1 Samuel 14

1 One day, Jonathan son of Saul said to his armour-bearer, 'Come on, let us go across to the Philistineoutpost over on the other side.' But he did not inform his father.	1 - Ora avvenne che un giorno Gionata figlio di Saul disse al giovane suo scudiero: «Vieni e passiamo fino al presidio dei Filistei che è dall'altra parte». Ma non ne disse nulla a suo padre.
2 Saul was on the outskirts of Geba, sitting under the pomegranate tree that stands near the threshing-floor; the force with him numbered about six hundred men.	2 Saul poi se ne stava all'estremità di Gabaa sotto il melagrano che era in Magron, e avea con sè un esercito di quasi seicento uomini.
3 Ahijah son of Ahitub, brother of Ichabod, son of Phinehas, son of Eli, the priest of Yahweh at Shiloh,was carrying the ephod. The force did not know that Jonathan had left.	3 Achia poi figlio di Achitob, fratello di Icabod, figlio di Finees, figlio di Eli sacerdote del Signore in Silo, portava l'efod. Ma anche il popolo ignorava dove fosse andato Gionata.
4 In the pass that Jonathan was trying to cross to reach the Philistine outpost, there is a rocky spur onone side and a rocky spur on the other; one is cal ed Bozez, the other Seneh.	4 Nella salita per la quale Gionata si sforzava d'arrivare al presidio dei Filistei eranvi pietre sporgenti da una parte e dall'altra e di qua e là due scogli dirupati a somiglianza di denti, detti l'uno Boses e l'altro Sene.
5 The first spur stands to the north facing Michmash, the other to the south facing Geba.	5 Uno di questi scogli sporgeva verso settentrione dirimpetto a Macmas; l'altro verso mezzogiorno di contro a Gabaa.
6 Jonathan said to his armour-bearer, 'Come on, let us go across to these uncircumcised people'soutpost; perhaps Yahweh wil do something for us, for Yahweh is free to grant deliverance through a few men,just as much as through many.'	6 Disse allora Gionata al giovane suo scudiero: «Vieni, passiamo al presidio di questi incirconcisi. Può darsi che il Signore agisca per noi; poichè per il Signore non è difficile salvare con pochi o con molti [uomini]».
7 His armour-bearer replied, 'Do exactly as you think. I am with you; our hearts are as one.'	7 Gli rispose lo scudiero: «Fa' quel che ti piace; va' dove brami ed io sarò teco dovunque tu vorrai».
8 Jonathan then said, 'Look, we will go across to these people and let ourselves be seen.	8 Disse Gionata: «Ecco, noi passiamo da costoro. Quando ci presenteremo a loro,
9 If they say, "Do not move until we come to you," we shal stay where we are and not go up to them.	9 se essi ci parleranno così: - State lì fino a che veniamo da voi -; noi ce ne staremo al nostro posto, e non saliremo fino a loro;
10 But if they say, "Come up to us," we shal go up, for that wil be the sign for us that Yahweh has given them into our power.'	10 ma se dicessero: - Venite su da noi -; noi ascenderemo perchè il Signore ce li avrà dati nelle mani, e questo per noi sarà il segno».
11 When the two of them let themselves be seen by the Philistine outpost, the Philistines said, 'Look,the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have been hiding.'	11 Si mostrarono pertanto entrambi al presidio dei Filistei e questi dissero: «Ecco gli Ebrei che escon dalle grotte ove stavano rintanati».
12 The men of the outpost then hailed Jonathan and his armour-bearer. 'Come up to us,' they said, 'wehave something to tel you.' Jonathan then said to his armour-bearer, 'Fol ow me up; Yahweh has given theminto the power of Israel.'	12 E gli uomini del presidio, rivolgendosi a Gionata e al suo scudiero, dissero: «Salite su da noi, che vi mostreremo una cosa». Gionata allora disse allo scudiero: «Saliamo e tu vieni dietro a me, chè il Signore li ha dati nelle mani d'Israele».
13 Jonathan clambered up on hands and feet, with his armour-bearer behind him; the Philistines fel atJonathan's onslaught, and his armour-bearer, coming behind, finished them off.	13 Arrampicandosi quindi con le mani e coi piedi, Gionata seguìto dallo scudiero, salì [fino dove essi erano]. Pertanto alcuni cadevano innanzi a Gionata, e altri erano uccisi dallo scudiero che gli veniva appresso.
