NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 The Angel of Yahweh went up from Gilgal to Bethel and said, 'I have brought you out of Egypt and ledyou into this country, which I promised on oath to your ancestors. I said, "I shal never break my covenant withyou.	1 Un messaggero del Signore salì da Gàlgala a Bochim e disse: "Io vi ho fatto uscire dall'Egitto e vi ho condotto nella terra che avevo promesso, con giuramento, ai vostri padri. Avevo detto che non avrei infranto il patto con voi in eterno,
2 You for your part must make no covenant with the inhabitants of this country; you wil destroy theiraltars." But you have not listened to my voice. What is the reason for this?	2 purché voi non faceste alcuna alleanza con gli abitanti di questa regione e purché distruggeste i loro altari. Voi invece non avete dato retta alle mie parole. Che è mai quello che avete fatto!
3 Very wel , I now say this, "I am not going to drive these nations out before you. They will become youroppressors, and their gods wil be a snare for you."	3 Ora io dico: non caccerò più queste genti davanti a voi, ed esse saranno vostre nemiche: i loro dèi saranno per voi causa di rovina".
4 When the angel of Yahweh had spoken these words to al the Israelites, the people began to wail at thetop of their voices.	4 Quando il messaggero del Signore ebbe terminato di dire queste parole a tutti gli Israeliti, il popolo alzò la sua voce in pianto.
5 And they called the place Bochim, and offered sacrifices to Yahweh there.	5 Per questo il luogo fu chiamato Bochim. Qui offrirono un sacrificio al Signore.
6 Joshua having dismissed the people, the Israelites then went away, each one to his own heritage, tooccupy the country.	6 Giosuè congedò il popolo e gli Israeliti se ne andarono ognuno alla sua terra per prendere possesso della regione.
7 The people served Yahweh throughout the lifetime of Joshua and throughout the lifetime of those elderswho outlived Joshua and had known al the great deeds which Yahweh had done for the sake of Israel.	7 Il popolo si mantenne fedele al Signore finché fu in vita Giosuè e finché lo furono gli anziani che a lui sopravvissero, i quali avevano veduto tutte le grandi opere che il Signore aveva compiuto per Israele.
8 Joshua son of Nun, servant of Yahweh, was a hundred and ten years old when he died.	8 Giosuè, figlio di Nun, servo del Signore, morì in età di centodieci anni
9 He was buried on the estate which he had received as his heritage at Timnath-Heres in the highlands ofEphraim, north of Mount Gaash.	9 e fu sepolto nella parte di territorio che gli era stata assegnata, a Timnat-Cheres, fra i monti di Efraim, a settentrione del monte Gaas.
10 And when that whole generation had been gathered to its ancestors, another generation fol owed itwhich knew neither Yahweh nor the deeds which he had done for the sake of Israel.	10 Allo stesso modo tutta quella generazione si riunì ai suoi padri e dopo di quella sorse un'altra generazione che non conosceva né il Signore né tutte le opere che egli aveva compiuto per Israele.
11 The Israelites then did what is evil in Yahweh's eyes and served the Baals.	11 Gli Israeliti facevano ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore e prestavano culto a Baal,
12 They deserted Yahweh, God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt, and they followedother gods, from those of the surrounding peoples. They bowed down to these; they provoked Yahweh;	12 abbandonando il Signore, Dio dei loro padri, che li aveva fatti uscire dalla terra di Egitto. Seguivano altri dèi fra quelli dei popoli che li circondavano. Li adoravano e provocavano lo sdegno del Signore.
13 they deserted Yahweh to serve Baal and Astartes.	13 Essi abbandonavano il Signore e prestavano culto a Baal e ad Astarte.
14 Then Yahweh's anger grew hot against Israel. He handed them over to pil agers who plundered them;he delivered them to the enemies surrounding them, and they were no longer able to resist their enemies.	14 Divampava così contro gli Israeliti lo sdegno del Signore, il quale li abbandonava nelle mani di predoni che li rapivano e li vendevano ai loro nemici all'intorno, senza che gli Israeliti potessero loro resistere.
15 Whenever they mounted an expedition, Yahweh's hand was there to foil them, as Yahweh had toldthem and as Yahweh had sworn to them, so that they were in dire distress.	15 Qualunque impresa essi tentassero, la mano del Signore si stendeva nemica contro di loro, conforme a quanto egli aveva detto e aveva loro giurato: così Israele cadeva in gravi oppressioni.
16 Yahweh then appointed them judges, who rescued them from the hands of their plunderers.	16 Ma allora il Signore suscitava dei giudici, perché liberassero gli Israeliti da coloro che li depredavano.
17 But even to their judges they refused to listen. They prostituted themselves to other gods and boweddown before these. Very quickly they left the path which their ancestors had trodden in obedience to the ordersof Yahweh; they did not fol ow their example.	17 Ma gli Israeliti non davano ascolto neanche ai loro giudici, ma si prostituivano con altri dèi adorandoli. Con grande facilità abbandonavano la via che avevano seguito i loro padri nell'obbedienza ai comandi del Signore: essi non agivano allo stesso modo.
18 When Yahweh appointed judges for them, Yahweh was with the judge and rescued them from thehands of their enemies as long as the judge lived, since Yahweh relented at their groans under their persecutorsand oppressors.	18 Quando il Signore suscitava dei giudici per gli Israeliti, egli proteggeva ciascun giudice il quale portava gli Israeliti alla vittoria contro i loro nemici per tutto il tempo che viveva; perché il Signore si muoveva a compassione dei gemiti degli Israeliti sotto l'oppressione di chi li perseguitava.
19 But once the judge was dead, they relapsed into even worse corruption than their ancestors. Theyfol owed other gods; they served them and bowed before them and would not give up the practices and stubbornways of their ancestors at al .	19 Ma alla morte del giudice essi tornavano a comportarsi anche peggio dei loro padri, seguendo altri dèi che veneravano e adoravano. Non recedevano dalle loro opere, dalla loro condotta perversa.
20 Yahweh's anger then blazed out against Israel, and he said, 'Since this people has broken thecovenant which I laid down for their ancestors, since they have not listened to my voice,	20 Divampava perciò di nuovo contro Israele l'ira del Signore, il quale diceva: "Poiché questo popolo ha trasgredito il patto che ho stretto coi loro padri e non dà ascolto alla mia voce,
21 in future I shal not drive before them any one of those nations which Joshua left when he died,	21 io non continuerò a cacciare davanti a lui nemmeno uno dei popoli che Giosuè ha lasciato alla sua morte;
22 in order, by means of them, to put Israel to the test, to see whether or not they would tread the paths ofYahweh as once their ancestors had trodden them.'	22 farò questo allo scopo di mettere gli Israeliti alla prova per mezzo di questi popoli, per vedere se essi osservano le vie del Signore come hanno fatto i loro padri, oppure no".
23 Hence, Yahweh allowed these nations to remain; he did not hurry to drive them out, and did not deliverthem into the hands of Joshua.	23 Per questo il Signore aveva lasciato quelle popolazioni senza cacciarle subito e non le aveva consegnate nelle mani di Giosuè.
