntarle: «¿Qué signos haces para que veamos y creamos en ti? ¿Qué obra realizas?
Our fathers ate manna in the desert, just as it has been written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”31 Nuestros padres comieron el maná en el desierto, como dice la Escritura: Les dio de comer el pan bajado del cielo».
Therefore, Jesus said to them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, Moses did not give you bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.32 Jesús respondió: «Les aseguro que no es Moisés el que les dio el pan del cielo; mi Padre les da el verdadero pan del cielo;
For the bread of God is he who descends from heaven and gives life to the world.”33 porque el pan de Dios es el que desciende del cielo y da Vida al mundo».
And so they said to him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”34 Ellos le dijeron: «Señor, danos siempre de ese pan».
Then Jesus said to them: “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.35 Jesús les respondió: «Yo soy el pan de Vida. El que viene a mí jamás tendrá hambre; el que cree en mí jamás tendrá sed.
But I say to you, that even though you have seen me, you do not believe.36 Pero ya les he dicho: ustedes me han visto y sin embargo no creen.
All that the Father gives to me shall come to me. And whoever comes to me, I will not cast out.37 Todo lo que me da el Padre viene a mí, y al que venga a mí yo no lo rechazaré,
For I descended from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.38 porque he bajado del cielo, no para hacer mi voluntad, sino la del que me envió.
Yet this is the will of the Father who sent me: that I should lose nothing out of all that he has given to me, but that I should raise them up on the last day.39 La voluntad del que me ha enviado es que yo no pierda nada de lo que él me dio, sino que lo resucite en el último día.
So then, this is the will of my Father who sent me: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”40 Esta es la voluntad de mi Padre: que el que ve al Hijo y cree en él, tenga Vida eterna y que yo lo resucite en el último día».
Therefore, the Jews murmured about him, because he had said: “I am the living bread, who descended from heaven.”41 Los judíos murmuraban de él, porque había dicho: «Yo soy el pan bajado del cielo».
And they said: “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? Then how can he say: ‘For I descended from heaven?’ ”42 Y decían: «¿Acaso este no es Jesús, el hijo de José? Nosotros conocemos a su padre y a su madre. ¿Cómo puede decir ahora: «Yo he bajado del cielo»?
And so Jesus responded and said to them: “Do not choose to murmur among yourselves.43 Jesús tomó la palabra y les dijo: «No murmuren entre ustedes.
No one is able to come to me, unless the Father, who has sent me, has drawn him. And I will raise him up on the last day.44 Nadie puede venir a mí, si no lo atrae el Padre que me envió; y yo lo resucitaré en el último día.
It has been written in the Prophets: ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has listened and learned from the Father comes to me.45 Está escrito en el libro de los Profetas: "Todos serán instruidos por Dios". Todo el que oyó al Padre y recibe su enseñanza, viene a mí.
Not that anyone has seen the Father, except he who is from God; this one has seen the Father.46 Nadie ha visto nunca al Padre, sino el que viene de Dios: sólo él ha visto al Padre.
Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me has eternal life.47 Les aseguro que el que cree, tiene Vida eterna.
I am the bread of life.48 Yo soy el pan de Vida.
Your fathers ate manna in the desert, and they died.49 Sus padres, en el desierto, comieron el maná y murieron.
This is the bread which descends from heaven, so that if anyone will eat from it, he may not die.50 Pero este es el pan que desciende del cielo, para que aquel que lo coma no muera.
I am the living bread, who descended from heaven.51 Yo soy el pan vivo bajado del cielo. El que coma de este pan vivirá eternamente, y el pan que yo daré es mi carne para la Vida del mundo».
If anyone eats from this bread, he shall live in eternity. And the bread that I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world.”52 Los judíos discutían entre sí, diciendo: «¿Cómo este hombre puede darnos a comer su carne?».
Therefore, the Jews debated among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”53 Jesús les respondió: «Les aseguro que si no comen la carne del Hijo del hombre y no beben su sangre, no tendrán Vida en ustedes.
And so, Jesus said to them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you will not have life in you.54 El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre tiene Vida eterna, y yo lo resucitaré en el último día.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.55 Porque mi carne es la verdadera comida y mi sangre, la verdadera bebida.
For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.56 El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre permanece en mí y yo en él.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.57 Así como yo, que he sido enviado por el Padre que tiene Vida, vivo por el Padre, de la misma manera, el que me come vivirá por mí.
Just as the living Father has sent me and I live because of the Father, so also whoever eats me, the same shall live because of me.58 Este es el pan bajado del cielo; no como el que comieron sus padres y murieron. El que coma de este pan vivirá eternamente».
This is the bread that descends from heaven. It is not like the manna that your fathers ate, for they died. Whoever eats this bread shall live forever.”59 Jesús enseñaba todo esto en la sinagoga de Cafarnaúm.
He said these things when he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum.60 Después de oírlo, muchos de sus discípulos decían: «¡Es duro este lenguaje! ¿Quién puede escucharlo?».
Therefore, many of his disciples, upon hearing this, said: “This saying is difficult,” and, “Who is able to listen to it?”61 Jesús, sabiendo lo que sus discípulos murmuraban, les dijo: «¿Esto los escandaliza?
But Jesus, knowing within himself that his disciples were murmuring about this, said to them: “Does this offend you?62 ¿Qué pasará entonces, cuando vean al Hijo del hombre subir donde estaba antes?
Then what if you were to see the Son of man ascending to where he was before?63 El Espíritu es el que da Vida, la carne de nada sirve. Las palabras que les dije son Espíritu y Vida.
It is the Spirit who gives life. The flesh does not offer anything of benefit. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.64 Pero hay entre ustedes algunos que no creen». En efecto, Jesús sabía desde el primer momento quiénes eran los que no creían y quién era el que lo iba a entregar.
But there are some among you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who were unbelieving and which one would betray him.65 Y agregó: «Por eso les he dicho que nadie puede venir a mí, si el Padre no se lo concede».
And so he said, “For this reason, I said to you that no one is able to come to me, unless it has been given to him by my Father.”66 Desde ese momento, muchos de sus discípulos se alejaron de él y dejaron de acompañarlo.
After this, many of his disciples went back, and they no longer walked with him.67 Jesús preguntó entonces a los Doce: «¿También ustedes quieren irse?».
Therefore, Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?”68 Simón Pedro le respondió: «Señor, ¿a quién iremos? Tú tienes palabras de Vida eterna.
Then Simon Peter answered him: “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.69 Nosotros hemos creído y sabemos que eres el Santo de Dios».
And we have believed, and we recognize that you are the Christ, the Son of God.”70 Jesús continuó: «¿No soy yo, acaso, el que los eligió a ustedes, los Doce? Sin embargo, uno de ustedes es un demonio».
Jesus answered them: “Have I not chosen you twelve? And yet one among you is a devil.”71 Jesús hablaba de Judas, hijo de Simón Iscariote, que era uno de los Doce, el que lo iba a entregar.
Now he was speaking about Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. For this one, even though he was one of the twelve, was about to betray him.
