After these things, Jesus traveled across the sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias.1 Después de esto, se fue Jesús a la otra ribera del mar de Galilea, el de Tiberíades,
And a great multitude was following him, for they saw the signs that he was accomplishing toward those who were infirm.2 y mucha gente le seguía porque veían las señales que realizaba en los enfermos.
Therefore, Jesus went onto a mountain, and he sat down there with his disciples.3 Subió Jesús al monte y se sentó allí en compañía de sus discípulos.
Now the Passover, the feast day of the Jews, was near.4 Estaba próxima la Pascua, la fiesta de los judíos.
And so, when Jesus had lifted up his eyes and had seen that a very great multitude came to him, he said to Philip, “From where should we buy bread, so that these may eat?”5 Al levantar Jesús los ojos y ver que venía hacia él mucha gente, dice a Felipe: «¿Donde vamos a comprar panes para que coman éstos?»
But he said this to test him. For he himself knew what he would do.6 Se lo decía para probarle, porque él sabía lo que iba a hacer.
Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii of bread would not be sufficient for each of them to receive even a little.”7 Felipe le contestó: «Doscientos denarios de pan no bastan para que cada uno tome un poco».
One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him:8 Le dice uno de sus discípulos, Andrés, el hermano de Simón Pedro:
“There is a certain boy here, who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are these among so many?”9 «Aquí hay un muchacho que tiene cinco panes de cebada y dos peces; pero ¿qué es eso para tantos?»
Then Jesus said, “Have the men sit down to eat.” Now, there was much grass in that place. And so the men, in number about five thousand, sat down to eat.10 Dijo Jesús: «Haced que se recueste la gente». Había en el lugar mucha hierba. Se recostaron, pues, los hombres en número de unos 5.000.
Therefore, Jesus took the bread, and when he had given thanks, he distributed it to those who were sitting down to eat; similarly also, from the fish, as much as they wanted.11 Tomó entonces Jesús los panes y, después de dar gracias, los repartió entre los que estaban recostados y lo mismo los peces, todo lo que quisieron.
Then, when they were filled, he said to his disciples, “Gather the fragments that are left over, lest they be lost.”12 Cuando se saciaron, dice a sus discípulos: «Recoged los trozos sobrantes para que nada se pierda».
And so they gathered, and they filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which were left over from those who had eaten.13 Los recogieron, pues, y llenaron doce canastos con los trozos de los cinco panes de cebada que sobraron a los que habían comido.
Therefore, those men, when they had seen that Jesus had accomplished a sign, they said, “Truly, this one is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”14 Al ver la gente la señal que había realizado, decía: «Este es verdaderamente el profeta que iba a venir al mundo».
And so, when he realized that they were going to come and take him away and make him king, Jesus fled back to the mountain, by himself alone.15 Dándose cuenta Jesús de que intentaban venir a tomarle por la fuerza para hacerle rey, huyó de nuevo al monte él solo.
Then, when evening arrived, his disciples descended to the sea.16 Al atardecer, bajaron sus discípulos a la orilla del mar,
And when they had climbed into a boat, they went across the sea to Capernaum. And darkness had now arrived, and Jesus had not returned to them.17 y subiendo a una barca, se dirigían al otro lado del mar, a Cafarnaúm. Había ya oscurecido, y Jesús todavía no había venido donde ellos;
Then the sea was stirred up by a great wind that was blowing.18 soplaba un fuerte viento y el mar comenzó a encresparse.
And so, when they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they saw Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing near to the boat, and they were afraid.19 Cuando habían remado unos veinticinco o treinta estadios, ven a Jesús que caminaba sobre el mar y se acercaba a la barca, y tuvieron miedo.
But he said to them: “It is I. Do not be afraid.”20 Pero él les dijo: «Soy yo. No temáis».
Therefore, they were willing to receive him into the boat. But immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.21 Quisieron recogerle en la barca, pero en seguida la barca tocó tierra en el lugar a donde se dirigían.
On the next day, the crowd which was standing across the sea saw that there were no other small boats in that place, except one, and that Jesus had not entered into the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had departed alone.22 Al día siguiente, la gente que se había quedado al otro lado del mar, vio que allí no había más que una barca y que Jesús no había montado en la barca con sus discípulos, sino que los discípulos se habían marchado solos.
