1 In the days when the Judges were governing, a famine occurred in the country and a certain man fromBethlehem of Judah went-he, his wife and his two sons -- to live in the Plains of Moab.	1 Au temps des Juges, un homme quitta Bethléem de Juda avec sa femme et ses deux fils pour s’installer dans les campagnes de Moab, car il y avait la famine dans le pays.
2 The man was called Elimelech, his wife Naomi and his two sons Mahlon and Chilion; they wereEphrathites from Bethlehem of Judah. Going to the Plains of Moab, they settled there.	2 Cet homme s’appelait Élimélek, sa femme se nommait Noémi, et ses deux fils Mahlon et Kilyon; ils étaient d’Éfrata de Bethléem, en Juda. Ils arrivèrent donc dans les campagnes de Moab et s’y installèrent.
3 Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died, and she and her two sons were left.	3 Élimélek, le mari de Noémi, mourut et elle resta là avec ses deux fils.
4 These married Moabite women: one was called Orpah and the other Ruth. They lived there for aboutten years.	4 Ceux-ci se marièrent avec des Moabites; l’une s’appelait Orpa et l’autre Ruth. Ils vécurent ainsi pendant près de 10 ans.
5 Mahlon and Chilion then both died too, and Naomi was thus bereft of her two sons and her husband.	5 Mahlon et Kilyon moururent à leur tour et la femme resta seule, sans fils et sans mari.
6 She then decided to come back from the Plains of Moab with her daughters-in-law, having heard in thePlains of Moab that God had visited his people and given them food.	6 Elle prit donc la décision, avec ses belles-filles, de revenir des campagnes de Moab, car elle avait appris que Yahvé avait visité son peuple et lui donnait du pain.
7 So, with her daughters-in-law, she left the place where she was living and they took the road back toJudah.	7 Elle quitta avec ses belles-filles le lieu où elle habitait, et se mit en route pour retourner au pays de Juda.
8 Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, 'Go back, each of you to your mother's house.	8 Noémi dit alors à ses belles-filles: “Allez, retournez chacune chez votre mère et que le Seigneur, dans sa bonté, vous récompense de la bonté que vous avez eue pour nos morts et pour moi-même.
9 May Yahweh show you faithful love, as you have done to those who have died and to me. Yahweh grantthat you may each find happiness with a husband!' She then kissed them, but they began weeping loudly,	9 Que Yahvé accorde à chacune d’entre vous de trouver un mari avec qui elle vivra en paix.” Mais tandis qu’elle les embrassait, elles lui répondirent tout en larmes:
10 and said, 'No, we shal go back with you to your people.'	10 “Non! Nous retournerons avec toi vers ton peuple!”
11 'Go home, daughters,' Naomi replied. 'Why come with me? Have I any more sons in my womb to makehusbands for you?	11 Noémi leur dit: “Repartez mes filles. Pourquoi venir avec moi? Est-ce que je peux encore avoir des fils qui deviendraient vos maris?
12 Go home, daughters, go, for I am now too old to marry again. Even if I said, "I stil have a hope: I shalltake a husband this very night and shal bear more sons,"	12 Allez, retournez, mes filles. Je suis trop vieille pour me remarier. Et même si je pensais qu’il me reste encore un espoir, si je me disais: Cette nuit je me donnerai à un homme et j’enfanterai encore des fils
13 would you be prepared to wait for them until they were grown up? Would you refuse to marry for theirsake? No, daughters, I am bitterly sorry for your sakes that the hand of Yahweh should have been raised againstme.'	13 auriez-vous la patience d’attendre qu’ils soient grands? Est-ce pour cela que vous renonceriez à vous remarier? Non mes filles, mon amertume est trop lourde à porter pour vous maintenant que la main de Yahvé m’a frappée.”
14 They started weeping loudly al over again; Orpah then kissed her mother-in-law and went back to herpeople. But Ruth stayed with her.	14 Alors elles poussèrent des cris et pleurèrent de nouveau; puis Orpa embrassa sa belle-mère et repartit vers son peuple, mais Ruth resta attachée à Noémi.
15 Naomi then said, 'Look, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her god. Go home, too;fol ow your sister-in-law.'	15 Celle-ci lui dit: “Regarde, ta belle-sœur est repartie vers son peuple et vers son Dieu. Toi aussi retourne, suis-la.”
16 But Ruth said, 'Do not press me to leave you and to stop going with you, for wherever you go, I shalgo, wherever you live, I shal live. Your people will be my people, and your God wil be my God.	16 Mais Ruth répondit: “N’insiste pas pour que je t’abandonne et que je m’éloigne de toi, car là où tu iras j’irai, là où tu resteras je resterai. Ton peuple sera mon peuple et ton Dieu sera mon Dieu.
17 Where you die, I shall die and there I shal be buried. Let Yahweh bring unnameable il s on me andworse il s, too, if anything but death should part me from you!'	17 Là où tu mourras je mourrai, et là je serai enterrée. Que Yahvé me maudisse et me maudisse encore si ce n’est pas la mort qui nous sépare.”
18 Seeing that Ruth was determined to go with her, Naomi said no more.	18 Noémi cessa d’insister auprès d’elle car elle voyait que Ruth était décidée à l’accompagner.
19 The two of them went on until they came to Bethlehem. Their arrival set the whole town astir, and thewomen said, 'Can this be Naomi?'	19 Elles partirent donc toutes les deux et arrivèrent à Bethléem. Toute la ville était retournée en les voyant arriver: “Est-ce bien Noémi?” s’écriaient les femmes.
20 To this she replied, 'Do not cal me Naomi, cal me Mara, for Shaddai has made my lot bitter.	20 “Ne m’appelez plus Noémi, répondit-elle, appelez-moi Mara, car le Dieu des Steppes m’a remplie d’amertume.
21 I departed ful , and Yahweh has brought me home empty. Why, then, call me Naomi, since Yahwehhas pronounced against me and Shaddai has made me wretched?'	21 J’étais partie comblée de richesses, et Yahvé me ramène les mains vides. Pourquoi m’appeler encore Noémi alors que Yahvé s’est dressé contre moi et que le Dieu des Steppes m’a rendue malheureuse?”
22 This was how Naomi came home with her daughter-in-law, Ruth the Moabitess, on returning from thePlains of Moab. They arrived in Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest.	22 C’est ainsi que Noémi revint, ayant avec elle Ruth la Moabite, sa belle-fille, qui arrivait des champs de Moab. Elles arrivèrent à Bethléem au début de la moisson des orges.
