1 Samuel 14

1 One day, Jonathan son of Saul said to his armour-bearer, 'Come on, let us go across to the Philistineoutpost over on the other side.' But he did not inform his father.	1 Un día, Jonatán, hijo de Saúl, dijo a su escudero: «Ven, vamos a cruzar hasta la avanzadilla de los filisteos que están en este paso», pero nada dijo a su padre.
2 Saul was on the outskirts of Geba, sitting under the pomegranate tree that stands near the threshing-floor; the force with him numbered about six hundred men.	2 Saúl estaba situado en el límite de Gueba, bajo el granado que está cerca de la era, y las gentes que estaban con él eran como unos seiscientos hombres.
3 Ahijah son of Ahitub, brother of Ichabod, son of Phinehas, son of Eli, the priest of Yahweh at Shiloh,was carrying the ephod. The force did not know that Jonathan had left.	3 Ajías, hijo de Ajitub, hermano de Ikabod, hijo de Pinjás, hijo de Elí, sacerdote de Yahveh en Silo, llevaba el efod. La tropa no advirtió que Jonatán se había marchado.
4 In the pass that Jonathan was trying to cross to reach the Philistine outpost, there is a rocky spur onone side and a rocky spur on the other; one is cal ed Bozez, the other Seneh.	4 En el paso que Jonatán intentaba franquear para llegar a la avanzadilla de los filisteos, hay un picacho por un lado y un picacho por el otro. Uno se llama Boses y el otro Senné;
5 The first spur stands to the north facing Michmash, the other to the south facing Geba.	5 el primer picacho está al norte, frente a Mikmás, el segundo al sur, frente a Gueba.
6 Jonathan said to his armour-bearer, 'Come on, let us go across to these uncircumcised people'soutpost; perhaps Yahweh wil do something for us, for Yahweh is free to grant deliverance through a few men,just as much as through many.'	6 Jonatán dijo a su escudero: «Ven, crucemos hasta la avanzadilla de esos incircuncisos. Acaso Yahveh haga algo por nosotros, porque nada impide a Yahveh dar la victoria con pocos o con muchos».
7 His armour-bearer replied, 'Do exactly as you think. I am with you; our hearts are as one.'	7 Su escudero respondió: «Haz todo lo que tu corazón te dicte. Por mi parte estoy contigo, a tu voluntad».
8 Jonathan then said, 'Look, we will go across to these people and let ourselves be seen.	8 Jonatán dijo: «Vamos a pasar hacia esa gente y nos haremos ver de ellos.
9 If they say, "Do not move until we come to you," we shal stay where we are and not go up to them.	9 Si nos dicen: “¡Alto ahí! hasta que lleguemos a vosotros”, nos quedaremos en el sitio y no subiremos a ellos.
10 But if they say, "Come up to us," we shal go up, for that wil be the sign for us that Yahweh has given them into our power.'	10 Pero si nos dicen: “Subid hacia nosotros,” subiremos, porque Yahveh los ha entregado en nuestras manos; esto nos servirá de señal».
11 When the two of them let themselves be seen by the Philistine outpost, the Philistines said, 'Look,the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have been hiding.'	11 Cuando se dejaron ver de la avanzadilla de los filisteos, éstos dijeron: «Mirad los hebreos que salen de los escondrijos donde se habían metido».
12 The men of the outpost then hailed Jonathan and his armour-bearer. 'Come up to us,' they said, 'wehave something to tel you.' Jonathan then said to his armour-bearer, 'Fol ow me up; Yahweh has given theminto the power of Israel.'	12 Y la gente de la avanzadilla, dirigiéndose a Jonatán y a su escudero, dijeron: «Subid hacia nosotros, que os vamos a enseñar algo». Entonces Jonatán dijo a su escudero: «Sube detrás de mí, pues Yahveh los ha entregado en manos de Israel».
13 Jonathan clambered up on hands and feet, with his armour-bearer behind him; the Philistines fel atJonathan's onslaught, and his armour-bearer, coming behind, finished them off.	13 Subió Jonatán ayudándose de pies y manos, y su escudero le seguía. Caían los filisteos ante Jonatán y detrás de él su escudero los iba rematando.
