Here is a saying that you can rely on: to want to be a presiding elder is to desire a noble task.1 It is a faithful saying: if a man desires the episcopate, he desires a good work.
That is why the presiding elder must have an impeccable character. Husband of one wife, he must betemperate, discreet and courteous, hospitable and a good teacher;2 Therefore, it is necessary for a bishop to be beyond reproach, the husband of one wife, sober, prudent, gracious, chaste, hospitable, a teacher,
not a heavy drinker, nor hot-tempered, but gentle and peaceable, not avaricious,3 not a drunkard, not combative but restrained, not quarrelsome, not covetous;
a man who manages his own household wel and brings his children up to obey him and be wel -behaved:4 but a man who leads his own house well, having children who are subordinate with all chastity.
how can any man who does not understand how to manage his own household take care of the Churchof God?5 For if a man does not know how to lead his own house, how will he take care of the Church of God?
He should not be a new convert, in case pride should turn his head and he incur the samecondemnation as the devil.6 He must not be a new convert, lest, being elated by pride, he may fall under the sentence of the devil.
It is also necessary that he be held in good repute by outsiders, so that he never falls into disrepute andinto the devil's trap.7 And it is necessary for him also to have good testimony from those who are outside, so that he may not fall into disrepute and the snare of the devil.
Similarly, deacons must be respectable, not double-tongued, moderate in the amount of wine they drinkand with no squalid greed for money.8 Similarly, deacons must be chaste, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not pursuing tainted profit,
They must hold to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.9 holding to the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience.
They are first to be examined, and admitted to serve as deacons only if there is nothing against them.10 And these things should be proven first, and then they may minister, being without offense.
Similarly, women must be respectable, not gossips, but sober and whol y reliable.11 Similarly, the women must be chaste, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.
Deacons must be husbands of one wife and must be people who manage their children andhouseholds wel .12 Deacons should be the husband of one wife, men who lead their own children and their own houses well.
Those of them who carry out their duties wel as deacons wil earn a high standing for themselves andan authoritative voice in matters concerning faith in Christ Jesus.13 For those who have ministered well will acquire for themselves a good position, and much confidence in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
I write this to you in the hope that I may be able to come to you soon;14 I am writing these things to you, with the hope that I will come to you soon.
but in case I should be delayed, I want you to know how people ought to behave in God's household --that is, in the Church of the living God, pillar and support of the truth.15 But, if I am delayed, you should know the manner in which it is necessary to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the Church of the living God, the pillar and the foundation of truth.
Without any doubt, the mystery of our religion is very deep indeed: He was made visible in the flesh,justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed to the gentiles, believed in throughout the world, taken up inglory.16 And it is clearly great, this mystery of piety, which was manifested in the flesh, which was justified in the Spirit, which has appeared to Angels, which has been preached to the Gentiles, which is believed in the world, which has been taken up in glory.
