NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Then, in my vision, I saw the Lamb break one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four livingcreatures shout in a voice like thunder, 'Come!'1 Et vidi quod aperuisset Agnus unum de septem sigillis, et audivi unum de quatuor animalibus, dicens tamquam vocem tonitrui : Veni, et vide.
Immediately I saw a white horse appear, and its rider was holding a bow; he was given a victor's crownand he went away, to go from victory to victory.2 Et vidi : et ecce equus albus, et qui sedebat super illum, habebat arcum, et data est ei corona, et exivit vincens ut vinceret.
When he broke the second seal, I heard the second living creature shout, 'Come!'3 Et cum aperuisset sigillum secundum, audivi secundum animal, dicens : Veni, et vide.
And out came another horse, bright red, and its rider was given this duty: to take away peace from theearth and set people kil ing each other. He was given a huge sword.4 Et exivit alius equus rufus : et qui sedebat super illum, datum est ei ut sumeret pacem de terra, et ut invicem se interficiant, et datus est ei gladius magnus.
When he broke the third seal, I heard the third living creature shout, 'Come!' Immediately I saw a blackhorse appear, and its rider was holding a pair of scales;5 Et cum aperuisset sigillum tertium, audivi tertium animal, dicens : Veni, et vide. Et ecce equus niger : et qui sedebat super illum, habebat stateram in manu sua.
and I seemed to hear a voice shout from among the four living creatures and say, 'A day's wages for aquart of corn, and a day's wages for three quarts of barley, but do not tamper with the oil or the wine.'6 Et audivi tamquam vocem in medio quatuor animalium dicentium : Bilibris tritici denario et tres bilibres hordei denario, et vinum, et oleum ne læseris.
When he broke the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature shout, 'Come!'7 Et cum aperuisset sigillum quartum, audivi vocem quarti animalis dicentis : Veni, et vide.
Immediately I saw another horse appear, deathly pale, and its rider was called Death, and Hadesfol owed at its heels. They were given authority over a quarter of the earth, to kil by the sword, by famine, byplague and through wild beasts.8 Et ecce equus pallidus : et qui sedebat super eum, nomen illi Mors, et infernus sequebatur eum, et data est illi potestas super quatuor partes terræ, interficere gladio, fame, et morte, et bestiis terræ.
When he broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of all the people who had been kil edon account of the Word of God, for witnessing to it.9 Et cum aperuisset sigillum quintum, vidi subtus altare animas interfectorum propter verbum Dei, et propter testimonium, quod habebant :
They shouted in a loud voice, 'Holy, true Master, how much longer wil you wait before you passsentence and take vengeance for our death on the inhabitants of the earth?'10 et clamabant voce magna, dicentes : Usquequo Domine (sanctus et verus), non judicas, et non vindicas sanguinem nostrum de iis qui habitant in terra ?
Each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to be patient a little longer, until the roll wascompleted of their fel ow-servants and brothers who were stil to be killed as they had been.11 Et datæ sunt illis singulæ stolæ albæ : et dictum est illis ut requiescerent adhuc tempus modicum donec compleantur conservi eorum, et fratres eorum, qui interficiendi sunt sicut et illi.
In my vision, when he broke the sixth seal, there was a violent earthquake and the sun went as blackas coarse sackcloth; the moon turned red as blood al over,12 Et vidi cum aperuisset sigillum sextum : et ecce terræmotus magnus factus est, et sol factus est niger tamquam saccus cilicinus : et luna tota facta est sicut sanguis :
and the stars of the sky fell onto the earth like figs dropping from a fig tree when a high wind shakes it;13 et stellæ de cælo ceciderunt super terram, sicut ficus emittit grossos suos cum a vento magno movetur :
the sky disappeared like a scroll rol ing up and al the mountains and islands were shaken from theirplaces.14 et cælum recessit sicut liber involutus : et omnis mons, et insulæ de locis suis motæ sunt :
Then al the kings of the earth, the governors and the commanders, the rich people and the men ofinfluence, the whole population, slaves and citizens, hid in caverns and among the rocks of the mountains.15 et reges terræ, et principes, et tribuni, et divites, et fortes, et omnis servus, et liber absconderunt se in speluncis, et in petris montium :
They said to the mountains and the rocks, 'Fal on us and hide us away from the One who sits on thethrone and from the retribution of the Lamb.16 et dicunt montibus, et petris : Cadite super nos, et abscondite nos a facie sedentis super thronum, et ab ira Agni :
For the Great Day of his retribution has come, and who can face it?'17 quoniam venit dies magnus iræ ipsorum : et quis poterit stare ?
