NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 Once we had come safely through, we discovered that the island was cal ed Malta.	1 Nous étions donc sauvés. C’est alors que nous avons su que l’île s’appelait Malte.
2 The inhabitants treated us with unusual kindness. They made us all welcome by lighting a huge firebecause it had started to rain and the weather was cold.	2 Les indigènes nous ont accueillis avec une cordialité peu courante. Ils ont allumé un feu et on s’est occupé de nous, car maintenant la pluie tombait, et il faisait froid.
3 Paul had collected a bundle of sticks and was putting them on the fire when a viper brought out by theheat attached itself to his hand.	3 Paul avait ramassé une brassée de bois sec. Au moment où il l’a jetée dans le feu, la chaleur en a fait sortir une vipère qui est restée accrochée à sa main.
4 When the inhabitants saw the creature hanging from his hand they said to one another, 'That manmust be a murderer; he may have escaped the sea, but divine justice would not let him live.'	4 Voyant la vipère qui pendait de sa main, les indigènes se sont dit: "Celui-là est sûrement un meurtrier: il a eu beau échapper à la mer, la Justice ne lui permet pas de vivre.”
5 However, he shook the creature off into the fire and came to no harm,	5 Mais Paul a secoué la bête dans le brasier et lui n’a eu aucun mal.
6 although they were expecting him at any moment to swell up or drop dead on the spot. After they hadwaited a long time without seeing anything out of the ordinary happen to him, they changed their minds andbegan to say he was a god.	6 Les autres s’attendaient à le voir enfler et tomber mort subitement, mais le temps passait et rien d’anormal ne lui arrivait. En voyant cela, ils ont changé d’avis et ils ont commencé à dire que c’était un dieu.
7 In that neighbourhood there were estates belonging to the chief man of the island, whose name wasPublius. He received us and entertained us hospitably for three days.	7 Les terres près de là appartenaient au premier personnage de l’île: il s’appelait Publius. Il nous a accueillis et nous a offert très aimablement l’hospitalité durant trois jours.
8 It happened that Publius' father was in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to seehim, and after a prayer he laid his hands on the man and healed him.	8 Le père de Publius était retenu au lit par une dysenterie et il avait de la fièvre. Paul est allé le voir; il a prié et lui a fait l’imposition des mains, et il l’a guéri.
9 When this happened, the other sick people on the island also came and were cured;	9 Du coup tous les autres de l’île qui avaient des malades se sont présentés et ils ont été rétablis.
10 they honoured us with many marks of respect, and when we sailed they put on board the provisionswe needed.	10 Ils nous ont donc montré beaucoup d’égards, et quand nous sommes repartis, ils nous ont pourvus de tout le nécessaire.
11 At the end of three months we set sail in a ship that had wintered in the island; she came fromAlexandria and her figurehead was the Twins.	11 Trois mois plus tard, nous partions sur un bateau d’Alexandrie qui avait passé l’hiver dans l’île; il portait le pavillon des Dioscures.
12 We put in at Syracuse and spent three days there;	12 Nous avons mis à la voile sur Syracuse où nous sommes restés trois jours.
13 from there we followed the coast up to Rhegium. After one day there a south wind sprang up and onthe second day we made Puteoli,	13 De là, longeant la côte, nous avons atteint Reggio. Le jour suivant le vent du sud est arrivé et deux jours plus tard nous étions à Potioles.
14 where we found some brothers and had the great encouragement of staying a week with them. Andso we came to Rome.	14 Là nous avons trouvé les frères, qui ont insisté pour que nous nous arrêtions chez eux huit jours. Et ainsi nous avons atteint Rome.
15 When the brothers there heard about us they came to meet us, as far as the Forum of Appius and theThree Taverns. When Paul saw them he thanked God and took courage.	15 Les frères y avaient reçu de nos nouvelles et ils sont venus jusqu’au Forum d’Appius, aux Trois-Tavernes, pour nous rencontrer. En les voyant, Paul a rendu grâces à Dieu et s’est senti réconforté.
