NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Once we had come safely through, we discovered that the island was cal ed Malta.	1 Cuando estuvimos a salvo, nos enteramos de que la misma se llamaba Malta. 2 Sus habitantes nos demostraron una cordialidad nada común y nos recibieron a todos alrededor de un gran fuego que habían encendido a causa de la lluvia y del frío.
2 The inhabitants treated us with unusual kindness. They made us all welcome by lighting a huge firebecause it had started to rain and the weather was cold.
3 Paul had collected a bundle of sticks and was putting them on the fire when a viper brought out by theheat attached itself to his hand.	3 Pablo recogió unas ramas secas y las echó al fuego. El calor hizo salir una serpiente que se enroscó en su mano.
4 When the inhabitants saw the creature hanging from his hand they said to one another, 'That manmust be a murderer; he may have escaped the sea, but divine justice would not let him live.'	4 Cuando los habitantes del lugar vieron el reptil enroscado en su mano, comenzaron a decir entre sí: «Este hombre es seguramente un asesino: se ha salvado del mar, y ahora la justicia divina no le permite sobrevivir».
5 However, he shook the creature off into the fire and came to no harm,	5 Pero él tiró la serpiente al fuego y no sufrió ningún mal.
6 although they were expecting him at any moment to swell up or drop dead on the spot. After they hadwaited a long time without seeing anything out of the ordinary happen to him, they changed their minds andbegan to say he was a god.	6 Ellos esperaban que se hinchara o cayera muerto. 7 In that neighbourhood there were estates belonging to the chief man of the island, whose name wasPublius. He received us and entertained us hospitably for three days.	7 Había en los alrededores una propiedad perteneciente al principal de la isla, llamado Publio. Este nos recibió y nos brindó cordial hospitalidad durante tres días.
8 It happened that Publius' father was in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to seehim, and after a prayer he laid his hands on the man and healed him.	8 El padre de Publio estaba en cama con fiebre y disentería. Pablo fue a verlo, oró, le impuso las manos y lo curó.
9 When this happened, the other sick people on the island also came and were cured;	9 A raíz de esto, se presentaron los otros enfermos de la isla y fueron curados.
10 they honoured us with many marks of respect, and when we sailed they put on board the provisionswe needed.	10 Nos colmaron luego de toda clase de atenciones y cuando nos embarcamos, nos proveyeron de lo necesario.
11 At the end of three months we set sail in a ship that had wintered in the island; she came fromAlexandria and her figurehead was the Twins.	11 Al cabo de tres meses nos embarcamos en un navío que había permanecido en la isla durante el invierno; era un barco alejandrino que tenía la insignia de Cástor y Pólux.
12 We put in at Syracuse and spent three days there;	12 Hicimos escala en Siracusa, donde permanecimos tres días.
13 from there we followed the coast up to Rhegium. After one day there a south wind sprang up and onthe second day we made Puteoli,	13 De allí, bordeando la costa llegamos a Regio. Al día siguiente, se levantó un viento del sur, y en dos días llegamos a Pozzuoli,
14 where we found some brothers and had the great encouragement of staying a week with them. Andso we came to Rome.	14 donde encontramos a unos hermanos que nos invitaron a permanecer una semana con ellos. Luego llegamos a Roma.
15 When the brothers there heard about us they came to meet us, as far as the Forum of Appius and theThree Taverns. When Paul saw them he thanked God and took courage.	15 Los hermanos de esta ciudad, informamos de nuestra llegada, nos salieron al encuentro y nos alcanzaron a la altura del «Foro de Apio» y en las «Tres Tabernas». Pablo, al verlos, dio gracias a Dios y se sintió reconfortado.
16 On our arrival in Rome Paul was al owed to stay in lodgings of his own with the soldier who guardedhim.	16 Cuando llegamos a Roma, recibió autorización para alojarse en una casa particular con un soldado que lo custodiara.
