1 Samuel 17

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 The Philistines mustered their troops for war; they assembled at Socoh in Judah and pitched campbetween Socoh and Azekah, in Ephes-Dammim.	1 Los filisteos reunieron sus fuerzas para el combate. Se concentraron en Socó de Judá y acamparon entre Socó y Azecá, en Efes Damím.
2 Saul and the Israelites also mustered, pitching camp in the Val ey of the Terebinth, and drew up theirbattle-line opposite the Philistines.	2 También Saúl y los hombres de Israel se reunieron y acamparon en el valle del Terebinto, y se dispusieron en orden de batalla frente a los filisteos.
3 The Philistines occupied the high ground on one side and the Israelites occupied the high ground onthe other side, with the valley between them.	3 Estos filisteos estaban apostados en un monte, y los israelitas en el del lado opuesto, con el valle de por medio.
4 A champion stepped out from the Philistine ranks; his name was Goliath, from Gath; he was six cubitsand one span tal .	4 Entonces salió del campo filisteo un luchador llamado Goliat, de Gat, que medía casi tres metros de altura.
5 On his head was a bronze helmet and he wore a breastplate of scale-armour; the breastplate weighedfive thousand shekels of bronze.	5 Llevaba en la cabeza un casco de bronce e iba cubierto con una coraza escamada, también de bronce, que pesaba más de medio quintal.
6 He had bronze greaves on his legs and a bronze scimitar slung across his shoulders.	6 Tenía unas canilleras de bronce en las piernas y una jabalina de bronce a la espalda.
7 The shaft of his spear was like a weaver's beam, and the head of his spear weighed six hundredshekels of iron. A shield-bearer walked in front of him.	7 El asta de su lanza era gruesa como el palo de un telar y el hierro de la punta pesaba unos seis kilos. Su escudero iba delante de él.
8 Taking position in front of the Israelite lines, he shouted, 'Why have you come out to range yourselvesfor battle? Am I not a Philistine and are you not Saul's lackeys? Choose a man and let him come down to me.	8 El filisteo se detuvo y gritó a las filas de Israel: «¿Para qué salen a presentar batalla? ¿No soy yo el filisteo y ustedes los esclavos de Saúl? Elijan a un hombre, y que baje a enfrentarme.
9 If he can fight it out with me and kil me, we wil be your servants; but if I can beat him and kill him, youbecome our servants and serve us.'	9 Si él es capaz de combatir conmigo y me derrota, seremos esclavos de ustedes. Pero si yo puedo más que él y lo derroto, ustedes serán nuestros esclavos y nos servirán».
10 The Philistine then said, 'I challenge the ranks of Israel today. Give me a man and we will fight it out!'	10 Y el filisteo añadió: «Hoy lanza un desafío a las filas de Israel. Preséntenme un hombre y nos batiremos en duelo».
11 When Saul and all Israel heard what the Philistine said, they were dismayed and terrified.	11 Saúl y todo Israel, al oír estas palabras del filisteo, quedaron espantados y sintieron un gran temor.
12 David was the son of an Ephrathite from Bethlehem of Judah whose name was Jesse; Jesse hadeight sons and, by Saul's time, he was old and wel on in years.	12 David era hijo de aquel Efrateo de Belén de Judá, llamado Jesé, que tenía ocho hijos. En tiempos de Saúl, Jesé era ya un hombre viejo, de edad avanzada,
13 Jesse's eldest three sons fol owed Saul to the war. The names of the three sons who went to the warwere: the eldest Eliab, the second Abinadab and the third Shammah.	13 y sus tres hijos mayores habían ido a la guerra detrás de Saúl. El mayor de estos tres hijos se llamaba Eliab, el segundo Abinadab y el tercero Sammá;
14 David was the youngest; the eldest three followed Saul.	14 David era el más pequeño. Los tres mayores habían seguido a Saúl,
15 David alternated between serving Saul and looking after his father's sheep at Bethlehem.	15 mientras que David solía ir al campamento de Saúl y luego volvía a Belén, para apacentar el rebaño de su padre.
