1 The Philistines mustered their troops for war; they assembled at Socoh in Judah and pitched campbetween Socoh and Azekah, in Ephes-Dammim.	1 - Avendo i Filistei messi insieme i loro eserciti per dare battaglia, si riunirono in Soco di Giuda e si accamparono tra Soco e Azeca ai confini di Dommim.
2 Saul and the Israelites also mustered, pitching camp in the Val ey of the Terebinth, and drew up theirbattle-line opposite the Philistines.	2 Saul coi figli d'Israele, radunatisi anch'essi, convennero nella Valle del terebinto e vi si schierarono a battaglia contro i Filistei.
3 The Philistines occupied the high ground on one side and the Israelites occupied the high ground onthe other side, with the valley between them.	3 I Filistei stavano da una parte su una montagna, mentre sulla montagna opposta stava Israele e fra loro c'era la valle.
4 A champion stepped out from the Philistine ranks; his name was Goliath, from Gath; he was six cubitsand one span tal .	4 Uscì allora dal campo de' Filistei un bastardo di nome Golia, di Get, alto sei cubiti e un palmo.
5 On his head was a bronze helmet and he wore a breastplate of scale-armour; the breastplate weighedfive thousand shekels of bronze.	5 Avea in capo un elmo di rame e indossava una corazza a squame del peso di cinquemila sicli di rame.
6 He had bronze greaves on his legs and a bronze scimitar slung across his shoulders.	6 Avea gambali di rame ed uno scudo pure di rame gli copriva le spalle.
7 The shaft of his spear was like a weaver's beam, and the head of his spear weighed six hundredshekels of iron. A shield-bearer walked in front of him.	7 L'asta della sua lancia era pari al subbio di un tessitore, mentre il ferro della sua lancia pesava seicento sicli di ferro. Il suo scudiero poi lo precedeva.
8 Taking position in front of the Israelite lines, he shouted, 'Why have you come out to range yourselvesfor battle? Am I not a Philistine and are you not Saul's lackeys? Choose a man and let him come down to me.	8 Egli dunque si fermò, e vòlto alle falangi d'Israele gridava e diceva loro: «Perchè veniste disposti a dar battaglia? Non sono io Filisteo e voi servi di Saul? Ebbene, scegliete uno fra voi che scenda meco a singolar certame.
9 If he can fight it out with me and kil me, we wil be your servants; but if I can beat him and kill him, youbecome our servants and serve us.'	9 Se riuscirà a combattere con me e mi abbatterà, saremo servi vostri; ma se prevarrò io e riuscirò ad ucciderlo, voi sarete nostri schiavi e ci servirete».
10 The Philistine then said, 'I challenge the ranks of Israel today. Give me a man and we will fight it out!'	10 E aggiungeva il Filisteo: «Io lancio oggi questa sfida alle schiere d'Israele; designatemi un uomo che venga meco a singolar certame».
11 When Saul and all Israel heard what the Philistine said, they were dismayed and terrified.	11 All'udire queste parole del Filisteo, Saul e tutti gli Israeliti erano sbigottiti e presi da gran paura.
12 David was the son of an Ephrathite from Bethlehem of Judah whose name was Jesse; Jesse hadeight sons and, by Saul's time, he was old and wel on in years.	12 Era Davide il figlio di quell'uomo di Efrata, cioè di Betleem di Giuda, di cui si è parlato sopra, chiamato Isai, che aveva otto figliuoli e che ai tempi di Saul era vecchio e tra i più venerandi per età.
13 Jesse's eldest three sons fol owed Saul to the war. The names of the three sons who went to the warwere: the eldest Eliab, the second Abinadab and the third Shammah.	13 I suoi tre figli maggiori avevano seguìto Saul alla guerra e questi tre figliuoli che erano andati in guerra si chiamavano Eliab il primogenito, Abinadab il secondo e Samma il terzo.
14 David was the youngest; the eldest three followed Saul.	14 Davide poi era il più giovane di tutti. Messisi dunque i tre maggiori al seguito di Saul,
15 David alternated between serving Saul and looking after his father's sheep at Bethlehem.	15 Davide si allontanò da Saul per pascere il gregge del padre suo in Betleem.
16 Morning and evening, the Philistine advanced, presenting himself thus for forty days.	16 Intanto il Filisteo, mattina e sera per quaranta giorni continui si faceva innanzi e si poneva ritto [dinanzi a Israele].
