Nehemiah 4

1 Now it happened that, when Sanballat had heard that we were building the wall, he was very angry. And having been moved exceedingly, he ridiculed the Jews.	1 Mais Sanaballat, ayant appris que nous rebâtissions les murailles, entra dans une grande colère; et dans sa violente émotion il se moqua des Juifs,
2 And he said, before his brothers and a crowd of the Samaritans: “What are the foolish Jews doing? Can it be that the Gentiles will allow them? Will they sacrifice and finish in one day? Do they have the ability to make stones out of piles of dust that have been burned up?”	2 et dit devant ses frères et devant un grand nombre de Samaritains : Que font ces Juifs impuissants? Les peuples les laisseront-ils faire? Sacrifieront-ils, et achèveront-ils leur ouvrage en un jour? Pourront-ils bâtir avec des pierres que le feu a réduites en monceaux de poussière?
3 Then too, Tobiah, an Ammonite, his assistant, said: “Let them build. When the fox climbs, he will leap over their stone wall.”	3 Tobie l'Ammonite, qui était à ses côtés, disait aussi : Laissez-les bâtir; s'il vient un renard, il passera par-dessus leur mur de pierre.
4 Listen, O our God, for we have become an object of contempt. Turn their reproach upon their own head, and grant that they may be despised in a land of captivity.	4 Ecoutez, notre Dieu, comme nous sommes méprisés. Faites retomber leurs insultes sur leurs têtes, rendez-les un objet de mépris sur une terre où ils seront captifs.
5 May you not conceal their iniquity, and may their sin not be wiped away, before your face, for they have ridiculed those who are building.	5 Ne couvrez point leur iniquité, et que leur péché ne s'efface pas de devant Vos yeux, car ils se sont raillés de ceux qui bâtissaient.
6 And so we built the wall, and we joined it together, even to the unfinished portion. And the heart of the people was stirred up for the work.	6 Nous rebâtimes donc la muraille, et nous la réparâmes jusqu'à la moitié; et le coeur du peuple fut excité au travail.
7 Now it happened that, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabs, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites had heard that the walls of Jerusalem had been closed, and that the breaches had begun to be repaired, they were exceedingly angry.	7 Mais Sanaballat, Tobie, les Arabes, les Ammonites et ceux d'Azot, ayant appris que la plaie des murs de Jérusalem se refermait, et qu'on commençait à en réparer les brèches, entrèrent dans une grande colère,
8 And they all gathered together, so that they might go forth and fight against Jerusalem, and so that they might prepare ambushes.	8 et ils s'assemblèrent tous ensemble pour venir attaquer Jérusalem et nous dresser des embûches.
9 And we prayed to our God, and we stationed guards upon the wall, day and night, against them.	9 Et nous priâmes notre Dieu, et nous mîmes des gardes contre eux jour et nuit sur la muraille.
10 Then Judah said: “The strength of those who carry has diminished, and the amount of material is very great, and so we will not be able to build the wall.”	10 Cependant Juda disait : Ceux qui portent les fardeaux sont fatigués; il y a beaucoup de terre à ôter, et nous ne pourrons bâtir la muraille.
11 And our enemies said: “Let them neither know, nor realize, until we arrive in their midst, and kill them, and cause the work to cease.”	11 Et nos ennemis disaient : Qu'ils ne sachent point notre dessein, afin que nous venions tout à coup au milieu d'eux pour les tailler en pièces et faire cesser l'ouvrage.
12 Now it happened that, on ten occasions, some Jews arrived who were living near them, from all the places from which they came to us, and they told us this.	12 Mais les Juifs qui habitaient près d'eux vinrent et nous avertirent par dix fois, de tous les lieux d'où ils venaient nous trouver.
13 So I stationed the people in order, in places behind the wall, all around it, with their swords, and lances, and bows.	13 Je mis alors le peuple en haie derrière le mur, tout le long des remparts, avec leurs épées, leurs lances et leurs arcs.
14 And I gazed around, and I rose up. And I said to the nobles, and to the magistrates, and to the rest of the common people: “Do not be afraid before their face. Remember the great and terrible Lord, and fight on behalf of your brothers, your sons and your daughters, and your wives and your households.”	14 Je considérai, et m'étant levé, je dis aux grands, aux magistrats et au reste du peuple : Ne les craignez pas; souvenez-vous du Seigneur grand et terrible, et combattez pour vos frères, pour vos fils et vos filles, pour vos femmes et pour vos maisons.
15 Then it happened that, when our enemies had heard that it had been reported to us, God defeated their counsel. And we all returned to the walls, each one to his own work.	15 Mais lorsque nos ennemis surent que nous avions été avertis, Dieu dissipa leur dessein; et nous revînmes tous aux mourailles, et chacun reprit son ouvrage.
16 And it happened that, from that day, half of their young men were doing the work, and half were prepared for war with lances, and shields, and bows, and armor. And the leaders were behind them in all the house of Judah.	16 Depuis ce jour, la moitié des jeunes gens travaillait, et l'autre moitié se tenait prête à combattre, munie de lances, de boucliers, d'arcs et de cuirasses; et les chefs étaient derrière eux dans toute la maison de Juda.
17 As for those building the wall, and carrying the burdens, and setting things in place: one of his hands was doing the work, and the other was holding a sword.	17 Ceux qui bâtissaient les murs et ceux qui portaient ou chargeaient les fardeaux faisaient leur ouvrage d'une main et tenaient leur épée de l'autre.
18 For each one of the builders was girded with a sword at the waist. And they were building, and they were sounding a trumpet beside me.	18 Car tous ceux qui bâtissaient avaient l'épée au côté. Ils bâtissaient et ils sonnaient de la trompette auprès de moi.
19 And I said to the nobles, and to the magistrates, and to the rest of the common people: “The work is great and wide, and we are separated on the wall far from one another.	19 Alors je dis aux grands, aux magistrats et au reste du peuple : Cet ouvrage est grand et étendu, et nous sommes dispersés le long des murs, loin les uns des autres.
20 At whatever place you hear the sound of the trumpet, rush to that place for us. Our God will fight on our behalf.	20 Partout où vous entendrez sonner la trompette, accourez-y aussitôt auprès de nous; notre Dieu combattra pour nous.
21 And so let us accomplish the work. And let one half part of us hold spears, from the ascent of dawn until the stars come out.”	21 Mais continuons à faire notre ouvrage, et que la moitié d'entre nous ait la lance à la main, depuis le point du jour jusqu'à ce que les étoiles paraissent.
22 Also at that time, I said to the people: “Let each one with his servant remain in the midst of Jerusalem. And let us take turns, throughout the night and day, in doing the work.”	22 Je dis aussi au peuple en ce même temps : Que chacun demeure avec son serviteur au milieu de Jérusalem, afin que nous puissions travailler jour et nuit chacun à son tour.
23 But I and my brothers, and my servants, and the guards who were behind me, we did not take off our clothes; each one only removed his clothes to wash.	23 Mais moi, mes frères, mes gens et les gardes qui m'accompagnaient, nous ne quittions point nos vêtements, et on ne les ôtait que pour se purifier.