16 Morning and evening, the Philistine advanced, presenting himself thus for forty days.	16 Mientras tanto, el filisteo se adelantaba por la mañana y por la tarde, y así se presentó durante cuarenta días.
17 Jesse said to his son David, 'Take your brothers this ephah of roasted grain and these ten loaves,and hurry to the camp, to your brothers.	17 Jesé dijo a su hijo David: «Toma esta bolsa de grano tostado y estos diez panes, y corre a llevárselos a tus hermanos al campamento.
18 And take these ten cheeses to their commanding officer; find out how your brothers are and bringsome token back from them;	18 Estos diez quesos se los entregarás al comandante. Fíjate bien cómo están tus hermanos y trae algo de ellos como prenda.
19 they are with Saul and al the men of Israel in the Val ey of the Terebinth, fighting the Philistines.'	19 Saúl está con ellos y con todos los hombres de Israel en el valle del Terebinto, combatiendo contra los filisteos».
20 David got up early in the morning and, leaving the sheep with someone to guard them, took up hisload and went off as Jesse had ordered; he reached the encampment just as the troops were leaving to take upbattle stations and shouting the war cry.	20 David se levantó de madrugada, dejó el rebaño al cuidado de un guardián y partió con su carga, como se lo había mandado Jesé. Cuando llegó al cerco del campamento, el ejército avanzaba en orden de batalla, lanzando el grito de guerra.
21 Israel and the Philistines drew up their lines facing one another.	21 Israelitas y filisteos se alinearon frente a frente.
22 David left his bundle in charge of the baggage guard and, running to the battle-line, went and askedhis brothers how they were.	22 Entonces David dejó las cosas que traía en manos del encargado del equipaje, corrió hacia las filas y fue a saludar a sus hermanos.
23 While he was talking to them, the champion (Goliath, the Philistine from Gath) came up from thePhilistine ranks and made his usual speech, which David heard.	23 Mientras estaba hablando con ellos, subió del frente filisteo el luchador llamado Goliat, el filisteo de Gat. Pronunció las mismas palabras, y David lo escuchó.
24 As soon as the Israelites saw this man, they all ran away from him and were terrified.	24 Todos los israelitas, apenas vieron al hombre, huyeron despavoridos delante de él.
25 The Israelites said, 'You saw that man who just came up? He comes to challenge Israel. The king willavish riches on the man who kills him, he wil give him his daughter in marriage and exempt his father's familyfrom al taxes in Israel.'	25 Un hombre de Israel dijo: «¿Han visto a ese hombre que sube? ¡El viene a desafiar a Israel! Al que lo derrote, el rey lo colmará de riquezas, le dará su hija como esposa y eximirá de impuestos a su casa paterna en Israel».
26 David asked the men who were standing near him, 'What would be the reward for kil ing thisPhilistine and saving Israel from disgrace? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine, to chal enge the armies of theliving God?'	26 David preguntó a los hombres que estaban con él: «¿Qué le harán al hombre que derrote a ese filisteo y ponga a salvo el honor de Israel? Porque ¿quién es ese filisteo incircunciso para desafiar a las huestes del Dios viviente?».
27 The people told him what they had been saying, 'That would be the reward for killing him,' they said.	27 La gente le repitió lo mismo: «Al que lo derrote le harán tal y tal cosa».
28 His eldest brother Eliab heard David talking to the men and grew angry with him. 'Why have youcome down here?' he said. 'Whom have you left in charge of those few sheep in the desert? I know howimpudent and artful you are; you have come to watch the battle!'	28 Pero Eliab, su hermano mayor, al oírlo hablar así con esos hombres, se irritó contra él y exclamó: «¿Para qué has bajado aquí? ¿Y con quién has dejado esas pocas ovejas en el desierto? Ya sé que eres un atrevido y un mal intencionado: ¡tú has bajado para ver la batalla!».
29 David retorted, 'What have I done? May I not even speak?'	29 David replicó: «Pero ¿qué he hecho?».
30 And he turned away from him to someone else and asked the same question, to which the peoplereplied as before.	30 En seguida se apartó de él y, dirigiéndose a otro, le hizo la misma pregunta. Y la gente le respondió lo mismo que antes.
