1 The Philistines mustered their troops for war; they assembled at Socoh in Judah and pitched campbetween Socoh and Azekah, in Ephes-Dammim.	1 Les Philistins rassemblèrent leurs troupes pour la guerre. Ils se réunirent à Soko de Juda: leur camp se trouvait à Éphès-Damim, entre Soko et Azéka.
2 Saul and the Israelites also mustered, pitching camp in the Val ey of the Terebinth, and drew up theirbattle-line opposite the Philistines.	2 Saül et les Israélites se concentrèrent également, ils établirent leur camp dans la vallée du Térébinthe et se rangèrent en bataille face aux Philistins.
3 The Philistines occupied the high ground on one side and the Israelites occupied the high ground onthe other side, with the valley between them.	3 Les Philistins se tenaient sur un des versants de la montagne et les Israélites sur l’autre, la vallée les séparait.
4 A champion stepped out from the Philistine ranks; his name was Goliath, from Gath; he was six cubitsand one span tal .	4 Un guerrier d’élite, du nom de Goliath, sortit des rangs Philistins; c’était un homme de Gat qui mesurait plus de deux mètres.
5 On his head was a bronze helmet and he wore a breastplate of scale-armour; the breastplate weighedfive thousand shekels of bronze.	5 Il avait un casque de bronze sur la tête et il était revêtu d’une cuirasse d’écailles. Le poids de sa cuirasse de bronze était de 60 kilos.
6 He had bronze greaves on his legs and a bronze scimitar slung across his shoulders.	6 Il portait des jambières de bronze et un javelot de bronze entre les épaules,
7 The shaft of his spear was like a weaver's beam, and the head of his spear weighed six hundredshekels of iron. A shield-bearer walked in front of him.	7 le bois de sa lance était aussi gros que celui dont on fait le cadre d’un métier à tisser et la pointe de fer de sa lance pesait à elle seule sept kilos. Un porte-bouclier marchait devant lui.
8 Taking position in front of the Israelite lines, he shouted, 'Why have you come out to range yourselvesfor battle? Am I not a Philistine and are you not Saul's lackeys? Choose a man and let him come down to me.	8 Il se plaça face aux rangs d’Israël et les interpella: “Pourquoi êtes-vous sortis pour vous ranger en bataille? Je suis le Philistin et vous êtes les esclaves de Saül, n’est-ce pas? Choisissez donc parmi vous un homme, et qu’il vienne lutter contre moi.
9 If he can fight it out with me and kil me, we wil be your servants; but if I can beat him and kill him, youbecome our servants and serve us.'	9 S’il est capable de l’emporter sur moi, s’il m’abat, alors nous serons vos serviteurs; mais si je l’emporte sur lui, si je l’abats, c’est vous qui deviendrez nos esclaves et qui nous servirez.”
10 The Philistine then said, 'I challenge the ranks of Israel today. Give me a man and we will fight it out!'	10 Le Philistin ajouta: “Aujourd’hui j’ai lancé un défi aux troupes d’Israël, donnez-moi donc un homme pour que nous nous mesurions en combat singulier.”
11 When Saul and all Israel heard what the Philistine said, they were dismayed and terrified.	11 Lorsque Saül et Israël entendirent les paroles du Philistin, ils furent terrifiés et complètement démoralisés.
12 David was the son of an Ephrathite from Bethlehem of Judah whose name was Jesse; Jesse hadeight sons and, by Saul's time, he was old and wel on in years.	12 David était le fils de Jessé, un Éfratéen de Bethléem de Juda qui avait huit fils. Au temps de Saül, Jessé était déjà vieux, avancé en âge,
13 Jesse's eldest three sons fol owed Saul to the war. The names of the three sons who went to the warwere: the eldest Eliab, the second Abinadab and the third Shammah.	13 mais ses trois aînés étaient partis à la guerre avec Saül. Ces trois fils qui partirent à la guerre étaient Éliab, l’aîné, Abinadab, le second, et Chamma, le troisième.
14 David was the youngest; the eldest three followed Saul.	14 David était plus jeune, et comme les trois aînés étaient partis avec Saül,
15 David alternated between serving Saul and looking after his father's sheep at Bethlehem.	15 David allait et venait du service de Saül à la garde du troupeau de son père à Bethléem.
