And the entire multitude of them, rising up, led him to Pilate.1 Levantando-se toda a multidão, levaram-no a Pilatos.
Then they began to accuse him, saying, “We found this one subverting our nation, and prohibiting giving tribute to Caesar, and saying that he is Christ the king.”2 Começaram a acusá-lo, dizendo: "Encontrámos este homem sublevando a nossa nação, proibindo dar tributo a César, e dizendo que é o Cristo Rei."
And Pilate questioned him, saying: “You are the king of the Jews?” But in response, he said: “You are saying it.”3 Pilatos interrogou-o: "Tu és o rei dos Judeus?" Ele, respondendo, disse: "Tu o dizes."
Then Pilate said to the leaders of the priests and to the crowds, “I find no case against this man.”4 Então Pilatos disse aos príncipes dos sacerdotes e ao povo: "Não encontro neste homem crime algum."
But they continued more intensely, saying: “He has stirred up the people, teaching throughout all of Judea, beginning from Galilee, even to this place.”5 Porém eles insistiam, cada vez mais, dizendo: "Ele subleva o povo, ensinando por toda a Judeia, desde a Galileia, oude começou, até aqui."
But Pilate, upon hearing Galilee, asked if the man were of Galilee.6 Pilatos, ouvindo falar da Galileia, perguntou se aquele homem era galileu.
And when he realized that he was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him away to Herod, who was himself also at Jerusalem in those days.7 Quando soube que era da jurisdição de Herodes, remeteu-o a Herodes, que, naqueles dias, se encontrava também em Jerusalém.
Then Herod, upon seeing Jesus, was very glad. For he had been wanting to see him for a long time, because he had heard so many things about him, and he was hoping to see some kind of sign wrought by him.8 Herodes, tendo visto Jesus, teve grande alegria, porque havia muito tempo tinha desejo de o ver, por ter ouvido dele muitas coisas, e esperava ver-lhe fazer algum milagre.
Then he questioned him with many words. But he gave him no response at all.9 Fez-lhe muitas perguntas. Mas ele nada lhe respondeu.
And the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, stood firm in persistently accusing him.10 Estavam presentes os príncipes dos sacerdotes e os escribas, acusando-o com grande insistência.
Then Herod, with his soldiers, scorned him. And he ridiculed him, clothing him in a white garment. And he sent him back to Pilate.11 Herodes com os seus guardas desprezou-o, fez escárnio dele, mandando-o vestir com uma vestidura branca, e tornou-o a enviar a Pilatos.
And Herod and Pilate became friends on that day. For previously they were enemies to one another.12 Naquele dia, ficaram amigos Herodes e Pilatos; porque antes eram inimigos um do outro.
And Pilate, calling together the leaders of the priests, and the magistrates, and the people,13 Pilatos, tendo chamado os príncipes dos sacerdotes, os magistrados e o povo,
said to them: “You have brought before me this man, as one who disturbs the people. And behold, having questioned him before you, I find no case against this man, in those things about which you accuse him.14 disse-lhes: "Vós apresentaste-me este homem como amotinador do povo; ora, interrogando-o eu diante de vós, não encontrei nele culpa alguma daquelas de que o acusais.
And neither did Herod. For I sent you all to him, and behold, nothing deserving of death was recorded about him.15 Nem Herodes tão-pouco, porque no-lo remeteu. Nada lhe foi encontrado que mereça morte.
Therefore, I will chastise him and release him.”16 Por isso soltá-lo-ei depois de castigado."
Now he was required to release one person for them on the feast day.17 (Ora Pilatos era obrigado a soltar-lhes, pela festa (da Páscoa), um preso.)
But the entire crowd exclaimed together, saying: “Take this one, and release to us Barabbas!”18 Mas todo o povo exclamou a uma voz, dizendo : "Faz morrer este, e solta-nos Barrabás;
Now he had been cast into prison because of a certain sedition that occurred in the city and for murder.19 o qual tinha sido preso por causa de uma sedição levantada na cidade, e por homicidio.
Then Pilate spoke to them again, wanting to release Jesus.20 Pilatos, que desejava livrar Jesus, falou-lhes de novo.
But they shouted in response, saying: “Crucify him! Crucify him!”21 Eles, porém, tornaram a gritar: "Crucifica-o, crucifica-o!"
Then he said to them a third time: “Why? What evil has he done? I find no case against him for death. Therefore, I will chastise him and release him.”22 Ele disse-lhes terceira vez: "Mas, que mal fez ele? Não encontro nele causa alguma de morte; castigá-lo-ei, pois, e o soltarei."
But they persisted, with loud voices, in demanding that he be crucified. And their voices increased in intensity.23 Eles, porém, insistiam em altos gritos que fosse crucificado ; e os seus clamores iam crescendo.
And so Pilate issued a judgment granting their petition.24 Pilatos, pois, decretou que se executasse o que eles pediam.
Then he released for them the one who had been cast into prison for murder and sedition, whom they were requesting. Yet truly, Jesus he handed over to their will.25 Soltou-lhes aquele que tinha sido preso por causa de sedição e de homicídio, como eles reclamavam; e abandonou Jesus ao arbítrio deles.
And as they were leading him away, they apprehended a certain one, Simon of Cyrene, as he was returning from the countryside. And they imposed the cross on him to carry after Jesus.26 Quando o iam conduzindo, agarraram um certo Simão Cireneu, que voltava do campo; e puseram a cruz sobre ele, para que a levasse após de Jesus.
Then a great crowd of people followed him, with women who were mourning and lamenting him.27 Seguia-o uma grande multidão de povo e de mulheres, que batiam no peito, e o lamentavam.
