Romans 7

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 As people who are familiar with the Law, brothers, you cannot have forgotten that the law can control aperson only during that person's lifetime.	1 Ou bien ignorez-vous, frères -- je parle à des experts en fait de loi -- que la loi ne s'impose àl'homme que durant sa vie?
2 A married woman, for instance, is bound to her husband by law, as long as he lives, but when herhusband dies all her legal obligation to him as husband is ended.	2 C'est ainsi que la femme mariée est liée par la loi au mari tant qu'il est vivant; mais si l'hommemeurt, elle se trouve dégagée de la loi du mari.
3 So if she were to have relations with another man while her husband was still alive, she would betermed an adulteress; but if her husband dies, her legal obligation comes to an end and if she then has relationswith another man, that does not make her an adulteress.	3 C'est donc du vivant de son mari qu'elle portera le nom d'adultère, si elle devient la femme d'unautre; mais en cas de mort du mari, elle est si bien affranchie de la loi qu'elle n'est pas adultère en devenant lafemme d'un autre.
4 In the same way you, my brothers, through the body of Christ have become dead to the Law and soyou are able to belong to someone else, that is, to him who was raised from the dead to make us live fruitful y for God.	4 Ainsi, mes frères, vous de même vous avez été mis à mort à l'égard de la Loi par le corps du Christpour appartenir à un autre, à Celui qui est ressuscité d'entre les morts, afin que nous fructifiions pour Dieu.
5 While we were stil living by our natural inclinations, the sinful passions aroused by the Law wereworking in al parts of our bodies to make us live lives which were fruitful only for death.	5 De fait, quand nous étions dans la chair, les passions pécheresses qui se servent de la Loi opéraienten nos membres afin que nous fructifiions pour la mort.
6 But now we are released from the Law, having died to what was binding us, and so we are in a newservice, that of the spirit, and not in the old service of a written code.	6 Mais à présent nous avons été dégagés de la Loi, étant morts à ce qui nous tenait prisonniers, demanière à servir dans la nouveauté de l'esprit et non plus dans la vétusté de la lettre.
7 What should we say, then? That the Law itself is sin? Out of the question! All the same, if it had notbeen for the Law, I should not have known what sin was; for instance, I should not have known what it meant tocovet if the Law had not said: You are not to covet.	7 Qu'est-ce à dire? Que la Loi est péché? Certes non! Seulement je n'ai connu le péché que par laLoi. Et, de fait, j'aurais ignoré la convoitise si la Loi n'avait dit: Tu ne convoiteras pas!
8 But, once it found the opportunity through that commandment, sin produced in me al kinds ofcovetousness; as long as there is no Law, sin is dead.	8 Mais, saisissant l'occasion, le péché par le moyen du précepte produisit en moi toute espèce deconvoitise: car sans la Loi le péché n'est qu'un mort.
9 Once, when there was no Law, I used to be alive; but when the commandment came, sin came to life	9 Ah! je vivais jadis sans la Loi; mais quand le précepte est survenu, le péché a pris vie
10 and I died. The commandment was meant to bring life but I found it brought death,	10 tandis que moi je suis mort, et il s'est trouvé que le précepte fait pour la vie me conduisit à lamort.
11 because sin, finding its opportunity by means of the commandment, beguiled me and, by means of it,kil ed me.	11 Car le péché saisit l'occasion et, utilisant le précepte, me séduisit et par son moyen me tua.
12 So then, the Law is holy, and what it commands is holy and upright and good.	12 La Loi, elle, est donc sainte, et saint le précepte, et juste et bon.
13 Does that mean that something good resulted in my dying? Out of the question! But sin, in order to beidentified as sin, caused my death through that good thing, and so it is by means of the commandment that sinshows its unbounded sinful power.	13 Une chose bonne serait-elle donc devenue mort pour moi? Certes non! Mais c'est le péché, lui,qui, afin de paraître péché, se servit d'une chose bonne pour me procurer la mort, afin que le péché exerçât toutesa puissance de péché par le moyen du précepte.
14 We are wel aware that the Law is spiritual: but I am a creature of flesh and blood sold as a slave tosin.	14 En effet, nous savons que la Loi est spirituelle; mais moi je suis un être de chair, vendu aupouvoir du péché.
15 I do not understand my own behaviour; I do not act as I mean to, but I do things that I hate.	15 Vraiment ce que je fais je ne le comprends pas: car je ne fais pas ce que je veux, mais je fais ceque je hais.
16 While I am acting as I do not want to, I still acknowledge the Law as good,	16 Or si je fais ce que je ne veux pas, je reconnais, d'accord avec la Loi, qu'elle est bonne;
17 so it is not myself acting, but the sin which lives in me.	17 en réalité ce n'est plus moi qui accomplis l'action, mais le péché qui habite en moi.
18 And really, I know of nothing good living in me -- in my natural self, that is -- for though the wil to dowhat is good is in me, the power to do it is not:	18 Car je sais que nul bien n'habite en moi, je veux dire dans ma chair; en effet, vouloir le bien est àma portée, mais non pas l'accomplir:
19 the good thing I want to do, I never do; the evil thing which I do not want -- that is what I do.	19 puisque je ne fais pas le bien que je veux et commets le mal que je ne veux pas.
20 But every time I do what I do not want to, then it is not myself acting, but the sin that lives in me.	20 Or si je fais ce que je ne veux pas, ce n'est plus moi qui accomplis l'action, mais le péché quihabite en moi.
21 So I find this rule: that for me, where I want to do nothing but good, evil is close at my side.	21 Je trouve donc une loi s'imposant à moi, quand je veux faire le bien; le mal seul se présente à moi.
22 In my inmost self I dearly love God's law,	22 Car je me complais dans la loi de Dieu du point de vue de l'homme intérieur;
23 but I see that acting on my body there is a different law which battles against the law in my mind. So Iam brought to be a prisoner of that law of sin which lives inside my body.	23 mais j'aperçois une autre loi dans mes membres qui lutte contre la loi de ma raison et m'enchaîneà la loi du péché qui est dans mes membres.
24 What a wretched man I am! Who wil rescue me from this body doomed to death?	24 Malheureux homme que je suis! Qui me délivrera de ce corps qui me voue à la mort?
25 God -- thanks be to him -- through Jesus Christ our Lord. So it is that I myself with my mind obey thelaw of God, but in my disordered nature I obey the law of sin.	25 Grâces soient à Dieu par Jésus Christ notre Seigneur! C'est donc bien moi qui par la raison sersune loi de Dieu et par la chair une loi de péché.
