1 About a month later, Nahash the Ammonite marched up and laid siege to Jabesh in Gilead. Al themen of Jabesh said to Nahash, 'Make a treaty with us and we wil be your subjects.'	1 E avvenne, che circa un mese dopo si mosse Naas Ammonite, e principiò ad assediare Jabes di Galaad. E tutti gli uomini di Jabes dissero a Naas: Prendici in confederazione, e sarem tuoi servi.
2 Nahash the Ammonite replied, 'I shal make a treaty with you only on this condition, that I put out alyour right eyes, and I wil make it a taunt to the whole of Israel.'	2 Ma Naas Ammonite rispose loro: La confederazione che io farò con voi sarà di cavarvi a tutti quanti l’occhio destro, e di rendervi l’obbrobrio di tutto Israele.
3 The elders of Jabesh said to him, 'Give us seven days' grace while we send messengers throughoutthe territory of Israel, and if no one comes to our help, we wil come out to you.'	3 E i seniori d’ Jabes gli dissero: Concedi a noi sette giorni, affinchè mandiamo nunzii per tutto Israele: e se non vi sarà chi prenda la nostra difesa, ci arrenderemo a te.
4 The messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, and reported this to the people, and al the people weptaloud.	4 Venner pertanto i messaggieri a Gabaa (patria) di Saul, e riferirono queste cose dinanzi al popolo: e tutto il popolo alzò la voce, e pianse.
5 Now Saul was just then coming in from the fields behind his oxen, and he said, 'What is wrong? Whyare the people weeping?' They explained to him what the men of Jabesh had said.	5 Quand'ecco Saul tornava dal campo, seguendo i bovi, e disse: che ha egli il popolo che piange? E raccontarono a lui le parole degli uomini di Jabes.
6 And the spirit of Yahweh seized on Saul when he heard these words, and he fel into a fury.	6 E lo Spirito del Signore investì Saul, udite che ebbe quelle parole, e si accese di furore stragrande.
7 He took a yoke of oxen, cut them into pieces and sent these by messengers throughout the territory ofIsrael with these words, 'Anyone who wil not march with Saul wil have the same done to his oxen!' At this, apanic from Yahweh swept on the people and they marched out as one man.	7 E preso l'uno e l’altro bue li mise in pezzi, e li mandò per tutte le parti d'Israele per mano dei messaggieri, dicendo: Chiunque non si moverà, e non andrà dietro a Saul, e a Samuele, saran così trattati i suoi bovi. Entrò adunque nel popolo il timor del Signore, e si mossero, come se fossero un sol uomo.
8 Saul inspected them at Bezek; there were three hundred thousand of Israel and thirty thousand ofJudah.	8 Ed ei ne fece la rassegna a Bezech: ed erano i figliuoli d'Israele trecento mila: e gli uomini di Giuda trenta mila.
9 Then he said to the messengers who had come, 'This is what you are to say to the people of Jabeshin Gilead, "Tomorrow, by the time that the sun is hot, help wil reach you." ' The messengers went and reportedthis to the people of Jabesh who were overjoyed;	9 E dissero a que' messaggieri che eran venuti: Direte così agli uomini di Jabes di Galaad: Domane, quando il sole scalderà, sarete salvi. I messaggeri adunque partirono, e portarono l'avviso a quelli di Jabes, i quali si rallegrarono,
10 they said to Nahash, 'Tomorrow we shal come out to you and you can do whatever you like to us.'	10 E dissero (a' nemici): Domattina verremo a voi, e farete di noi quello che vi parrà.
11 The next day, Saul disposed the army in three contingents, which burst into the middle of the campduring the dawn watch and slaughtered the Ammonites until high noon. The survivors were so scattered that notwo of them were left together.	11 E venuto il dì seguente, Saul fece tre parti del popolo: ed entrò nel mezzo degli alloggiamenti nella vigilia del mattino, e trucidò gli Ammoniti, fino a tanto che il sole principiò a scaldare: e que' che restarono, furon dispersi in guisa che non se ne videro due insieme.
12 The people then said to Samuel, 'Who said, "Must we have Saul reigning over us?" Hand the menover, for us to put them to death.'	12 E il popolo disse a Samuele: Chi son coloro che hanno detto: Sarà egli nostro re Saul? Dateci costoro, e li metteremo a morte.
13 'No one must be put to death today,' Saul said, 'for today Yahweh has intervened to rescue Israel.'	13 Ma Saul disse: Non sarà messo a morte nissuno in questo giorno, perchè oggi il Signore ha salvato Israele.
14 Samuel then said to the people, 'Let us now go to Gilgal and reaffirm the monarchy there.'	14 E Samuele disse al popolo: Venite, andiamo a Galgala, e ivi confermiamo il regno.
15 The people then al went to Gilgal. And there, at Gilgal, they proclaimed Saul king before Yahweh;they offered communion sacrifices before Yahweh, and there Saul and al the people of Israel gave themselvesover to great rejoicing.	15 E tutto il popolo andò a Galgala, e in Galgala fecero re Saulle dinanzi al Signore, e immolarono al Signore ostie pacifiche. E Saul e tutti gli uomini d'Israele fecero ivi gran festa.
