1 As people who are familiar with the Law, brothers, you cannot have forgotten that the law can control aperson only during that person's lifetime.	1 Frères, je vous parle comme à des gens qui connaissent la Loi. Vous le savez, la Loi n’a pouvoir sur nous que pour la durée de notre vie.
2 A married woman, for instance, is bound to her husband by law, as long as he lives, but when herhusband dies all her legal obligation to him as husband is ended.	2 Ainsi la femme mariée n’est tenue par la Loi que si le mari est vivant; s’il meurt elle n’a plus d’obligation vis-à-vis de son mari.
3 So if she were to have relations with another man while her husband was still alive, she would betermed an adulteress; but if her husband dies, her legal obligation comes to an end and if she then has relationswith another man, that does not make her an adulteress.	3 Quand il vivait, c’était pour elle un adultère de se donner à un autre, mais lorsque le mari est mort, elle n’a plus d’obligation et ce ne sera pas un adultère de se donner à un autre homme.
4 In the same way you, my brothers, through the body of Christ have become dead to the Law and soyou are able to belong to someone else, that is, to him who was raised from the dead to make us live fruitful y for God.	4 Donc, frères, vous êtes morts à la Loi dans et avec le corps du Christ, pour appartenir à un autre, celui qui est ressuscité d’entre les morts pour que nous donnions des fruits pour Dieu.
5 While we were stil living by our natural inclinations, the sinful passions aroused by the Law wereworking in al parts of our bodies to make us live lives which were fruitful only for death.	5 Quand nous étions au niveau de la chair, la Loi excitait les désirs de tout ce qui est péché, et ils agissaient en nos membres pour porter des fruits de mort.
6 But now we are released from the Law, having died to what was binding us, and so we are in a newservice, that of the spirit, and not in the old service of a written code.	6 Mais maintenant, nous sommes morts vis-à-vis de tout ce qui nous tenait captifs, et la Loi ne vaut plus pour nous. Nous ne sommes donc plus au service d’une Loi écrite, ce qui était le passé: avec l’Esprit nous sommes dans le neuf.
7 What should we say, then? That the Law itself is sin? Out of the question! All the same, if it had notbeen for the Law, I should not have known what sin was; for instance, I should not have known what it meant tocovet if the Law had not said: You are not to covet.	7 Qu’est-ce que cela signifie? Que la Loi est péché? Bien sûr que non. Mais sans la Loi je ne connaîtrais pas le péché. Voyez: je n’aurais pas conscience du désir sans la Loi qui dit: Tu ne désireras pas.
8 But, once it found the opportunity through that commandment, sin produced in me al kinds ofcovetousness; as long as there is no Law, sin is dead.	8 Le péché a trouvé là son occasion, et il s’est servi du commandement pour faire naître en moi tous les désirs, car sans la Loi le péché est mort.
9 Once, when there was no Law, I used to be alive; but when the commandment came, sin came to life	9 Au départ, il n’y avait pas de Loi et je vivais. Mais le commandement arrive et il donne vie au péché,
10 and I died. The commandment was meant to bring life but I found it brought death,	10 et pour moi c’est la mort. Oui, le commandement donné pour la vie m’a apporté la mort.
11 because sin, finding its opportunity by means of the commandment, beguiled me and, by means of it,kil ed me.	11 Le péché m’a aveuglé et il a saisi l’occasion du commandement pour me donner la mort.
12 So then, the Law is holy, and what it commands is holy and upright and good.	12 Mais la Loi elle-même est sainte et le commandement est saint et juste et bon.
13 Does that mean that something good resulted in my dying? Out of the question! But sin, in order to beidentified as sin, caused my death through that good thing, and so it is by means of the commandment that sinshows its unbounded sinful power.	13 Est-il possible que quelque chose de bon me mène à la mort? Bien sûr que non, cela vient du péché, et on voit mieux encore ce qu’est le péché quand il se sert de quelque chose de bon pour me donner la mort. Avec le commandement, le péché dévoile tout ce qu’il porte en lui.
14 We are wel aware that the Law is spiritual: but I am a creature of flesh and blood sold as a slave tosin.	14 Nous savons que la Loi est spirituelle, mais moi, je suis un homme de chair et vendu au péché.
15 I do not understand my own behaviour; I do not act as I mean to, but I do things that I hate.	15 Je ne comprends pas mes propres actes: je ne fais pas ce que je voudrais, et je fais ce que je déteste.
16 While I am acting as I do not want to, I still acknowledge the Law as good,	16 Donc, si je fais ce que je ne voudrais pas, je reconnais que la Loi est bonne.
17 so it is not myself acting, but the sin which lives in me.	17 Ce n’est pas moi qui le fais, mais le péché qui habite en moi.
18 And really, I know of nothing good living in me -- in my natural self, that is -- for though the wil to dowhat is good is in me, the power to do it is not:	18 Je sais que le bien n’habite pas en moi, je veux dire dans ma chair. Oui, je peux vouloir le bien, mais je suis incapable de le faire.
19 the good thing I want to do, I never do; the evil thing which I do not want -- that is what I do.	19 Je ne fais pas le bien que je voudrais et je fais le mal que je ne voudrais pas.
20 But every time I do what I do not want to, then it is not myself acting, but the sin that lives in me.	20 Mais alors, si je fais ce que je ne voudrais pas, ce n’est plus mon œuvre, mais l’œuvre du péché qui habite en moi.
21 So I find this rule: that for me, where I want to do nothing but good, evil is close at my side.	21 Me voilà donc devant une loi: quand je voudrais faire le bien, c’est le mal qui arrive.
22 In my inmost self I dearly love God's law,	22 Oui, l’homme intérieur en moi se sent en accord avec la loi de Dieu,
23 but I see that acting on my body there is a different law which battles against the law in my mind. So Iam brought to be a prisoner of that law of sin which lives inside my body.	23 mais je vois dans mes membres une autre loi qui lutte contre la loi de mon esprit, et je tombe prisonnier de cette loi du péché qui est dans mes membres.
24 What a wretched man I am! Who wil rescue me from this body doomed to death?	24 Quel triste sort! Qui me délivrera de ce corps vendu à la mort?
25 God -- thanks be to him -- through Jesus Christ our Lord. So it is that I myself with my mind obey thelaw of God, but in my disordered nature I obey the law of sin.	25 Grâces soient rendues à Dieu par Jésus Christ, notre Seigneur! En résumé, par ma conscience je suis soumis à la loi de Dieu, mais par la chair je suis esclave de la loi du péché.