14 This first kil ing made by Jonathan and his armour-bearer accounted for about twenty men . . .	14 Este primer estrago que hicieron Jonatán y su escudero fue de una veintena de hombres...
15 There was panic in the camp, in the field and throughout the army; outpost and raiding company toowere panic-stricken; the earth quaked: it was a panic from Yahweh.	15 Cundió el terror en el campo y en el campamento y en la gente toda; la avanzadilla y los cuerpos de descubierta fueron presa del espanto, la tierra tembló y hubo un terror de Dios.
16 Saul's look-out men in Geba of Benjamin could see the camp scattering in all directions.	16 Los escuchas de Saúl que estaban en Gueba de Benjamín vieron que el campamento se agitaba de un lado para otro,
17 Saul then said to the force that was with him, 'Cal the roll and see who has left us.' So they cal edthe rol , and Jonathan and his armour-bearer were missing.	17 y Saúl dijo a las tropas que estaban con él: «Pasad revista y ved quién se ha marchado de los nuestros». Se pasó revista y vieron que faltaban Jonatán y su escudero.
18 Saul then said to Ahijah, 'Bring the ephod,' since he was the man who carried the ephod in Israel.	18 Entonces Saúl dijo a Ajías: «Trae el efod», porque este era el que llevaba el efod en presencia de Israel.
19 But while Saul was speaking to the priest, the turmoil in the Philistine camp grew worse and worse;and Saul said to the priest, 'Withdraw your hand.'	19 Pero mientras Saúl hablaba al sacerdote, el tumulto del campamento filisteo iba creciendo y Saúl dijo al sacerdote: «Retira tu mano».
20 Saul and the whole force with him then formed up and advanced to where the fighting was going on:and there they al were, drawing their swords on one another in wild confusion.	20 Saúl y toda la tropa que estaba con él se reunieron y llegaron al campo de batalla, y he aquí que la espada de cada uno se volvía contra el otro, ¡un enorme desconcierto!
21 Those Hebrews who had earlier taken service with the Philistines and had accompanied them intocamp, now defected to the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.	21 Los hebreos que de antes estaban al servicio de los filisteos y que habían subido con ellos al campamento, también desertaron y se pasaron a los israelitas que estaban con Saúl y Jonatán.
22 Similarly, all those Israelites who had been hiding in the highlands of Ephraim, hearing that thePhilistines were on the run, chased after them and joined in the fight.	22 Todos los israelitas que se habían escondido en la montaña de Efraím, al saber que los filisteos huían, los persiguieron hostigándolos.
23 That day Yahweh gave Israel the victory. The fighting reached the other side of Beth-Horon.	23 Aquel día Yahveh dio la victoria a Israel. El combate se extendió más allá de Bet Jorón.
24 As the men of Israel were hard pressed that day, Saul pronounced this imprecation over the people,'A curse on anyone who eats food before evening, before I have taken revenge on my enemies!' So none of thepeople so much as tasted food.	24 Los hombres de Israel estaban en gran apuro aquel día y Saúl pronunció una imprecación sobre el pueblo: «Maldito el hombre que coma algo antes del anochecer, antes que me haya vengado de mis enemigos». Y nadie del pueblo probó bocado.
25 Now there was a honeycomb out in the open.	25 Había, pues, un panal de miel por el suelo,
26 The people came to the honeycomb, the honey was dripping out, but no one put a hand to his mouth,the people being in awe of the oath.	26 y el pueblo llegó al panal cuando la miel estaba destilando, pero nadie se llevó la mano a su boca, porque el pueblo temía la imprecación.
27 Jonathan, however, not having heard his father bind the people with the oath, reached with the endof the stick which he was carrying, thrust it into the honeycomb and put it to his mouth; whereupon his eyes grewbrighter.	27 Jonatán no había oído la imprecación que su padre había pronunciado sobre el pueblo y alargó la punta de la vara que tenía en la mano, la metió en el panal y después llevó la mano a su boca y le brillaron los ojos.