16 Morning and evening, the Philistine advanced, presenting himself thus for forty days.	16 Chaque matin et chaque soir le Philistin se présentait: il fit ainsi pendant quarante jours.
17 Jesse said to his son David, 'Take your brothers this ephah of roasted grain and these ten loaves,and hurry to the camp, to your brothers.	17 Jessé dit à David son fils: “Prends donc pour tes frères une mesure de grain grillé et dix pains. Tu iras au camp pour les porter à tes frères.
18 And take these ten cheeses to their commanding officer; find out how your brothers are and bringsome token back from them;	18 Tu donneras ces dix morceaux de fromage au chef de mille, puis tu prendras des nouvelles de tes frères et tu me ramèneras d’eux un gage.”
19 they are with Saul and al the men of Israel in the Val ey of the Terebinth, fighting the Philistines.'	19 Or ils étaient avec Saül et tout Israël dans la vallée du Térébinthe pour combattre les Philistins.
20 David got up early in the morning and, leaving the sheep with someone to guard them, took up hisload and went off as Jesse had ordered; he reached the encampment just as the troops were leaving to take upbattle stations and shouting the war cry.	20 De bon matin David se leva, il confia le troupeau à un gardien, puis il emporta son sac et partit comme Jessé le lui avait ordonné. Lorsqu’il arriva, l’armée quittait le camp pour prendre ses positions et pousser le cri de guerre.
21 Israel and the Philistines drew up their lines facing one another.	21 Les Israélites et les Philistins se rangèrent face à face.
22 David left his bundle in charge of the baggage guard and, running to the battle-line, went and askedhis brothers how they were.	22 David confia son sac à celui qui gardait les bagages et courut vers le front des troupes. Il alla saluer ses frères.
23 While he was talking to them, the champion (Goliath, the Philistine from Gath) came up from thePhilistine ranks and made his usual speech, which David heard.	23 Pendant qu’il parlait avec eux, voici que le colosse philistin sortit des lignes. Il s’appelait Goliath, c’était un Philistin de Gat. Il répétait toujours les mêmes paroles et David l’entendit.
24 As soon as the Israelites saw this man, they all ran away from him and were terrified.	24 Dès qu’on le voyait, les Israélites se mettaient à distance car ils tremblaient de peur.
25 The Israelites said, 'You saw that man who just came up? He comes to challenge Israel. The king willavish riches on the man who kills him, he wil give him his daughter in marriage and exempt his father's familyfrom al taxes in Israel.'	25 Un homme d’Israël dit: “Avez-vous vu cet homme qui monte des lignes philistines pour insulter Israël. Le roi comblera de richesses celui qui l’abattra, il lui donnera sa fille en mariage et exemptera la maison de son père de tout impôt en Israël.”
26 David asked the men who were standing near him, 'What would be the reward for kil ing thisPhilistine and saving Israel from disgrace? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine, to chal enge the armies of theliving God?'	26 David demanda aux hommes qui étaient autour de lui: “Que fera-t-on pour celui qui abattra ce Philistin et vengera l’insulte faite à Israël? Qui est ce Philistin incirconcis, pour insulter les troupes du Dieu vivant!”
27 The people told him what they had been saying, 'That would be the reward for killing him,' they said.	27 Les gens lui répétèrent les paroles qu’ils avaient entendues: “Voilà ce qu’on fera pour l’homme qui l’abattra.”
28 His eldest brother Eliab heard David talking to the men and grew angry with him. 'Why have youcome down here?' he said. 'Whom have you left in charge of those few sheep in the desert? I know howimpudent and artful you are; you have come to watch the battle!'	28 Éliab, son frère aîné, l’entendit qui parlait avec les hommes de guerre et il se mit en colère contre David. Il lui dit: “Pourquoi es-tu venu ici? À qui as-tu confié les quelques brebis que nous avons dans le désert? Je te connais: tu cours après les occasions, et c’est pour voir la bataille que tu es venu ici.”
29 David retorted, 'What have I done? May I not even speak?'	29 David répondit: “Qu’ai-je donc fait? N’a-t-on plus le droit de parler?”
30 And he turned away from him to someone else and asked the same question, to which the peoplereplied as before.	30 Il se tourna vers un autre et lui posa la même question, mais les gens lui firent la même réponse que la première fois.