31 David's words were noted, however, and reported to Saul, who sent for him.	31 Los que habían oído las palabras que dijo David se las comunicaron a Saúl, y este lo mandó llamar.
32 David said to Saul, 'Let no one be discouraged on his account; your servant wil go and fight thisPhilistine.'	32 David dijo a Saúl: «No hay que desanimarse a causa de ese; tu servidor irá a luchar contra el filisteo».
33 Saul said to David, 'You cannot go and fight the Philistine; you are only a boy and he has been awarrior since his youth.'	33 Pero Saúl respondió a David: «Tú no puedes batirte con ese filisteo, porque no eres más que un muchacho, y él es un hombre de guerra desde su juventud».
34 David said to Saul, 'Your servant used to look after the sheep for his father and whenever a lion or abear came and took a sheep from the flock,	34 David dijo a Saúl: «Tu servidor apacienta el rebaño de su padre, y siempre que viene un león o un oso y se lleva una oveja del rebaño,
35 I used to fol ow it up, lay into it and snatch the sheep out of its jaws. If it turned on me, I would seize itby the beard and batter it to death.	35 yo lo persigo, lo golpeo y se la arranco de la boca; y si él me ataca, yo lo agarro por la quijada y lo mato a golpes.
36 Your servant has kil ed both lion and bear, and this uncircumcised Philistine will end up like one ofthem for having chal enged the armies of the living God.'	36 Así he matado leones y osos, y ese filisteo incircunciso será como uno de ellos, porque ha desafiado a las huestes del Dios viviente».
37 'Yahweh,' David went on, 'who delivered me from the claws of lion and bear, wil deliver me from theclutches of this Philistine.' Then Saul said to David, 'Go, and Yahweh be with you!'	37 Y David añadió: «El Señor, que me ha librado de las garras del león y del oso, también me librará de la mano de ese filisteo». Entonces Saúl dijo a David: «Ve, y que el Señor esté contigo».
38 Saul dressed David in his own armour; he put a bronze helmet on his head, dressed him in abreastplate	38 Saúl vistió a David con su propia indumentaria, le puso en la cabeza un casco de bronce y lo cubrió con una coraza.
39 and buckled his own sword over David's armour. David tried to walk but, not being used to them, saidto Saul, 'I cannot walk in these; I am not used to them.' So they took them off again.	39 Después, David se ciñó la espada de Saúl por encima de su indumentaria, e hizo un esfuerzo para poder caminar, porque no estaba entrenado. Entonces David dijo a Saúl: «No puedo caminar con todas estas cosas porque no estoy entrenado». Y David se las quitó.
40 He took his stick in his hand, selected five smooth stones from the river bed and put them in hisshepherd's bag, in his pouch; then, sling in hand, he walked towards the Philistine.	40 Luego tomó en la mano su bastón, eligió en el torrente cinco piedras bien lisas, las puso en su bolsa de pastor, en la mochila, y con la honda en la mano avanzó hacia el filisteo.
41 The Philistine, preceded by his shield-bearer, came nearer and nearer to David.	41 El filisteo se fue acercando poco a poco a David, precedido de su escudero.
42 When the Philistine looked David up and down, what he saw fil ed him with scorn, because Davidwas only a lad, with ruddy cheeks and an attractive appearance.	42 Y al fijar sus ojos en David, el filisteo lo despreció, porque vio que era apenas un muchacho, de tez clara y de buena presencia.
43 The Philistine said to David, 'Am I a dog for you to come after me with sticks?' And the Philistinecursed David by his gods.	43 Entonces dijo a David: «¿Soy yo un perro para que vengas a mí armado de palos?». Y maldijo a David invocando a sus dioses.
44 The Philistine said to David, 'Come over here and I wil give your flesh to the birds of the air and thewild beasts!'	44 Luego le dijo: «Ven aquí, y daré tu carne a los pájaros del cielo y a los animales del campo».
