And as they were approaching Jerusalem and Bethania, toward the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,1 E quando furono nei pressi di Gerusalemme, a Bethfage e Bethania presso il monte degli Ulivi, Gesù manda due dei suoi discepoli
and he said to them: “Go into the village that is opposite you, and immediately upon entering there, you will find a colt tied, on which no man has yet sat. Release him and bring him.2 e dice loro: «Andate nel villaggio che vi sta di fronte. Subito, all’entrata, troverete un asinello legato sul quale nessuno ancora si è seduto; scioglietelo e conducetemelo.
And if anyone will say to you: ‘What are you doing?’ Say that the Lord has need of him. And he will immediately send him here.”3 E se qualcuno vi dirà: “Che cosa fate?” rispondete: “Il Signore ne ha bisogno e ve lo rimanderà senza indugio”».
And going out, they found the colt tied before the outer gate, at the meeting of two ways. And they untied him.4 Essi andarono e trovarono un asinello legato presso un uscio, fuori, nella strada, e lo sciolsero.
And some of those who were standing there said to them, “What are you doing by releasing the colt?”5 E alcuni di quelli che si trovavano là dissero: «Che cos'è che fate sciogliendo l’asinello?»
And they spoke to them just as Jesus had instructed them. And they permitted them.6 Avendo essi risposto come aveva detto. Gesù, li lasciarono fare.
And they led the colt to Jesus. And they placed their garments on it; and he sat upon it.7 Portarono l’asinello a Gesù, gettarono sulla bestia i loro mantelli e Gesù vi si sedette.
Then many spread their garments along the way; but others cut down leafy branches from trees and scattered them on the way.8 E molti stesero i loro mantelli sulla via, altri vi stesero fronde strappate nei campi.
And those who went ahead, and those who followed, cried out saying: “Hosanna! Blessed is he who has arrived in the name of the Lord.9 E quelli che camminavano avanti come quelli che erano dietro gridavano: «Osanna ! Benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore !
Blessed is the advent of the kingdom of our father David.
And he entered into Jerusalem, into the temple. And having looked around at everything, since it was now the evening hour, he went out to Bethania with the twelve.11 Ed entrò a Gerusalemme, nel tempio; e dopo aver guardato attorno ogni cosa, essendo l’ora già tarda, se ne andò verso Bethania con i dodici.
And the next day, as they were departing from Bethania, he was hungry.12 L’indomani, uscendo essi da Bethania, Gesù ebbe fame.
And when he had seen a fig tree with leaves in the distance, he went to it, in case he might find something on it. And when he had gone to it, he found nothing but leaves. For it was not the season for figs.13 E veduto di lontano un fico che aveva foglie, andò a vedere se vi trovava qualcosa; ma, avvicinatosi, trovò soltanto foglie. Non era, infatti, il tempo dei fichi.
And in response, he said to it, “From now on and forever, may no one eat fruit from you again!” And his disciples heard this.14 Prendendo allora a parlare, disse all’indirizzo del fico: «Nessuno mai più, in eterno, mangerà frutto da te». E i suoi discepoli udirono.
And they went to Jerusalem. And when he had entered into the temple, he began to cast out the sellers and the buyers in the temple. And he overturned the tables of the moneychangers and the chairs of the vendors of doves.15 Arrivano poi a Gerusalemme.
And he would not permit anyone to carry goods through the temple.16 e non permetteva che si portasse un carico attraverso il tempio.
And he taught them, saying: “Is it not written: ‘For my house shall be called the house of prayer for all nations?’ But you have made it into a den of robbers.”17 E insegnava, e diceva loro: «Non sta scritto: La casa mia sarà chiamata casa di preghiera per tutte le genti?
And when the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, had heard this, they sought a means by which they might destroy him. For they feared him, because the entire multitude was in admiration over his doctrine.18 Lo seppero i gran sacerdoti e gli scribi, e cercavano il modo di farlo perire, perché avevano paura di lui: tutta la folla, difatti, era rapita per il suo insegnamento.
And when evening had arrived, he departed from the city.19 Fattasi sera, uscivano fuori dalla città.
And when they passed by in the morning, they saw that the fig tree had dried up from the roots.20 Passando la mattina accanto al fico, lo videro secco dalle radici.
And Peter, remembering, said to him, “Master, behold, the fig tree that you cursed has withered.”21 Pietro si ricordò e disse: «Rabbi, vedi! il fico che hai maledetto s’è seccato!»
And in response, Jesus said to them: “Have the faith of God.22 E Gesù prese a dire loro: «Abbiate fede in Dio.
Amen I say to you, that whoever will say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and who will not have hesitated in his heart, but will have believed: then whatever he has said be done, it shall be done for him.23 In verità vi dico: Chiunque dirà a questa montagna: “Levati e gettati nel mare!” e non esiterà in cuor suo ma crederà che accadrà ciò che dice, l’otterrà.
For this reason, I say to you, all things whatsoever that you ask for when praying: believe that you will receive them, and they will happen for you.24 Perciò vi dico: Tutto ciò che chiederete nelle vostre preghiere, credete di averlo già ottenuto, e l’otterrete.
And when you stand to pray, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father, who is in heaven, may also forgive you your sins.25 E quando state pregando, se avete qualcosa contro qualcuno perdonate, affinché anche il Padre vostro che è nei cieli vi perdoni i vostri falli».
But if you will not forgive, neither will your Father, who is in heaven, forgive you your sins.”26 .
And they went again to Jerusalem. And when he was walking in the temple, the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, and the elders approached him.27 E vengono di nuovo a Gerusalemme.
And they said to him: “By what authority do you do these things? And who has given you this authority, so that you would do these things?”28 e gli dicevano: «Con quale autorità fai questo?
But in response, Jesus said to them: “I also will ask you one word, and if you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I do these things.29 Gesù disse loro: «Vi farò anch’io una sola domanda: rispondetemi, ed io vi dirò con quale autorità faccio questo.
The baptism of John: was it from heaven or from men? Rispondetemi!»
But they discussed it among themselves, saying: “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’31 Ed essi facevano tra sé questo ragionamento: «Se diciamo: “Dal cielo” dirà: “Perché, dunque, non gli avete creduto?”.
If we say, ‘From men,’ we fear the people. For they all hold that John was a true prophet.”32 Ma diremo: “Dagli uomini”?»
And answering, they said to Jesus, “We do not know.” And in response, Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”33 Risposero quindi: «Non sappiamo!»