14 This first kil ing made by Jonathan and his armour-bearer accounted for about twenty men . . .	14 Si ebbe così una prima strage, in cui Gionata e il suo scudiero nello spazio di un mezzo iugero, che è quanto un paio di buoi suole arare in un giorno, abbatterono circa venti uomini.
15 There was panic in the camp, in the field and throughout the army; outpost and raiding company toowere panic-stricken; the earth quaked: it was a panic from Yahweh.	15 Nacque quindi un grande spavento nell'accampamento e per le campagne; parimenti tutti quelli del presidio che erano usciti per far bottino ebbero paura e la regione intiera si trovò in preda allo sgomento; e fu come un miracolo di Dio.
16 Saul's look-out men in Geba of Benjamin could see the camp scattering in all directions.	16 Le sentinelle di Saul che erano in Gabaa di Beniamino guardarono e scòrsero quella moltitudine abbattuta e sbandata qua e là.
17 Saul then said to the force that was with him, 'Cal the roll and see who has left us.' So they cal edthe rol , and Jonathan and his armour-bearer were missing.	17 Allora Saul disse alla gente che stava con lui: «Cercate e vedete chi se n'è andato da noi». E avendo fatta ricerca trovarono mancanti Gionata e il suo scudiero.
18 Saul then said to Ahijah, 'Bring the ephod,' since he was the man who carried the ephod in Israel.	18 E Saul disse ad Achia: «Accosta l'arca di Dio». (Infatti l'arca di Dio era quivi in quel giorno coi figli d'Israele).
19 But while Saul was speaking to the priest, the turmoil in the Philistine camp grew worse and worse;and Saul said to the priest, 'Withdraw your hand.'	19 Mentre Saul parlava al sacerdote, nel campo dei Filistei s'era fatto un grande tumulto che veniva man mano crescendo e facendosi più distinto. Laonde Saul disse al sacerdote: «Ritira la mano».
20 Saul and the whole force with him then formed up and advanced to where the fighting was going on:and there they al were, drawing their swords on one another in wild confusion.	20 Poi Saul mandò un grido insieme a quei che erano con lui e accorsero al luogo del combattimento; ed ecco che la spada di ciascun [Filisteo] era rivolta contro il suo compagno e la strage s'era fatta grandissima.
21 Those Hebrews who had earlier taken service with the Philistines and had accompanied them intocamp, now defected to the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.	21 Ma anche gli Ebrei che nei giorni precedenti eransi associati ai Filistei ed erano saliti con essi al campo tornarono a mettersi cogli Israeliti che erano insieme a Saul e a Gionata.
22 Similarly, all those Israelites who had been hiding in the highlands of Ephraim, hearing that thePhilistines were on the run, chased after them and joined in the fight.	22 Parimenti gli Israeliti che s'erano rifugiati tra i monti di Efraim, all'udire che i Filistei eran fuggiti, si associarono ai loro per combattere e furono con Saul circa diecimila uomini.
23 That day Yahweh gave Israel the victory. The fighting reached the other side of Beth-Horon.	23 Così il Signore salvò in quel giorno Israele; e la battaglia si stese fino a Betaven.
24 As the men of Israel were hard pressed that day, Saul pronounced this imprecation over the people,'A curse on anyone who eats food before evening, before I have taken revenge on my enemies!' So none of thepeople so much as tasted food.	24 Gli Israeliti si riunirono in quel giorno, ma Saul scongiurò il popolo, dicendo: «Maledetto l'uomo che toccherà cibo prima di sera, fino a che io mi sia presa vendetta dei miei nemici». E tutto il popolo non mangiò affatto.
25 Now there was a honeycomb out in the open.	25 Or tutto il popolo di quel paese giunse in un bosco, dove era del miele per terra.
26 The people came to the honeycomb, the honey was dripping out, but no one put a hand to his mouth,the people being in awe of the oath.	26 Entrato dunque il popolo nel bosco e avendo visto il miele che colava, nessuno si portò la mano alla bocca, perchè il popolo temeva il giuramento.