17 Jesse said to his son David, 'Take your brothers this ephah of roasted grain and these ten loaves,and hurry to the camp, to your brothers.	17 Ora Isai disse a suo figlio Davide: «Prendi su pe' tuoi fratelli un'efa di grano tostato e questi dieci pani e corri dai tuoi fratelli al campo.
18 And take these ten cheeses to their commanding officer; find out how your brothers are and bringsome token back from them;	18 Questi dieci formaggi poi li porterai al tribuno e vedrai se i tuoi fratelli stiano bene: informati con chi siano stati arruolati».
19 they are with Saul and al the men of Israel in the Val ey of the Terebinth, fighting the Philistines.'	19 Saul poi e tutti i figli d'Israele stavano combattendo nella Valle del terebinto contro i Filistei.
20 David got up early in the morning and, leaving the sheep with someone to guard them, took up hisload and went off as Jesse had ordered; he reached the encampment just as the troops were leaving to take upbattle stations and shouting the war cry.	20 Pertanto Davide levatosi di buon mattino e affidato il gregge al custode, prese il suo carico e se ne andò come aveva ordinato Isai. E arrivò al luogo di Magala quando l'esercito schierato usciva e lanciava il suo grido di guerra.
21 Israel and the Philistines drew up their lines facing one another.	21 Israele aveva disposto in ordine le proprie schiere, ma d'altra parte anche i Filistei se ne stavano preparati.
22 David left his bundle in charge of the baggage guard and, running to the battle-line, went and askedhis brothers how they were.	22 Abbandonate quindi le cose, che aveva portato, in mano del custode dei bagagli, Davide corse tosto al luogo della pugna e si fece a chiedere come se la passassero i fratelli.
23 While he was talking to them, the champion (Goliath, the Philistine from Gath) came up from thePhilistine ranks and made his usual speech, which David heard.	23 Mentre ancora stava loro parlando, ecco quel bastardo, di nome Golia, Filisteo di Get, avanzarsi dal campo de' Filistei e proferire le solite parole che furono intese anche da Davide.
24 As soon as the Israelites saw this man, they all ran away from him and were terrified.	24 Al vedere quell'uomo tutti gli Israeliti, presi da grave spavento, si diedero a fuggire;
25 The Israelites said, 'You saw that man who just came up? He comes to challenge Israel. The king willavish riches on the man who kills him, he wil give him his daughter in marriage and exempt his father's familyfrom al taxes in Israel.'	25 disse allora un Israelita: «Vedete quell'uomo, che si avanza? Si avanza per coprire d'obbrobrio Israele. Ebbene, il re colmerà di grandi ricchezze chi lo abbatterà, gli darà la sua figlia e ne esenterà da qualsiasi tributo in Israele la casa paterna».
26 David asked the men who were standing near him, 'What would be the reward for kil ing thisPhilistine and saving Israel from disgrace? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine, to chal enge the armies of theliving God?'	26 «Che cosa sarà dato», chiese Davide a quelli che stavan con lui «a chi abbatterà questo Filisteo e toglierà l'obbrobrio d'Israele? E chi è mai questo Filisteo incirconciso che osa insultare le schiere del Dio vivente?».
27 The people told him what they had been saying, 'That would be the reward for killing him,' they said.	27 E il popolo gli ripeteva le stesse parole, dicendo: «Queste cose saranno date all'uomo che l'avrà ucciso».
28 His eldest brother Eliab heard David talking to the men and grew angry with him. 'Why have youcome down here?' he said. 'Whom have you left in charge of those few sheep in the desert? I know howimpudent and artful you are; you have come to watch the battle!'	28 Eliab suo fratello maggiore, avendo udito Davide parlare cogli altri, s'adirò fortemente contro di lui e gli disse: «Perchè sei tu venuto qua e perchè hai lasciate quelle poche pecore nel deserto? Conosco il tuo orgoglio e la malvagità del tuo animo. Tu sei venuto per assistere alla battaglia».
29 David retorted, 'What have I done? May I not even speak?'	29 Soggiunse Davide: «E che [male] ho fatto? Non si può nemmeno dire una parola?».
30 And he turned away from him to someone else and asked the same question, to which the peoplereplied as before.	30 Poi scostatosi un po' da lui, riprese con altri lo stesso discorso, e gli fu data ancora la risposta di prima.
