1 About a month later, Nahash the Ammonite marched up and laid siege to Jabesh in Gilead. Al themen of Jabesh said to Nahash, 'Make a treaty with us and we wil be your subjects.'	1 Environ un mois plus tard, Nahach l’Ammonite vint établir son camp contre Yabech de Galaad. Tous les gens de Yabech dirent à Nahach: “Fais la paix avec nous et nous te servirons.”
2 Nahash the Ammonite replied, 'I shal make a treaty with you only on this condition, that I put out alyour right eyes, and I wil make it a taunt to the whole of Israel.'	2 Mais Nahach l’Ammonite répondit: “Voici à quelle condition je ferai la paix avec vous: je vous crèverai à tous l’œil droit, et ce sera une humiliation pour tout Israël.”
3 The elders of Jabesh said to him, 'Give us seven days' grace while we send messengers throughoutthe territory of Israel, and if no one comes to our help, we wil come out to you.'	3 Les anciens de Yabech lui dirent: “Laisse-nous un répit de sept jours pour que nous envoyions des messagers dans tout le pays d’Israël. Et si personne ne vient nous délivrer, nous nous rendrons à toi.”
4 The messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, and reported this to the people, and al the people weptaloud.	4 Les messagers arrivèrent à Guibéa de Saül et rapportèrent au peuple toute cette affaire: tout le peuple poussa une grande lamentation et pleura.
5 Now Saul was just then coming in from the fields behind his oxen, and he said, 'What is wrong? Whyare the people weeping?' They explained to him what the men of Jabesh had said.	5 Or c’était le moment où Saül rentrait de la campagne derrière ses bœufs. Il demanda: “Pourquoi le peuple pleure-t-il ainsi?” Et on lui répéta les paroles des gens de Yabech.
6 And the spirit of Yahweh seized on Saul when he heard these words, and he fel into a fury.	6 Quand Saül entendit ces paroles, l’esprit de Dieu fondit sur lui et il se mit en colère.
7 He took a yoke of oxen, cut them into pieces and sent these by messengers throughout the territory ofIsrael with these words, 'Anyone who wil not march with Saul wil have the same done to his oxen!' At this, apanic from Yahweh swept on the people and they marched out as one man.	7 Il prit une paire de bœufs, il la dépeça et en fit porter les morceaux dans tout le territoire d’Israël par les messagers de Yabech; ils étaient chargés de dire: “Celui qui ne marchera pas à la suite de Saül et à la suite de Samuel, je lui ferai ce que j’ai fait à ces bœufs.” Alors la crainte de Yahvé s’empara de tout le peuple et tous marchèrent comme un seul homme.
8 Saul inspected them at Bezek; there were three hundred thousand of Israel and thirty thousand ofJudah.	8 Saül les passa en revue à Bézek, les Israélites étaient 300 000 et les hommes de Juda 30 000.
9 Then he said to the messengers who had come, 'This is what you are to say to the people of Jabeshin Gilead, "Tomorrow, by the time that the sun is hot, help wil reach you." ' The messengers went and reportedthis to the people of Jabesh who were overjoyed;	9 On donna donc cette réponse aux messagers qui étaient venus: “Voici ce que vous direz aux gens de Yabech de Galaad: Demain, lorsque le soleil commencera à chauffer, vous recevrez du secours.” Les messagers rapportèrent cette nouvelle aux gens de Yabech qui en furent tout heureux.
10 they said to Nahash, 'Tomorrow we shal come out to you and you can do whatever you like to us.'	10 Aussitôt ils dirent à Nahach: “Demain nous nous rendrons à toi et tu nous feras tout ce qui te semble bon.”
11 The next day, Saul disposed the army in three contingents, which burst into the middle of the campduring the dawn watch and slaughtered the Ammonites until high noon. The survivors were so scattered that notwo of them were left together.	11 Le lendemain Saül répartit le peuple en trois groupes qui envahirent le camp des Ammonites au petit matin et les combattirent jusqu’au plus chaud du jour. Ceux qui échappèrent se dispersèrent et il n’en resta pas deux ensemble.
12 The people then said to Samuel, 'Who said, "Must we have Saul reigning over us?" Hand the menover, for us to put them to death.'	12 Le peuple dit alors à Samuel: “Qui osait dire: ‘Saül ne régnera pas sur nous?’ Livrez-nous ces hommes pour que nous les mettions à mort.”
13 'No one must be put to death today,' Saul said, 'for today Yahweh has intervened to rescue Israel.'	13 Mais Samuel répondit: “Personne ne sera mis à mort aujourd’hui, car c’est un jour où Yahvé a sauvé Israël.”
14 Samuel then said to the people, 'Let us now go to Gilgal and reaffirm the monarchy there.'	14 Samuel ajouta: “Venez et rendons-nous à Guilgal: nous allons inaugurer la royauté.”
15 The people then al went to Gilgal. And there, at Gilgal, they proclaimed Saul king before Yahweh;they offered communion sacrifices before Yahweh, and there Saul and al the people of Israel gave themselvesover to great rejoicing.	15 Tout le peuple se réunit à Guilgal et Saül y fut proclamé roi devant Yahvé. On offrit à Yahvé des sacrifices de communion, et ce fut une très grande fête pour Saül et tous les Israélites.