28 One of the people then spoke up. 'Your father', he said, 'has bound the people with this oath: "Acurse on anyone who eats anything today." '	28 Uno del pueblo le habló diciendo: «Tu padre ha pronunciado solemnemente esta imprecación sobre el pueblo; ha dicho “Maldito el hombre que coma hoy algo.”»
29 'My father has brought trouble on the country,' Jonathan replied. 'See how much brighter my eyes arefor having eaten this mouthful of honey.	29 Jonatán respondió: «Mi padre ha causado un trastorno al país. Ved cómo tengo los ojos más brillantes por haber tomado este poco de miel.
30 By the same token, if the people had been allowed to eat some of the booty which they had capturedfrom the enemy today, would not the defeat of the Philistines have been all the greater?'	30 Pues si la tropa hubiese comido hoy del botín tomado al enemigo ¿no hubiera sido mayor el estrago de los filisteos?»
31 That day the Philistines were beaten from Michmash all the way to Aijalon, until the people wereutterly exhausted.	31 Aquel día fueron batidos los filisteos desde Mikmás hasta Ayyalón y la gente quedó extenuada.
32 The people flung themselves on the booty and, taking sheep, bul ocks and calves, slaughtered themthere on the ground and ate them with the blood.	32 La tropa se arrojó sobre el botín y tomando ganado menor, bueyes y terneros, los immoló sobre el suelo y lo comieron con la sangre.
33 Saul was informed, 'The people are sinning against Yahweh by eating with the blood!' He said, 'Youhave not kept faith! Roll me a large stone here!'	33 Avisaron a Saúl: «El pueblo está pecando contra Yahveh comiendo la sangre». El entonces dijo: «Habéis sido infieles. Rodadme hasta aquí una piedra grande».
34 Saul then said, 'Scatter among the people and say, "Everyone is to bring his bul ock or his sheep tome here." You wil slaughter them here and eat, and not sin against Yahweh by eating with the blood.' Eachindividual brought what he happened to have that night, and they al slaughtered in the same place.	34 Luego dijo: «Repartíos entre el pueblo y decidles: que cada uno traiga su buey o su carnero; los immolaréis aquí y comeréis, sin pecar contra Yahveh por comerlo con sangre». Todos los hombres llevaron cada cual lo que tenía aquella noche y lo immolaron allí.
35 Saul built an altar to Yahweh; it was the first altar he had built to Yahweh.	35 Alzó Saúl un altar a Yahveh; este fue el primer altar que edificó.
36 Saul said, 'Let us go down under cover of dark and plunder the Philistines until dawn; we shal notleave one of them alive.' 'Do whatever you think right,' they replied. But the priest said, 'Let us approach Godhere.'	36 Saúl dijo: «Bajemos durante la noche en persecución de los filisteos y saqueémoslos hasta el amanecer; no dejaremos ni un solo hombre». Le respondieron: «Haz lo que mejor te parezca». Pero el sacerdote dijo: «Acerquémonos aquí a Dios».
37 Saul consulted God, 'Shall I go down and pursue the Philistines? Will you hand them over to Israel?'But he gave him no reply that day.	37 Consultó Saúl a Dios: «¿Bajaré en persecución de los filisteos? ¿Los entregarás en manos de Israel?» Pero no respondió en aquella ocasión.
38 Saul then said, 'Come forward, al you leaders of the people; consider carefully where today's sinmay lie;	38 Entonces dijo Saúl: «Acercaos aquí todos los principales del pueblo. Investigad en qué ha consistido el pecado de hoy.
39 for as Yahweh lives who gives victory to Israel, even if the sin lies with Jonathan my son, he shal beput to death.' But not one out of al the people answered.	39 ¡Vive Yahveh! que ha salvado a Israel, que aunque se trate de mi hijo Jonatán, morirá sin remisión». Nadie del pueblo se atrevió a responderle.