45 David retorted to the Philistine, 'You come to me with sword, spear and scimitar, but I come to you inthe name of Yahweh Sabaoth, God of the armies of Israel, whom you have chal enged.	45 David replicó al filisteo: «Tú avanzas contra mí armado de espada, lanza y jabalina, pero yo voy hacia ti en el nombre del Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de las huestes de Israel, a quien tú has desafiado.
46 Today, Yahweh will deliver you into my hand; I shall kil you, I shall cut off your head; today, I shallgive your corpse and the corpses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the wild beasts, so that thewhole world may know that there is a God in Israel,	46 Hoy mismo el Señor te entregará en mis manos; yo te derrotaré, te cortaré la cabeza, y daré tu cadáver y los cadáveres del ejército filisteo a los pájaros del cielo y a los animales del campo. Así toda la tierra sabrá que hay un Dios para Israel.
47 and this whole assembly know that Yahweh does not give victory by means of sword and spear -- forYahweh is lord of the battle and he wil deliver you into our power.'	47 Y toda esta asamblea reconocerá que el Señor da la victoria sin espada ni lanza. Porque esta es una guerra del Señor, y él los entregará en nuestras manos».
48 No sooner had the Philistine started forward to confront David than David darted out of the lines andran to meet the Philistine.	48 Cuando el filisteo se puso en movimiento y se acercó cada vez más para enfrentar a David, este enfiló velozmente en dirección al filisteo.
49 Putting his hand in his bag, he took out a stone, slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead; thestone penetrated his forehead and he fel face downwards on the ground.	49 En seguida se metió la mano en su bolsa, sacó de ella una piedra y la arrojó con la honda, hiriendo al filisteo en la frente. La piedra se le clavó en la frente, y él cayó de bruces contra el suelo.
50 Thus David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; he hit the Philistine and kil ed him,though he had no sword in his hand.	50 Así venció David al filisteo con la honda y una piedra; le asestó un golpe mortal, sin tener una espada en su mano.
51 David ran and stood over the Philistine, seized his sword, pul ed it from the scabbard, despatchedhim and cut off his head. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.	51 David fue corriendo y se paró junto al filisteo; le agarró la espada, se la sacó de la vaina y lo mató, cortándole la cabeza. Al ver que su héroe estaba muerto, los filisteos huyeron.
52 The men of Israel and of Judah started forward, shouting their war cry, and pursued the Philistines asfar as the approaches of Gath and the gates of Ekron. The Philistine dead lay al along the road from Shaaraimas far as Gath and Ekron.	52 Inmediatamente, los hombres de Israel y de Judá lanzaron el grito de guerra y persiguieron a los filisteos hasta la entrada de Gat y hasta las puertas de Ecrón. Muchos filisteos cayeron heridos de muerte por el camino de Dos Puertas, hasta Gat y Ecrón.
53 Turning back from their ferocious pursuit of the Philistines, the Israelites plundered their camp.	53 Después, los israelitas volvieron de su encarnizada persecución contra los filisteos y saquearon su campamento.
54 And David took the Philistine's head and brought it to Jerusalem; his weapons, however, he put in hisown tent.	54 David tomó la cabeza del filisteo y la llevó a Jerusalén, pero dejó las armas en su propia carpa.
55 When Saul saw David going to engage the Philistine he said to Abner, the army commander, 'Abner,whose son is that boy?' 'On your life, O king,' Abner replied, 'I do not know.'	55 Al ver que David salía al encuentro del filisteo, Saúl le había preguntado a Abner, el jefe del ejército: «Abner, ¿de quién es hijo ese muchacho?». «¡Por tu vida, rey, no lo sé!», respondió Abner.
56 The king said, 'Find out whose son the lad is.'	56 Entonces el rey dijo: «Averigua de quién es hijo ese muchacho».
57 When David came back after kil ing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul withthe Philistine's head in his hand.	57 Cuando David volvió de matar al filisteo, Abner lo llevó a la presencia de Saúl con la cabeza del filisteo en la mano.
58 Saul asked him, 'Whose son are you, young man?' David replied, 'The son of your servant Jesse ofBethlehem.'	58 Saúl le preguntó: «¿De quién eres hijo, muchacho?». David respondió: «Soy hijo de tu servidor Jesé, el de Belén».