Yet truly, other boats came over from Tiberias, next to the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord gave thanks.23 Pero llegaron barcas de Tiberíades cerca del lugar donde habían comido pan.
Therefore, when the crowd had seen that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they climbed into the small boats, and they went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.24 Cuando la gente vio que Jesús no estaba allí, ni tampoco sus discípulos, subieron a las barcas y fueron a Cafarnaúm, en busca de Jesús.
And when they had found him across the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”25 Al encontrarle a la orilla del mar, le dijeron: «Rabbí, ¿cuándo has llegado aquí?»
Jesus answered them and said: “Amen, amen, I say to you, you seek me, not because you have seen signs, but because you have eaten from the bread and were satisfied.26 Jesús les respondió: «En verdad, en verdad os digo: vosotros me buscáis, no porque habéis visto señales, sino porque habéis comido de los panes y os habéis saciado.
Do not work for food that perishes, but for that which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you. For God the Father has sealed him.”27 Obrad, no por el alimento perecedero, sino por el alimento que permanece para vida eterna, el que os dará el Hijo del hombre, porque a éste es a quien el Padre, Dios, ha marcado con su sello».
Therefore, they said to him, “What should we do, so that we may labor in the works of God?”28 Ellos le dijeron: «¿Qué hemos de hacer para obrar las obras de Dios?»
Jesus responded and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he sent.”29 Jesús les respondió: «La obra de Dios es que creáis en quien él ha enviado».
And so they said to him: “Then what sign will you do, so that we may see it and believe in you? What will you work?30 Ellos entonces le dijeron: «¿Qué señal haces para que viéndola creamos en ti? ¿Qué obra realizas?
Our fathers ate manna in the desert, just as it has been written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”31 Nuestros padres comieron el maná en el desierto, según está escrito: Pan del cielo les dio a comer».
Therefore, Jesus said to them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, Moses did not give you bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.32 Jesús les respondió: «En verdad, en verdad os digo: No fue Moisés quien os dio el pan del cielo; es mi Padre el que os da el verdadero pan del cielo;
For the bread of God is he who descends from heaven and gives life to the world.”33 porque el pan de Dios es el que baja del cielo y da la vida al mundo».
And so they said to him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”34 Entonces le dijeron: «Señor, danos siempre de ese pan».
Then Jesus said to them: “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.35 Les dijo Jesús: «Yo soy el pan de la vida. El que venga a mí, no tendrá hambre, y el que crea en mí, no tendrá nunca sed.
But I say to you, that even though you have seen me, you do not believe.36 Pero ya os lo he dicho: Me habéis visto y no creéis.
All that the Father gives to me shall come to me. And whoever comes to me, I will not cast out.37 Todo lo que me dé el Padre vendrá a mí, y al que venga a mí no lo echaré fuera;
For I descended from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.38 porque he bajado del cielo, no para hacer mi voluntad, sino la voluntad del que me ha enviado.
Yet this is the will of the Father who sent me: that I should lose nothing out of all that he has given to me, but that I should raise them up on the last day.39 Y esta es la voluntad del que me ha enviado; que no pierda nada de lo que él me ha dado, sino que lo resucite el último día.
So then, this is the will of my Father who sent me: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”40 Porque esta es la voluntad de mi Padre: que todo el que vea al Hijo y crea en él, tenga vida eterna y que yo le resucite el último día».
Therefore, the Jews murmured about him, because he had said: “I am the living bread, who descended from heaven.”41 Los judíos murmuraban de él, porque había dicho: «Yo soy el pan que ha bajado del cielo».
And they said: “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? Then how can he say: ‘For I descended from heaven?’ ”42 Y decían: «¿No es éste Jesús, hijo de José, cuyo padre y madre conocemos? ¿Cómo puede decir ahora: He bajado del cielo?»
And so Jesus responded and said to them: “Do not choose to murmur among yourselves.43 Jesús les respondió: «No murmuréis entre vosotros.
No one is able to come to me, unless the Father, who has sent me, has drawn him. And I will raise him up on the last day.44 «Nadie puede venir a mí, si el Padre que me ha enviado no lo atrae; y yo le resucitaré el último día.
It has been written in the Prophets: ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has listened and learned from the Father comes to me.45 Está escrito en los profetas: Serán todos enseñados por Dios. Todo el que escucha al Padre y aprende, viene a mí.