27 Jonathan, however, not having heard his father bind the people with the oath, reached with the endof the stick which he was carrying, thrust it into the honeycomb and put it to his mouth; whereupon his eyes grewbrighter.	27 Gionata invece che non aveva udito il padre scongiurare il popolo, stese l'estremità del bastone che teneva in mano, l'immerse in un favo di miele, e si portò la mano alla bocca, e gli si rischiarò la vista.
28 One of the people then spoke up. 'Your father', he said, 'has bound the people with this oath: "Acurse on anyone who eats anything today." '	28 Uno però del popolo, rivolgendosi a lui, gli disse: «Tuo padre obbligò con giuramento tutti, dicendo: - Maledetto l'uomo che oggi toccherà cibo -», (eppure il popolo era sfinito).
29 'My father has brought trouble on the country,' Jonathan replied. 'See how much brighter my eyes arefor having eaten this mouthful of honey.	29 Allora Gionata disse: «Mio padre ha turbato il paese, voi vedete come io mi sia rischiarato la vista dopo aver gustato un po' di questo miele.
30 By the same token, if the people had been allowed to eat some of the booty which they had capturedfrom the enemy today, would not the defeat of the Philistines have been all the greater?'	30 Quanto più se il popolo avesse mangiato della preda trovata presso i suoi nemici? Non è vero che allora si sarebbe fatta una più grande strage di Filistei?».
31 That day the Philistines were beaten from Michmash all the way to Aijalon, until the people wereutterly exhausted.	31 Quel giorno adunque [gli Israeliti] percossero i Filistei da Macmas ad Aialon; il popolo era sfinito,
32 The people flung themselves on the booty and, taking sheep, bul ocks and calves, slaughtered themthere on the ground and ate them with the blood.	32 gettandosi perciò sulla preda prese pecore, buoi e vitelli e li scannò per terra e ne mangiò [le carni] col sangue.
33 Saul was informed, 'The people are sinning against Yahweh by eating with the blood!' He said, 'Youhave not kept faith! Roll me a large stone here!'	33 Fu quindi riferito a Saul che il popolo avea peccato contro il Signore mangiando [carne] col sangue, onde disse: «Avete prevaricato: fate rotolare innanzi a me un grosso macigno».
34 Saul then said, 'Scatter among the people and say, "Everyone is to bring his bul ock or his sheep tome here." You wil slaughter them here and eat, and not sin against Yahweh by eating with the blood.' Eachindividual brought what he happened to have that night, and they al slaughtered in the same place.	34 Poi soggiunse: «Ed ora andate attorno tra il popolo e dite che ciascuno mi conduca il suo bue e il suo ariete e uccidetelo sopra questa [pietra] e mangiatene e così non offenderete il Signore, mangiando [carne] con sangue». E ciascuno del popolo trasse di propria mano il suo bue fino a notte fatta, e quivi li uccisero.
35 Saul built an altar to Yahweh; it was the first altar he had built to Yahweh.	35 Saul poi edificò un altare al Signore e quello fu il primo altare da lui edificato al Signore.
36 Saul said, 'Let us go down under cover of dark and plunder the Philistines until dawn; we shal notleave one of them alive.' 'Do whatever you think right,' they replied. But the priest said, 'Let us approach Godhere.'	36 Disse poi Saul: «Diamo stanotte addosso ai Filistei e saccheggiamoli fino a che non spunti il giorno e non lasciamone neppur uno». Il popolo rispose: «Fa' pure quanto ti piace». Allora il sacerdote disse: «Accostiamoci qui a Dio».
37 Saul consulted God, 'Shall I go down and pursue the Philistines? Will you hand them over to Israel?'But he gave him no reply that day.	37 Saul consultò il Signore dicendo: «Debbo dare addosso ai Filistei? Li darai tu nelle mani di Israele?». Ma quel giorno Dio non diede alcuna risposta.
38 Saul then said, 'Come forward, al you leaders of the people; consider carefully where today's sinmay lie;	38 Perciò disse Saul: «Accostatevi tutti voi capi del popolo e sappiate e vedete per colpa di chi sia avvenuto oggi questo peccato.
39 for as Yahweh lives who gives victory to Israel, even if the sin lies with Jonathan my son, he shal beput to death.' But not one out of al the people answered.	39 Viva il Signore salvator d'Israele! Anche se il colpevole fosse mio figlio Gionata, morrà senza remissione». Nè a ciò si oppose alcuno del popolo.
