1 Samuel 8

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as judges of Israel.	1 Cuando Samuel se hizo viejo, puso a sus hijos como jueces en Israel.
2 His eldest son was cal ed Joel and his second one, Abijah; they were judges at Beersheba.	2 Su primogénito se llamaba Joel y el otro, Abías; juzgaban en Israel en Berseba.
3 His sons did not fol ow his example but, seduced by the love of money, took bribes and gave biasedverdicts.	3 Pero sus hijos no siguieron su camino: fueron atraídos por el lucro, aceptaron regalos y torcieron el derecho.
4 The elders of Israel all assembled, went back to Samuel at Ramah, and said,	4 Se reunieron, pues, todos los ancianos de Israel y se fueron donde Samuel a Ramá,
5 'Look, you are old, and your sons are not fol owing your example. So give us a king to judge us, like theother nations.'	5 y le dijeron: «Mira, tú te has hecho viejo y tus hijos no siguen tu camino. Pues bien, ponnos un rey para que nos juzgue, como todas las naciones».
6 Samuel thought that it was wrong of them to say, 'Let us have a king to judge us,' so he prayed toYahweh.	6 Disgustó a Samuel que dijeran: «Danos un rey para que nos juzgue» e invocó a Yahveh. .
7 But Yahweh said to Samuel, 'Obey the voice of the people in al that they say to you: it is not you theyhave rejected	7 Pero Yahveh dijo a Samuel: «Haz caso a todo lo que el pueblo te dice. Porque no te han rechazado a ti, me han rechazado a mí, para que no reine sobre ellos.
8 but me, not wishing me to reign over them any more. They are now doing to you exactly what they havedone to me since the day I brought them out of Egypt until now, deserting me and serving other gods.	8 Todo lo que ellos me han hecho desde el día que los saqué de Egipto hasta hoy, abandonándome y sirviendo a otros dioses, te han hecho también a ti.
9 So, do what they ask; only, you must give them a solemn warning, and must tell them what the kingwho is to reign over them will do.'	9 Escucha, sin embargo, su petición. Pero les advertirás claramente y les enseñarás el fuero del rey que va a reinar sobre ellos».
10 Everything that Yahweh had said, Samuel then repeated to the people who were asking him for aking.	10 Samuel repitió todas estas palabras de Yahveh al pueblo que le pedía un rey,
11 He said, 'This is what the king who is to reign over you wil do. He wil take your sons and direct themto his chariotry and cavalry, and they wil run in front of his chariot.	11 diciendo: «He aquí el fuero del rey que va a reinar sobre vosotros. Tomará vuestros hijos y los destinará a sus carros y a sus caballos y tendrán que correr delante de su carro.
12 He wil use them as leaders of a thousand and leaders of fifty; he wil make them plough his fields andgather in his harvest and make his weapons of war and the gear for his chariots.	12 Los empleará como jefes de mil y jefes de cincuenta; les hará labrar sus campos, segar su cosecha, fabricar sus armas de guerra y los arreos de sus carros.
13 He wil take your daughters as perfumers, cooks and bakers.	13 Tomara vuestras hijas para perfumistas, cocineras y panaderas.
14 He wil take the best of your fields, your vineyards and your olive groves and give them to his officials.	14 Tomará vuestros campos, vuestras viñas y vuestros mejores olivares y se los dará a sus servidores.
15 He wil tithe your crops and vineyards to provide for his courtiers and his officials.	15 Tomará el diezmo de vuestros cultivos y vuestras viñas para dárselo a sus eunucos y a sus servidores.
16 He wil take the best of your servants, men and women, of your oxen and your donkeys, and makethem work for him.	16 Tomará vuestros criados y criadas, y vuestros mejores bueyes y asnos y les hará trabajar para él.
17 He wil tithe your flocks, and you yourselves wil become his slaves.	17 Sacará el diezmo de vuestros rebaños y vosotros mismos seréis sus esclavos.
18 When that day comes, you wil cry aloud because of the king you have chosen for yourselves, but onthat day Yahweh wil not hear you.'	18 Ese día os lamentaréis a causa del rey que os habéis elegido, pero entonces Yahveh no os responderá».
19 The people, however, refused to listen to Samuel. They said, 'No! We are determined to have a king,	19 El pueblo no quiso eschuchar a Samuel y dijo: «¡No! Tendremos un rey
20 so that we can be like the other nations, with our own king to rule us and lead us and fight our battles.'	20 y nosotros seremos también como los demás pueblos: nuestro rey nos juzgará, irá al frente de nosotros y combatirá nuestros combates».
21 Samuel listened to al that the people had to say and repeated it in Yahweh's ear.	21 Oyó Samuel todas las palabras del pueblo y las repitió a los oídos de Yahveh.
22 Yahweh then said to Samuel, 'Do as they ask and give them a king.' Samuel then said to theIsraelites, 'Go home, each of you, to his own town.'	22 Pero Yahveh dijo a Samuel: «Hazles caso y ponles un rey». Samuel dijo entonces a todos los hombres de Israel: «Volved cada uno a vuestra ciudad».
