NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as judges of Israel.1 Factum est autem cum senuis set, Samuel posuit filios suos iu dices Israel.
His eldest son was cal ed Joel and his second one, Abijah; they were judges at Beersheba.2 Fuitque nomen filii eius primogeniti Ioel et nomen secundi Abia; iudicabant in Bersabee.
His sons did not fol ow his example but, seduced by the love of money, took bribes and gave biasedverdicts.3 Et non ambulaverunt filii illius in viis eius, sed declinaverunt post avaritiam acceperuntque munera et perverterunt iudicium.
The elders of Israel all assembled, went back to Samuel at Ramah, and said,4 Congregati ergo universi maiores natu Israel venerunt ad Samuel in Rama
'Look, you are old, and your sons are not fol owing your example. So give us a king to judge us, like theother nations.'5 dixeruntque ei: “ Ecce tu senuisti, et filii tui non ambulant in viis tuis; nunc ergo constitue nobis regem, ut iudicet nos, sicut universae habent nationes ”.
Samuel thought that it was wrong of them to say, 'Let us have a king to judge us,' so he prayed toYahweh.6 Displicuitque sermo in oculis Samuelis, eo quod dixissent: “ Da nobis regem, ut iudicet nos ”. Et oravit Samuel ad Dominum.
But Yahweh said to Samuel, 'Obey the voice of the people in al that they say to you: it is not you theyhave rejected7 Dixit autem Dominus ad Samuel: “ Audi vocem populi in omnibus, quae loquuntur tibi; non enim te abiecerunt, sed me abiecerunt, ne regnem super eos.
but me, not wishing me to reign over them any more. They are now doing to you exactly what they havedone to me since the day I brought them out of Egypt until now, deserting me and serving other gods.8 Iuxta omnia opera sua, quae fecerunt a die, qua eduxi eos de Aegypto, usque ad diem hanc, sicut dereliquerunt me et servierunt diis alienis, sic faciunt etiam tibi.
So, do what they ask; only, you must give them a solemn warning, and must tell them what the kingwho is to reign over them will do.'9 Nunc ergo audi vocem eorum; verumtamen contestare eos et praedic eis ius regis, qui regnaturus est super eos ”.
Everything that Yahweh had said, Samuel then repeated to the people who were asking him for aking.10 Dixit itaque Samuel omnia verba Domini ad populum, qui petierat a se regem,
He said, 'This is what the king who is to reign over you wil do. He wil take your sons and direct themto his chariotry and cavalry, and they wil run in front of his chariot.11 et ait: “ Hoc erit ius regis, qui imperaturus est vobis: Filios vestros tollet et ponet in curribus suis facietque sibi equites, et current ante quadrigas eius;
He wil use them as leaders of a thousand and leaders of fifty; he wil make them plough his fields andgather in his harvest and make his weapons of war and the gear for his chariots.12 et constituet sibi tribunos et centuriones et aratores agrorum suorum et messores segetum et fabros armorum et curruum suorum.
He wil take your daughters as perfumers, cooks and bakers.13 Filias quoque vestras faciet sibi unguentarias et focarias et panificas.
He wil take the best of your fields, your vineyards and your olive groves and give them to his officials.14 Agros quoque vestros et vineas et oliveta optima tollet et dabit servis suis.
He wil tithe your crops and vineyards to provide for his courtiers and his officials.15 Sed et segetes vestras et vinearum reditus addecimabit, ut det eunuchis et famulis suis.
He wil take the best of your servants, men and women, of your oxen and your donkeys, and makethem work for him.16 Servos etiam vestros et ancillas et boves vestros optimos et asinos auferet et ponet in opere suo.
He wil tithe your flocks, and you yourselves wil become his slaves.17 Greges vestros addecimabit, vosque eritis ei servi.
When that day comes, you wil cry aloud because of the king you have chosen for yourselves, but onthat day Yahweh wil not hear you.'18 Et clamabitis in die illa a facie regis vestri, quem elegistis vobis, et non exaudiet vos Dominus in die illa ”.
The people, however, refused to listen to Samuel. They said, 'No! We are determined to have a king,19 Noluit autem populus audire vocem Samuel, sed dixerunt: “ Nequaquam: rex enim erit super nos,
so that we can be like the other nations, with our own king to rule us and lead us and fight our battles.'20 et erimus nos quoque sicut omnes gentes; et iudicabit nos rex noster et egredietur ante nos et pugnabit bella nostra pro nobis ”.
Samuel listened to al that the people had to say and repeated it in Yahweh's ear.21 Et audivit Samuel omnia verba populi et locutus est ea in auribus Domini.
Yahweh then said to Samuel, 'Do as they ask and give them a king.' Samuel then said to theIsraelites, 'Go home, each of you, to his own town.'22 Dixit autem Dominus ad Samuel: “ Audi vocem eorum et constitue super eos regem ”. Et ait Samuel ad viros Israel: “ Vadat unusquisque in civitatem suam ”.