Not that anyone has seen the Father, except he who is from God; this one has seen the Father.46 No es que alguien haya visto al Padre; sino aquel que ha venido de Dios, ése ha visto al Padre.
Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me has eternal life.47 En verdad, en verdad os digo: el que cree, tiene vida eterna.
I am the bread of life.48 Yo soy el pan de la vida.
Your fathers ate manna in the desert, and they died.49 Vuestros padres comieron el maná en el desierto y murieron;
This is the bread which descends from heaven, so that if anyone will eat from it, he may not die.50 este es el pan que baja del cielo, para que quien lo coma no muera.
I am the living bread, who descended from heaven.51 Yo soy el pan vivo, bajado del cielo. Si uno come de este pan, vivirá para siempre; y el pan que yo le voy a dar, es mi carne por la vida del mundo».
If anyone eats from this bread, he shall live in eternity. And the bread that I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world.”52 Discutían entre sí los judíos y decían: «¿Cómo puede éste darnos a comer su carne?»
Therefore, the Jews debated among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”53 Jesús les dijo: «En verdad, en verdad os digo: si no coméis la carne del Hijo del hombre, y no bebéis su sangre, no tenéis vida en vosotros.
And so, Jesus said to them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you will not have life in you.54 El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre, tiene vida eterna, y yo le resucitaré el último día.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.55 Porque mi carne es verdadera comida y mi sangre verdadera bebida.
For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.56 El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre, permanece en mí, y yo en él.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.57 Lo mismo que el Padre, que vive, me ha enviado y yo vivo por el Padre, también el que me coma vivirá por mí.
Just as the living Father has sent me and I live because of the Father, so also whoever eats me, the same shall live because of me.58 Este es el pan bajado del cielo; no como el que comieron vuestros padres, y murieron; el que coma este pan vivirá para siempre».
This is the bread that descends from heaven. It is not like the manna that your fathers ate, for they died. Whoever eats this bread shall live forever.”59 Esto lo dijo enseñando en la sinagoga, en Cafarnaúm.
He said these things when he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum.60 Muchos de sus discípulos, al oírle, dijeron: «Es duro este lenguaje. ¿Quién puede escucharlo?»
Therefore, many of his disciples, upon hearing this, said: “This saying is difficult,” and, “Who is able to listen to it?”61 Pero sabiendo Jesús en su interior que sus discípulos murmuraban por esto, les dijo: «¿Esto os escandaliza?
But Jesus, knowing within himself that his disciples were murmuring about this, said to them: “Does this offend you?62 ¿Y cuando veáis al Hijo del hombre subir adonde estaba antes?...
Then what if you were to see the Son of man ascending to where he was before?63 «El espíritu es el que da vida; la carne no sirve para nada. Las palabras que os he dicho son espíritu y son vida.
It is the Spirit who gives life. The flesh does not offer anything of benefit. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.64 «Pero hay entre vosotros algunos que no creen». Porque Jesús sabía desde el principio quiénes eran los que no creían y quién era el que lo iba a entregar.
But there are some among you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who were unbelieving and which one would betray him.65 Y decía: «Por esto os he dicho que nadie puede venir a mí si no se lo concede el Padre».
And so he said, “For this reason, I said to you that no one is able to come to me, unless it has been given to him by my Father.”66 Desde entonces muchos de sus discípulos se volvieron atrás y ya no andaban con él.
After this, many of his disciples went back, and they no longer walked with him.67 Jesús dijo entonces a los Doce: «¿También vosotros queréis marcharos?»
Therefore, Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?”68 Le respondió Simón Pedro: «Señor, ¿donde quién vamos a ir? Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna,
Then Simon Peter answered him: “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.69 y nosotros creemos y sabemos que tú eres el Santo de Dios».
And we have believed, and we recognize that you are the Christ, the Son of God.”70 Jesús les respondió: «¿No os he elegido yo a vosotros, los Doce? Y uno de vosotros es un diablo».
Jesus answered them: “Have I not chosen you twelve? And yet one among you is a devil.”71 Hablaba de Judas, hijo de Simón Iscariote, porque éste le iba a entregar, uno de los Doce.
Now he was speaking about Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. For this one, even though he was one of the twelve, was about to betray him.