40 He then said to al Israel, 'Stand on one side, and I and Jonathan my son wil stand on the other.' Andthe people replied to Saul, 'Do as you think right.'	40 Poi disse a tutto Israele: «Voi mettetevi da una parte; io con mio figlio Gionata ci porremo dall'altra». Rispose il popolo: «Fa' quel che ti par bene».
41 Saul then said, 'Yahweh, God of Israel, why did you not answer your servant today? Yahweh, God ofIsrael, if the fault lies with me or with my son Jonathan, give urim: if the fault lies with your people Israel, givethummim.' Jonathan and Saul were indicated and the people went free.	41 Quindi Saul si volse al Signore, Dio d'Israele, e disse: «Signore Dio d'Israele dà un segno. Perchè non rispondesti oggi al servo tuo? Se questa colpa deve imputarsi a me o al figlio mio Gionata dallo a conoscere; se la colpa è del tuo popolo dà a conoscere la tua santità». Or vennero designati Gionata e Saul e il popolo fu rimandato;
42 Saul said, 'Cast the lot between me and my son Jonathan,' and Jonathan was indicated.	42 poi Saul soggiunse: «Gettate la sorte tra me e Gionata mio figlio», ed essendo stato designato Gionata,
43 'I only tasted a mouthful of honey off the end of the stick which I was carrying. But I am ready to die.'	43 Saul gli disse: «Dimmi che cosa hai fatto?». E Gionata glielo indicò e disse: «Ho appena gustato colla estremità del bastone che aveva in mano un po' di miele ed ecco che mi toccherà morire».
44 Saul said, 'May God bring unnameable il s on me, and worse ones too, if you do not die, Jonathan!'	44 E Saul soggiunse: «Il Signore faccia a me ciò e peggio se non morrai, o Gionata».
45 But the people said to Saul, 'Must Jonathan die after winning this great victory for Israel? We wilnever al ow that! As Yahweh lives, not one hair of his head shal fal to the ground, for his deeds today havebeen done with the help of God.' And so the people ransomed Jonathan and he was not put to death.	45 Ma il popolo disse a Saul: «Che debba morir Gionata, che ha operato questa grande liberazione in Israele? È un delitto. Viva il Signore, non cadrà a terra un sol capello della sua testa, poichè oggi egli ha operato con Dio». Così il popolo liberò Gionata da morte.
46 Saul decided not to pursue the Philistines, and the Philistines retired to their own territory.	46 Saul poi si ritirò, e non inseguì più i Filistei che ne ritornarono alle loro terre.
47 Saul consolidated his rule over Israel and made war on al his enemies on al fronts: on Moab, theAmmonites, Edom, the king of Zobah and the Philistines; whichever way he turned, he was victorious.	47 Stabilito il suo regno sopra Israele, Saul fece guerra all'ingiro contro tutti i suoi nemici: contro Moab e i figli di Ammon ed Edom e i re di Soba e i Filistei, e ovunque si volgeva riusciva vittorioso.
48 He did great deeds of valour; he defeated the Amalekites and delivered Israel from those who usedto pil age him.	48 Di più, radunato un esercito, percosse gli Amaleciti e liberò Israele dai suoi devastatori.
49 Saul's sons were: Jonathan, Ishvi and Malchishua. The names of his two daughters were: the elder,Merab, and the younger, Michal.	49 I figli di Saul furono Gionata, Jessui e Melchisua, e delle sue due figliuole, la primogenita si chiamava Merob e la minore Micol.
50 The name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of his army commander wasAbner son of Ner, Saul's uncle.	50 E il nome della moglie di Saul era Achinoam figlia di Achimaas; e il nome del capo del suo esercito era Abner figlio di Ner, zio di Saul.
51 Kish father of Saul, and Ner father of Abner were the sons of Abiel.	51 Ora Cis fu padre di Saul e Ner, padre di Abner, fu figlio di Abiel.
52 There was fierce warfare with the Philistines throughout Saul's life. Any strong or valiant man whocaught Saul's eye, he recruited into his service.	52 In tutta la vita di Saul vi fu guerra accanita contro i Filistei, poichè come Saul vedeva un uomo forte e atto alla guerra se lo associava.