31 David's words were noted, however, and reported to Saul, who sent for him.	31 On avait entendu les paroles de David et on les avait rapportées à Saül qui le fit venir.
32 David said to Saul, 'Let no one be discouraged on his account; your servant wil go and fight thisPhilistine.'	32 David dit à Saül: “Que personne ne tremble en face de ce Philistin, ton serviteur ira se battre contre lui.”
33 Saul said to David, 'You cannot go and fight the Philistine; you are only a boy and he has been awarrior since his youth.'	33 Mais Saül dit à David: “Tu ne pourras pas combattre ce Philistin, tu n’es qu’un enfant et lui est un homme de guerre depuis sa jeunesse.”
34 David said to Saul, 'Your servant used to look after the sheep for his father and whenever a lion or abear came and took a sheep from the flock,	34 David dit à Saül: “Ton serviteur gardait les troupeaux de son père, et lorsqu’un lion ou un ours venait pour emporter un mouton du troupeau,
35 I used to fol ow it up, lay into it and snatch the sheep out of its jaws. If it turned on me, I would seize itby the beard and batter it to death.	35 je partais à sa poursuite, je le frappais et je lui arrachais de la gueule sa proie. S’il se jetait sur moi, je le saisissais par la barbe, je le frappais et je le mettais en pièces.
36 Your servant has kil ed both lion and bear, and this uncircumcised Philistine will end up like one ofthem for having chal enged the armies of the living God.'	36 “Ton serviteur a mis à mal le lion et l’ours, et ce sera pareil pour ce Philistin qui a insulté les troupes du Dieu vivant!”
37 'Yahweh,' David went on, 'who delivered me from the claws of lion and bear, wil deliver me from theclutches of this Philistine.' Then Saul said to David, 'Go, and Yahweh be with you!'	37 David dit encore: “Yahvé qui m’a délivré de la griffe du lion et de la patte de l’ours, me délivrera de la main de ce Philistin.” Alors Saül dit à David: “Va et que Yahvé soit avec toi.”
38 Saul dressed David in his own armour; he put a bronze helmet on his head, dressed him in abreastplate	38 Saül donna à David ses propres vêtements, il mit sur sa tête un casque de bronze et l’habilla d’une cuirasse.
39 and buckled his own sword over David's armour. David tried to walk but, not being used to them, saidto Saul, 'I cannot walk in these; I am not used to them.' So they took them off again.	39 David attacha son épée par-dessus ses vêtements, il essaya de marcher, mais il n’était pas habitué. Alors David dit à Saül: “Je ne peux marcher avec tout cela, car je ne suis pas habitué.” Et David enleva tout.
40 He took his stick in his hand, selected five smooth stones from the river bed and put them in hisshepherd's bag, in his pouch; then, sling in hand, he walked towards the Philistine.	40 Il prit son bâton et choisit dans le torrent cinq pierres bien plates. Il les mit dans son sac de berger, dans sa sacoche, il prit sa fronde en main et s’avança contre le Philistin.
41 The Philistine, preceded by his shield-bearer, came nearer and nearer to David.	41 Le Philistin allait et venait et s’approchait de David; son porte-bouclier s’avançait devant lui.
42 When the Philistine looked David up and down, what he saw fil ed him with scorn, because Davidwas only a lad, with ruddy cheeks and an attractive appearance.	42 Le Philistin regarda David et il le méprisa, car il n’était encore qu’un garçon (David était roux et d’une belle apparence).
43 The Philistine said to David, 'Am I a dog for you to come after me with sticks?' And the Philistinecursed David by his gods.	43 Le Philistin dit à David: “Suis-je un chien, pour que tu viennes contre moi avec des bâtons?” Alors le Philistin maudit David par tous ses dieux,
44 The Philistine said to David, 'Come over here and I wil give your flesh to the birds of the air and thewild beasts!'	44 puis il dit à David: “Avance vers moi, pour que je te livre en pâture aux oiseaux des cieux et aux bêtes des champs.”
45 David retorted to the Philistine, 'You come to me with sword, spear and scimitar, but I come to you inthe name of Yahweh Sabaoth, God of the armies of Israel, whom you have chal enged.	45 David répondit au Philistin: “Tu viens à moi avec l’épée, la lance et le javelot, mais moi je marche contre toi au Nom de Yahvé des armées, le Dieu des troupes d’Israël que tu as insultées.