31 David's words were noted, however, and reported to Saul, who sent for him.	31 Tali parole proferite da Davide furono udite e riferite a Saul,
32 David said to Saul, 'Let no one be discouraged on his account; your servant wil go and fight thisPhilistine.'	32 al quale, dopo essere stato condotto alla sua presenza, così parlò: «Nessuno deve smarrirsi d'animo a cagione di costui; io, tuo servo, andrò e combatterò contro codesto Filisteo».
33 Saul said to David, 'You cannot go and fight the Philistine; you are only a boy and he has been awarrior since his youth.'	33 Disse Saul a Davide: «Tu non sei in grado di resistere a quel Filisteo e di combattere contro di lui, poichè tu sei ancora giovanetto, ed egli è un guerriero fin dalla sua giovinezza».
34 David said to Saul, 'Your servant used to look after the sheep for his father and whenever a lion or abear came and took a sheep from the flock,	34 Soggiunse Davide: «Il tuo servo pasceva il gregge del padre suo e se veniva un leone o un orso a rapirgli un ariete dal gregge,
35 I used to fol ow it up, lay into it and snatch the sheep out of its jaws. If it turned on me, I would seize itby the beard and batter it to death.	35 io lo inseguivo, lo percotevo e glielo strappavo di bocca. Allora essi mi si voltavano contro, e io li afferrava pel mento, li soffocavo e li uccidevo;
36 Your servant has kil ed both lion and bear, and this uncircumcised Philistine will end up like one ofthem for having chal enged the armies of the living God.'	36 infatti e un leone e un orso furono appunto uccisi dal tuo servo. Questo Filisteo incirconciso sarà dunque come uno di essi. Ed ora andrò e leverò l'obbrobrio d'Israele. E chi è mai codesto Filisteo incirconciso da farsi ardito d'insolentire contro l'esercito del Dio vivente?».
37 'Yahweh,' David went on, 'who delivered me from the claws of lion and bear, wil deliver me from theclutches of this Philistine.' Then Saul said to David, 'Go, and Yahweh be with you!'	37 Poi soggiunse: «Il Signore che mi liberò dagli artigli del leone e dell'orso, mi libererà anche dalle mani di questo Filisteo». Disse quindi Saul a Davide: «Va', e il Signore sia con te».
38 Saul dressed David in his own armour; he put a bronze helmet on his head, dressed him in abreastplate	38 Saul allora vestì delle sue vesti Davide, gli mise in capo un elmo di rame e lo munì di una corazza.
39 and buckled his own sword over David's armour. David tried to walk but, not being used to them, saidto Saul, 'I cannot walk in these; I am not used to them.' So they took them off again.	39 Poi Davide cinse sulle vesti la spada di Saul e cominciò a provare se potesse camminare così armato; ma non essendovi abituato, disse a Saul: «Così non posso camminare: non ci sono abituato». Perciò le depose;
40 He took his stick in his hand, selected five smooth stones from the river bed and put them in hisshepherd's bag, in his pouch; then, sling in hand, he walked towards the Philistine.	40 e ripreso il bastone che teneva sempre in mano si scelse nel torrente cinque pietre ben pulite, se le mise nella bisaccia da pastore che aveva seco; poi presa in mano la fionda, s'avanzò contro il Filisteo.
41 The Philistine, preceded by his shield-bearer, came nearer and nearer to David.	41 Il Filisteo frattanto s'avanzava e s'avvicinava sempre più a Davide.
42 When the Philistine looked David up and down, what he saw fil ed him with scorn, because Davidwas only a lad, with ruddy cheeks and an attractive appearance.	42 Quando poi, preceduto dallo scudiero, alzati gli occhi, vide Davide, lo disprezzò perchè era così giovane, rosso e d'aspetto avvenente.
43 The Philistine said to David, 'Am I a dog for you to come after me with sticks?' And the Philistinecursed David by his gods.	43 Il Filisteo disse a Davide: «Son io forse un cane da venire a me col bastone?». Poi maledì Davide in nome dei suoi dèi,
44 The Philistine said to David, 'Come over here and I wil give your flesh to the birds of the air and thewild beasts!'	44 e soggiunse: «Vieni qua che darò le tue carni agli uccelli dell'aria e alle bestie della terra».
