1 In the days when the Judges were governing, a famine occurred in the country and a certain man fromBethlehem of Judah went-he, his wife and his two sons -- to live in the Plains of Moab.	1 - Quando i Giudici governavano, al tempo d'uno di loro, fu carestia nella regione. Ed un uomo di Betleem di Giuda andò pellegrino nella terra dei Moabiti, con la moglie e due figli.
2 The man was called Elimelech, his wife Naomi and his two sons Mahlon and Chilion; they wereEphrathites from Bethlehem of Judah. Going to the Plains of Moab, they settled there.	2 Egli si chiamava Elimelec, la moglie sua Noemi, e i due figli uno Maalon e l'altro Chelion, efratei, di Betleem di Giuda. Venuti dunque nella Moabitide, vi presero dimora.
3 Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died, and she and her two sons were left.	3 Morto Elimelec marito di Noemi, questa vi rimase coi figli,
4 These married Moabite women: one was called Orpah and the other Ruth. They lived there for aboutten years.	4 i quali presero mogli moabite, una chiamata Orfa, e l'altra Rut. Vi stettero dieci anni,
5 Mahlon and Chilion then both died too, and Naomi was thus bereft of her two sons and her husband.	5 e poi morirono ambedue, Maalon cioè e Chelion; e quella donna rimase orbata del marito e de' due figli.
6 She then decided to come back from the Plains of Moab with her daughters-in-law, having heard in thePlains of Moab that God had visited his people and given them food.	6 Allora si mosse dalla terra di Moab, con ambedue le nuore, per tornare in patria; aveva infatti udito dire che il Signore riguardando benignamente il suo popolo gli aveva mandato di che vivere.
7 So, with her daughters-in-law, she left the place where she was living and they took the road back toJudah.	7 Uscì dunque con ambedue le nuore dalla terra straniera, e, stando già sulla via che la riconduceva nella terra di Giuda,
8 Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, 'Go back, each of you to your mother's house.	8 disse loro: «Tornate nella casa di vostra madre; sia con voi misericordioso il Signore, come voi lo siete state con quei morti e con me;
9 May Yahweh show you faithful love, as you have done to those who have died and to me. Yahweh grantthat you may each find happiness with a husband!' She then kissed them, but they began weeping loudly,	9 vi conceda di trovar pace nella casa dei mariti che troverete». E le baciò. Ma quelle si misero a piangere, e alzata la voce,
10 and said, 'No, we shal go back with you to your people.'	10 dissero: «Noi verremo con te, nel tuo popolo».
11 'Go home, daughters,' Naomi replied. 'Why come with me? Have I any more sons in my womb to makehusbands for you?	11 Ed essa: «Tornate indietro, figliuole mie; perchè venire con me? Ho io forse in seno altri figli, che possiate sperare da me i mariti?
12 Go home, daughters, go, for I am now too old to marry again. Even if I said, "I stil have a hope: I shalltake a husband this very night and shal bear more sons,"	12 Tornate indietro, figliuole, ed andate; io ormai son vecchia, e non più atta alle nozze; ma anche se potessi oggi concepire e partorir figli,
13 would you be prepared to wait for them until they were grown up? Would you refuse to marry for theirsake? No, daughters, I am bitterly sorry for your sakes that the hand of Yahweh should have been raised againstme.'	13 se voi doveste aspettare che crescessero e giungessero agli anni della pubertà, sareste diventate vecchie prima di sposarvi. Non fate così, figliuole; perchè la vostra angustia accresce la mia, e la mano del Signore mi si fa più grave».
14 They started weeping loudly al over again; Orpah then kissed her mother-in-law and went back to herpeople. But Ruth stayed with her.	14 Quelle, alzata la voce, di nuovo si misero a piangere. Orfa la baciò, e tornò indietro; Rut restò attaccata alla suocera.
15 Naomi then said, 'Look, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her god. Go home, too;fol ow your sister-in-law.'	15 E Noemi le disse: «Vedi, la tua cognata è ritornata al suo popolo ed a' suoi dèi; va' con lei».
16 But Ruth said, 'Do not press me to leave you and to stop going with you, for wherever you go, I shalgo, wherever you live, I shal live. Your people will be my people, and your God wil be my God.	16 Rispose: «Non mi contrariare, col voler che ti lasci, e me ne vada; per dovunque tu t'incammini, io verrò; dove tu prenderai dimora, dimorerò io pure; il tuo popolo sarà il popolo mio, e il tuo Dio sarà il Dio mio.
17 Where you die, I shall die and there I shal be buried. Let Yahweh bring unnameable il s on me andworse il s, too, if anything but death should part me from you!'	17 Nella terra che ti riceverà dopo morta, io pure morirò, ed ivi avrò la mia sepoltura. Mi mandi il Signore ogni male, se la morte soltanto non mi separerà da te».
18 Seeing that Ruth was determined to go with her, Naomi said no more.	18 Vedendo dunque Noemi che Rut era irremovibile nel proposito di partire con lei, non volle contrariarla, nè più oltre persuaderla a tornare a' suoi.
19 The two of them went on until they came to Bethlehem. Their arrival set the whole town astir, and thewomen said, 'Can this be Naomi?'	19 Partirono dunque insieme e vennero a Betleem. Entrate che furono in città, se ne sparse presto fra tutti la voce. E le donne dicevano: «Ecco quella Noemi!».
20 To this she replied, 'Do not cal me Naomi, cal me Mara, for Shaddai has made my lot bitter.	20 Ma essa diceva loro: «Non mi chiamate Noemi (cioè bella); chiamatemi Mara (cioè amara); perchè l'Onnipotente mi ha ripiena assai d'amarezza.
21 I departed ful , and Yahweh has brought me home empty. Why, then, call me Naomi, since Yahwehhas pronounced against me and Shaddai has made me wretched?'	21 Partii nell'abbondanza ed il Signore m'ha fatto ritornare nella miseria. Perchè dunque mi chiamate Noemi, me che il Signore ha umiliata, e l'Onnipotente ha afflitta?».
22 This was how Naomi came home with her daughter-in-law, Ruth the Moabitess, on returning from thePlains of Moab. They arrived in Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest.	22 Venne pertanto Noemi, con Rut Moabita sua nuora, dalla terra ove era stata come straniera, e fece ritorno in Betleem, quando si cominciava a mietere l'orzo.