46 Today, Yahweh will deliver you into my hand; I shall kil you, I shall cut off your head; today, I shallgive your corpse and the corpses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the wild beasts, so that thewhole world may know that there is a God in Israel,	46 Aujourd’hui Yahvé te livrera entre mes mains, je t’abattrai et j’enlèverai ta tête de sur tes épaules. Aujourd’hui je te donnerai en pâture, toi et toute l’armée des Philistins, aux oiseaux des cieux et aux animaux de la terre, pour que toute la terre sache qu’il y a un Dieu en Israël.
47 and this whole assembly know that Yahweh does not give victory by means of sword and spear -- forYahweh is lord of the battle and he wil deliver you into our power.'	47 Tous ceux qui sont ici rassemblés sauront que Yahvé ne sauve ni par l’épée ni par la lance, mais que la victoire appartient à Yahvé: c’est lui qui va vous livrer entre nos mains.”
48 No sooner had the Philistine started forward to confront David than David darted out of the lines andran to meet the Philistine.	48 À ce moment le Philistin avance et s’approche de David. David se décide, court droit devant lui à la rencontre du Philistin,
49 Putting his hand in his bag, he took out a stone, slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead; thestone penetrated his forehead and he fel face downwards on the ground.	49 puis il porte la main à sa sacoche, il en tire une pierre et la lance avec la fronde. Il frappe le Philistin au front, la pierre s’enfonce dans son front et le Philistin tombe la face contre terre.
50 Thus David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; he hit the Philistine and kil ed him,though he had no sword in his hand.	50 C’est ainsi que David triomphe du Philistin avec la fronde et la pierre: il abat le Philistin et le met à mort. Mais il n’a pas d’épée dans la main.
51 David ran and stood over the Philistine, seized his sword, pul ed it from the scabbard, despatchedhim and cut off his head. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.	51 Alors David court, il se tient debout sur le Philistin, il lui prend son épée qu’il tire du fourreau et, l’épée en main, il tranche la tête du Philistin. C’est ainsi qu’il l’achève. Les Philistins avaient vu la mort de leur champion: ils prirent la fuite.
52 The men of Israel and of Judah started forward, shouting their war cry, and pursued the Philistines asfar as the approaches of Gath and the gates of Ekron. The Philistine dead lay al along the road from Shaaraimas far as Gath and Ekron.	52 Les hommes d’Israël et de Juda se levèrent, poussèrent le cri de guerre et se lancèrent à la poursuite des Philistins jusqu’à l’entrée de Gat, et jusqu’aux portes d’Ékron. Tout au long du chemin qui va de Chaarayim jusqu’à Gat et Ékron, on voyait des cadavres de Philistins.
53 Turning back from their ferocious pursuit of the Philistines, the Israelites plundered their camp.	53 Quand les Israélites revinrent de cette poursuite acharnée contre les Philistins, ils pillèrent leur camp.
54 And David took the Philistine's head and brought it to Jerusalem; his weapons, however, he put in hisown tent.	54 David saisit la tête du Philistin et l’apporta à Jérusalem; quant à ses armes, il les déposa dans sa propre tente.
55 When Saul saw David going to engage the Philistine he said to Abner, the army commander, 'Abner,whose son is that boy?' 'On your life, O king,' Abner replied, 'I do not know.'	55 En voyant David partir à la rencontre du Philistin, Saül avait dit à Abner, le chef de son armée: “De qui ce garçon est-il le fils, Abner? Abner répondit: “Aussi vrai que je suis vivant, ô roi, je n’en sais rien.”
56 The king said, 'Find out whose son the lad is.'	56 Le roi lui dit: “Renseigne-toi pour savoir de qui ce garçon est le fils.”
57 When David came back after kil ing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul withthe Philistine's head in his hand.	57 Lorsque David revint d’avoir abattu le Philistin, Abner le conduisit devant Saül; il tenait à la main la tête du Philistin.
58 Saul asked him, 'Whose son are you, young man?' David replied, 'The son of your servant Jesse ofBethlehem.'	58 Saül lui dit: “De qui es-tu le fils, jeune homme?” Et David lui répondit: “Je suis le fils de ton serviteur Jessé de Bethléem.”