17 After three days he cal ed together the leading Jews. When they had assembled, he said to them,'Brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our ancestors, I was arrested inJerusalem and handed over to the Romans.	17 Tres días después convocó a los judíos principales, y cuando se reunieron les dijo: «Hermanos, sin haber hecho nada contra el pueblo ni contra las costumbres de nuestros padres, fui arrestado en Jerusalén y puesto en manos de los romanos.
18 They examined me and would have set me free, since they found me guilty of nothing involving thedeath penalty;	18 Después de interrogarme, quisieron dejarme en libertad, porque no encontraban en mí nada que mereciera la muerte;
19 but the Jews lodged an objection, and I was forced to appeal to Caesar, though not because I hadany accusation to make against my own nation.	19 pero ante la oposición de los judíos, me vi obligado a apelar al Emperador, sin querer por esto acusar en nada a mi pueblo.
20 That is why I have urged you to see me and have a discussion with me, for it is on account of thehope of Israel that I wear this chain.'	20 Por eso he querido verlos y hablarles, ya que a causa de la esperanza de Israel llevo estas cadenas».
21 They answered, 'We have received no letters from Judaea about you, nor has any of the brothersarrived here with any report or story of anything to your discredit.	21 Ellos le respondieron: «Nosotros no hemos recibido de Judea ninguna carta referente a ti, y ninguno de los hermanos que vinieron nos han contado nada que te sea desfavorable.
22 We think it would be as wel to hear your own account of your position; al we know about this sect isthat it encounters opposition everywhere.'	22 Pero ahora quisiéramos oírte exponer lo que piensas, porque sabemos que esta secta encuentra oposición en todas partes».
23 So they arranged a day with him and a large number of them visited him at his lodgings. He put hiscase to them, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to persuade them about Jesus, arguing from the Law ofMoses and the prophets from early morning until evening;	23 Entonces fijaron un día para encontrarse con él, y fueron a verlo en mayor número al lugar donde se alojaba. Pablo les habló durante todo el día sobre el Reino de Dios, dándoles toda clase de testimonio y tratando de persuadirlos para que creyeran en Jesucristo, a partir de la Ley de Moisés y de los Profetas.
24 and some were convinced by what he said, while the rest were sceptical.	24 Unos se convencían con sus palabras, pero otros se resistían a creer,
25 So they disagreed among themselves and, as they went away, Paul had one last thing to say to them,'How aptly the Holy Spirit spoke when he told your ancestors through the prophet Isaiah:	25 y mientras ellos se retiraban sin haberse puesto de acuerdo, Pablo dijo esta sola frase: «Son muy ciertas las palabras que el Espíritu Santo dijo a los padres de ustedes, por medio del profeta Isaías:
26 Go and say to this people: Listen and listen but never understand! Look and look but never perceive!	26 "Ve a decir a este pueblo: Por más que oigan no comprenderán, por más que vean, no conocerán,
27 This people's heart is torpid, their ears dul ed, they have shut their eyes tight, to avoid using their eyesto see, their ears to hear, using their heart to understand, changing their ways and being healed by me.	27 Porque el corazón de este pueblo se ha endurecido, se taparon los oídos y cerraron los ojos, por temor de que sus ojos vean, que sus oídos oigan, que su corazón comprenda, que se conviertan, y que yo los cure".
28 'You must realise, then, that this salvation of God has been sent to the gentiles;they wil listen to it.'	28 Sepan entonces que esa salvación de Dios va a ser anunciada a los paganos. Ellos sí que la escucharán».
29	29 [Al oír estas palabras los judíos se retiraron discutiendo acaloradamente.]
30 He spent the whole of the two years in his own rented lodging. He welcomed all who came to visithim,	30 Pablo vivió dos años enteros por sus propios medios, recibiendo a todos los que querían verlo,
31 proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching the truth about the Lord Jesus Christ with completefearlessness and without any hindrance from anyone.	31 proclamando el Reino de Dios, y enseñando con toda libertad y sin encontrar ningún obstáculo, lo concerniente al Señor Jesucristo.