40 He then said to al Israel, 'Stand on one side, and I and Jonathan my son wil stand on the other.' Andthe people replied to Saul, 'Do as you think right.'	40 Dijo a todo Israel: «Poneos a un lado, y yo y mi hijo Jonatán nos pondremos al otro», y el pueblo respondió a Saúl: «Haz lo que mejor te parezca».
41 Saul then said, 'Yahweh, God of Israel, why did you not answer your servant today? Yahweh, God ofIsrael, if the fault lies with me or with my son Jonathan, give urim: if the fault lies with your people Israel, givethummim.' Jonathan and Saul were indicated and the people went free.	41 Dijo entonces Saúl: «Yahveh Dios de Israel, ¿por qué no respondes hoy a tu siervo? Si el pecado es mío o de mi hijo Jonatán, Yahveh Dios de Israel, da urim; si el pecado es de tu pueblo Israel, da tummim». Fueron señalado Saúl y Jonatán, quedando libre el pueblo.
42 Saul said, 'Cast the lot between me and my son Jonathan,' and Jonathan was indicated.	42 Saúl dijo: «Sortead entre mi hijo Jonatán y yo»; y fue señalado Jonatán.
43 'I only tasted a mouthful of honey off the end of the stick which I was carrying. But I am ready to die.'	43 Dijo entonces Saúl a Jonatán: «Cuéntame lo que has hecho». Jonatán respondió: «No he hecho más que probar un poco de miel con la punta de la vara que tenía en la mano. Estoy dispuesto a morir».
44 Saul said, 'May God bring unnameable il s on me, and worse ones too, if you do not die, Jonathan!'	44 Saúl replicó: «Que Dios me haga esto y me añada esto otro si no mueres, Jonatán».
45 But the people said to Saul, 'Must Jonathan die after winning this great victory for Israel? We wilnever al ow that! As Yahweh lives, not one hair of his head shal fal to the ground, for his deeds today havebeen done with the help of God.' And so the people ransomed Jonathan and he was not put to death.	45 Pero el pueblo dijo a Saúl: «¿Es que va a morir Jonatán siendo él quien ha conseguido esta gran victoria en Israel? ¡Dios nos libre! ¡Vive Yahveh! que no caerá en tierra ni un cabello de su cabeza, porque con ayuda de Dios lo hizo». Así rescató el pueblo a Jonatán y no murió.
46 Saul decided not to pursue the Philistines, and the Philistines retired to their own territory.	46 Regresó Saúl de la persecución de los filisteos y los filisteos alcanzaron su país.
47 Saul consolidated his rule over Israel and made war on al his enemies on al fronts: on Moab, theAmmonites, Edom, the king of Zobah and the Philistines; whichever way he turned, he was victorious.	47 Cuando Saúl se constituyó rey sobre Israel guerreó por todas partes contre todos sus enemigos: contra Moab, los ammonitas, Edom, el rey de Sobá y los filisteos; doquiera se dirigía resultaba vencedor.
48 He did great deeds of valour; he defeated the Amalekites and delivered Israel from those who usedto pil age him.	48 Hizo proezas de valor, batió a los amalecitas y libró a Israel del poder de los que le saqueaban.
49 Saul's sons were: Jonathan, Ishvi and Malchishua. The names of his two daughters were: the elder,Merab, and the younger, Michal.	49 Los hijos de Saúl fueron: Jonatán, Isyó y Malki Súa. Los nombres de sus dos hijas eran: Merab la mayor y Mikal la más pequeña.
50 The name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of his army commander wasAbner son of Ner, Saul's uncle.	50 La mujer de Saúl se llamaba Ajinoam, hija de Ajimaas. El jefe de su ejército se llamaba Abner, hijo de Ner, tío de Saúl:
51 Kish father of Saul, and Ner father of Abner were the sons of Abiel.	51 Quis, padre de Saúl, y Ner, padre de Abner, eran hijos de Abiel.
52 There was fierce warfare with the Philistines throughout Saul's life. Any strong or valiant man whocaught Saul's eye, he recruited into his service.	52 Hubo una guerra encarnizada contra los filisteos toda la vida de Saúl. En cuanto Saúl veía un hombre fuerte y valeroso, se lo incorporaba.