45 David retorted to the Philistine, 'You come to me with sword, spear and scimitar, but I come to you inthe name of Yahweh Sabaoth, God of the armies of Israel, whom you have chal enged.	45 Allora Davide rispose al Filisteo: «Tu vieni a me colla spada, colla lancia e collo scudo, io invece vengo a te nel nome del Signore degli eserciti, del Dio delle schiere d'Israele, alle quali hai insultato,
46 Today, Yahweh will deliver you into my hand; I shall kil you, I shall cut off your head; today, I shallgive your corpse and the corpses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the wild beasts, so that thewhole world may know that there is a God in Israel,	46 di quel Signore che ti darà oggi in mia mano; e allora io ti abbatterò e ti staccherò la testa dal busto e oggi stesso darò i cadaveri dell'esercito filisteo agli uccelli dell'aria e agli animali della terra, affinchè tutto il mondo sappia che v'è un Dio in Israele,
47 and this whole assembly know that Yahweh does not give victory by means of sword and spear -- forYahweh is lord of the battle and he wil deliver you into our power.'	47 e quanti sono qui riuniti conoscano che il Signore non salva colla spada nè colla lancia, mentre sua è la guerra; ed egli darà voi in nostra balìa».
48 No sooner had the Philistine started forward to confront David than David darted out of the lines andran to meet the Philistine.	48 Essendosi pertanto levato il Filisteo ed avanzato per accostarsi a Davide, Davide si affrettò a correre alla battaglia di fronte al Filisteo;
49 Putting his hand in his bag, he took out a stone, slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead; thestone penetrated his forehead and he fel face downwards on the ground.	49 e, messa la mano nella bisaccia ne tolse una pietra e la lanciò con la fionda, facendola girare, e colpì il Filisteo in fronte; la pietra gli si conficcò nella fronte e Golia stramazzò bocconi al suolo.
50 Thus David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; he hit the Philistine and kil ed him,though he had no sword in his hand.	50 Così Davide trionfò del Filisteo con una fionda e una pietra. Colpì il Filisteo e l'uccise: non avendo però alla mano una spada,
51 David ran and stood over the Philistine, seized his sword, pul ed it from the scabbard, despatchedhim and cut off his head. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.	51 corse e fattosi sopra il Filisteo, ne afferrò la spada, la sguainò e lo finì staccandogli il capo. Al veder morto il più forte di loro, i Filistei si diedero alla fuga,
52 The men of Israel and of Judah started forward, shouting their war cry, and pursued the Philistines asfar as the approaches of Gath and the gates of Ekron. The Philistine dead lay al along the road from Shaaraimas far as Gath and Ekron.	52 mentre quei d'Israele e Giuda emettendo grida si levarono e li inseguirono finchè giunsero nella valle e sino alle porte di Accaron e molti furono i Filistei che caddero feriti sulla via di Saraim fino a Get e fino ad Accaron.
53 Turning back from their ferocious pursuit of the Philistines, the Israelites plundered their camp.	53 Al loro ritorno poi dall'inseguimento dei Filistei, i figli di Israele saccheggiarono il loro campo.
54 And David took the Philistine's head and brought it to Jerusalem; his weapons, however, he put in hisown tent.	54 Davide poi preso il capo del Filisteo, lo portò a Gerusalemme e ne collocò le armi nella sua tenda.
55 When Saul saw David going to engage the Philistine he said to Abner, the army commander, 'Abner,whose son is that boy?' 'On your life, O king,' Abner replied, 'I do not know.'	55 Al momento in cui Saul vide Davide muovere contro il Filisteo, aveva chiesto ad Abner, capo dell'esercito: «Abner, da quale famiglia discende questo giovanetto?». E Abner aveva risposto: «come è vero che vivi , o re, io lo ignoro».
56 The king said, 'Find out whose son the lad is.'	56 Il re aveva soggiunto: «Informati di chi sia figlio questo ragazzo».
57 When David came back after kil ing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul withthe Philistine's head in his hand.	57 Ritornato pertanto Davide, dopo aver abbattuto il Filisteo, Abner lo prese e lo introdusse, con in mano il capo del Filisteo, al cospetto di Saul,
58 Saul asked him, 'Whose son are you, young man?' David replied, 'The son of your servant Jesse ofBethlehem.'	58 che gli chiese: «Di qual famiglia sei, o giovinetto?». Gli rispose Davide: «Sono figlio del tuo servo Isai il Betlemita».
