This wil be the third time I have confronted you. Whatever the misdemeanour, the evidence of two orthree witnesses is required to sustain a charge.1 Behold, this is the third time that I am coming to you. By the mouth of two or three witnesses, every word shall stand.
I gave you notice once, and now, though I am not with you, I give notice again, just as when I was withyou for a second time, to those who sinned before, and to all others; and it is to this effect, that when I do comenext time, I shal have no mercy.2 I have preached when present, and I will preach now while absent, to those who sinned before, and to all the others, because, when I arrive again, I will not be lenient with you.
Since you are asking for a proof that it is Christ who speaks in me; he is not weak with you but hispower is at work among you;3 Do you seek evidence that it is Christ who speaks in me, who is not weak with you, but is powerful with you?
for, though it was out of weakness that he was crucified, he is alive now with the power of God. We,too, are weak in him, but with regard to you we shal live with him by the power of God.4 For although he was crucified in weakness, yet he lives by the power of God. And yes, we are weak in him. But we shall live with him by the power of God among you.
Put yourselves to the test to make sure you are in the faith. Examine yourselves. Do you notrecognise yourselves as people in whom Jesus Christ is present? - unless, that is, you fail the test.5 Test yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Examine yourselves. Or do you yourselves not know whether Christ Jesus is in you? But perhaps you are reprobates.
But we, as I hope you wil come to recognise, do not fail the test.6 But I hope you know that we ourselves are not reprobates.
It is our prayer to God that you may do nothing wrong -- not so that we have the credit of passing atest, but because you wil be doing what is right, even if we do not pass the test.7 Now we pray to God that you shall do nothing evil, not so that we may seem to be approved, but so that you may do what is good, even if we seem like reprobates.
We have no power to resist the truth; only to further the truth;8 For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth.
and we are delighted to be weak if only you are strong. What we ask in our prayers is that you shouldbe made perfect.9 For we rejoice that we are weak, while you are strong. This is also what we pray for: your perfection.
That is why I am writing this while still far away, so that when I am with you I shal not have to beharsh, with the authority that the Lord has given me, an authority that is for building up and not for breakingdown.10 Therefore, I write these things while absent, so that, when present, I may not have to act more harshly, according to the authority which the Lord has given to me, for edification and not for destruction.
To end then, brothers, we wish you joy; try to grow perfect; encourage one another; have a commonmind and live in peace, and the God of love and peace wil be with you.11 As to the rest, brothers, rejoice, be perfect, be encouraged, have the same mind, have peace. And so the God of peace and love will be with you.
Greet one another with the holy kiss. Al God's holy people send you their greetings.12 Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints greet you.
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fel owship of the Holy Spirit be with youal .13 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the charity of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.