But Jesus, turning to them, said: “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep over me. Instead, weep over yourselves and over your children.28 Porém Jesus, voltando-se para elas, disse : "Filhas de Jerusalém, não choreis sobre mim, mas chorai sobre vós mesmas e sobre vossos filhos.
For behold, the days will arrive in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that have not borne, and the breasts that have not nursed.’29 Porque eis que virá tempo em que se dirá: Ditosas as estéreis, os seios que não geraram, e os peitos que não amamentaram.
Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall over us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’30 Então começarão os homens a dizer aos montes : Caí sobre nós; e aos outeiros : Cobri-nos (Os. 10,8). 31 Porque, se isto se faz no lenho verde, que se fará no seco?"
For if they do these things with green wood, what will be done with the dry?”31 Eram também levados com Jesus outros dois, que eram malfeitores, para serem mortos.
Now they also led out two other criminals with him, in order to execute them.32 Jesus morre sobre a Cruz.
And when they arrived at the place that is called Calvary, they crucified him there, with the robbers, one to the right and the other to the left.33 Quando chegaram ao lugar que se chama Calvário, ali o crucificaram a ele e aos ladrões, um à direita e outro à esquerda.
Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them. For they know not what they do.” And truly, dividing his garments, they cast lots.34 Jesus dizia: "Pai, perdoa-lhes, porque não sabem o que fazem ." Dividindo os seus vestidos, sortearam-nos (S. 21,19).
And people were standing near, watching. And the leaders among them derided him, saying: “He saved others. Let him save himself, if this one is the Christ, the elect of God.”35 O povo estava observando. Os príncipes dos sacerdotes ( com o povo ) o escarneciam, dizendo: "Salvou os outros, salve-se a si mesmo, se é o Cristo, o escolhido de Deus."
And the soldiers also ridiculed him, approaching him and offering him vinegar,36 Insultavam-no também os soldados, os quais, aproximando-se dele e oferecendo-lhe vinagre,
and saying, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”37 diziam : "Se és o rei dos Judeus, salva-te a ti mesmo."
Now there was also an inscription written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.38 Estava também por cima da sua cabeça uma inscrição : Este é o rei dos Judeus.
And one of those robbers who were hanging blasphemed him, saying, “If you are the Christ, save yourself and us.”39 Um daqueles ladrões, que estavam pendurados, blasfemava contra ele, dizendo: "Se és o Cristo, salva-te a ti mesmo e a nós."
But the other responded by rebuking him, saying: “Do you have no fear of God, since you are under the same condemnation?40 O outro, porém, tomando a palavra, repreendia-o, dizendo: "Nem tu temes a Deus, estando no mesmo suplício?"
And indeed, it is just for us. For we are receiving what our deeds deserve. But truly, this one has done nothing wrong.”41 Nós estamos na verdade justamente, porque recebemos o castigo que merecem as nossas acções, mas este não fez nenhum mal.
And he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”42 E dizia a Jesus: "Senhor, lembra-te de mim, quando entrares no teu reino."
And Jesus said to him, “Amen I say to you, this day you shall be with me in Paradise.”43 Jesus disse-lhe: "Em verdade te digo: Hoje estarás comigo no paraíso."
Now it was nearly the sixth hour, and a darkness occurred over the entire earth, until the ninth hour.44 Era então quase a hora, sexta, e toda a terra ficou coberta de trevas até à hora nona;
And the sun was obscured. And the veil of the temple was torn down the middle.45 escureceu-se o sol, e rasgou-se pelo meio o véu do templo.
And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said: “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” And upon saying this, he expired.46 Jesus, exclamando em alta voz, disse: "Pai, nas tuas mãos encomendo o meu espírito (S. 30,6)." Dizendo isto, expirou.
Now, the centurion, seeing what had happened, glorified God, saying, “Truly, this man was the Just One.”47 O centurião, vendo o que tinha acontecido, glorificou a Deus, dizendo : "Na verdade este homem era justo."
And the entire crowd of those who came together to see this spectacle also saw what had happened, and they returned, striking their breasts.48 E toda a multidão que assistia a este espectáculo, e via o que sucedia, retirava-se, batendo no peito.
Now all those who knew him, and the women who had followed him from Galilee, were standing at a distance, watching these things.49 Todos os conhecidos de Jesus, e as mulheres que o tinham seguido desde a Galileia, estavam de longe observando estas coisas.
And behold, there was a man named Joseph, who was a councilman, a good and just man,50 Então um homem, chamado José, que era membro do Sinédrio, varão bom e justo,
(for he had not consented to their decision or their actions). He was from Arimathea, a city of Judea. And he was himself also anticipating the kingdom of God.51 que não tinha concordado com a determinação dos outros, nem com os seus actos, oriundo de Arimateia, cidade da Judeia, que também esperava o reino de Deus,
This man approached Pilate and petitioned for the body of Jesus.52 foi ter com Pilatos, e pediu-lhe o corpo de Jesus.
And taking him down, he wrapped him in a fine linen cloth, and he placed him in a tomb hewn from rock, in which no one had ever been placed.53 Tendo-o descido da cruz, envolveu-o num lençol, e depositou-o num sepulcro aberto na rocha, no qual ainda ninguém tinha sido sepultado,
And it was the day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was drawing near.54 Era o dia da Preparação, e o sábado ia começar.
Now the women who had come with him from Galilee, by following, saw the tomb and the manner in which his body was placed.55 Ora as mulheres, que tinham ido da Galileia com Jesus, indo atrás de José, observaram o sepulcro, e de que modo o corpo de Jesus fora nele depositado.
And upon returning, they prepared aromatic spices and ointments. But on the Sabbath, indeed, they rested, according to the commandment.56 Voltando, prepararam aromas e bálsamos. No sábado, estiveram em repouso, segundo a lei.