16 On our arrival in Rome Paul was al owed to stay in lodgings of his own with the soldier who guardedhim.	16 Quand nous sommes entrés dans Rome, le centurion a remis les prisonniers au gouverneur militaire, mais Paul a eu l’autorisation de se loger à ses frais, avec le soldat qui le gardait.
17 After three days he cal ed together the leading Jews. When they had assembled, he said to them,'Brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our ancestors, I was arrested inJerusalem and handed over to the Romans.	17 Trois jours plus tard Paul convoquait les plus importants des Juifs. Quand ils furent chez lui, il commença à leur dire: "Frères, on m’a amené de Jérusalem comme prisonnier; j’ai été livré aux Romains alors que je n’avais offensé en rien les autorités de notre peuple ou les coutumes de nos pères.
18 They examined me and would have set me free, since they found me guilty of nothing involving thedeath penalty;	18 Après examen, les Romains voulaient me relâcher, vu qu’il n’y avait rien dans mon cas qui mérite la mort.
19 but the Jews lodged an objection, and I was forced to appeal to Caesar, though not because I hadany accusation to make against my own nation.	19 Mais devant l’opposition des Juifs, j’ai été forcé d’en appeler à César, sans avoir pourtant la moindre intention d’accuser les autorités de mon peuple.
20 That is why I have urged you to see me and have a discussion with me, for it is on account of thehope of Israel that I wear this chain.'	20 Voilà pourquoi j’ai demandé à vous voir et à vous parler. Si je porte cette chaîne, c’est à cause de l’espérance d’Israël.”
21 They answered, 'We have received no letters from Judaea about you, nor has any of the brothersarrived here with any report or story of anything to your discredit.	21 Ils lui dirent: "Nous n’avons pas reçu de lettres de Judée à ton sujet, et aucun des frères qui sont passés ne nous a dit ou transmis quelque chose de défavorable à ton sujet.
22 We think it would be as wel to hear your own account of your position; al we know about this sect isthat it encounters opposition everywhere.'	22 Mais nous aimerions entendre de toi comment tu te situes, car nous savons que cette secte rencontre partout de l’opposition.
23 So they arranged a day with him and a large number of them visited him at his lodgings. He put hiscase to them, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to persuade them about Jesus, arguing from the Law ofMoses and the prophets from early morning until evening;	23 Ils fixèrent avec lui un rendez-vous, et un bon nombre d’entre eux vinrent à son logement. Il leur fit tout un exposé: depuis le matin jusqu’au soir il leur parla du royaume de Dieu, partant de la loi de Moïse et des Prophètes, pour les convaincre au sujet de Jésus.
24 and some were convinced by what he said, while the rest were sceptical.	24 Certains se laissaient persuader par ses raisons, les autres refusaient de croire.
25 So they disagreed among themselves and, as they went away, Paul had one last thing to say to them,'How aptly the Holy Spirit spoke when he told your ancestors through the prophet Isaiah:	25 Ils n’étaient pas d’accord entre eux quand ils se retirèrent, et Paul leur dit ces mots: "L’Esprit Saint a dit vrai quand il parlait par le prophète Isaïe au sujet de vos pères:
26 Go and say to this people: Listen and listen but never understand! Look and look but never perceive!	26 Va vers ce peuple et dis-leur: Vous aurez beau écouter, vous ne comprendrez rien; vous aurez beau regarder, vous ne verrez pas.
27 This people's heart is torpid, their ears dul ed, they have shut their eyes tight, to avoid using their eyesto see, their ears to hear, using their heart to understand, changing their ways and being healed by me.	27 Oui, ce peuple a la conscience endurcie; leurs oreilles ne savent plus entendre, et leurs yeux sont bouchés. Ils ont peur de voir de leurs yeux et d’entendre de leurs oreilles, mais alors leur cœur comprendrait et se convertirait, et moi je les guérirais.
28 'You must realise, then, that this salvation of God has been sent to the gentiles;they wil listen to it.'	28 Sachez que déjà, ce salut de Dieu a été annoncé aux païens: eux l’écouteront.”

30 He spent the whole of the two years in his own rented lodging. He welcomed all who came to visithim,	30 Paul, donc, avait ce logement particulier qu’il louait; il y resta deux années entières. Il y recevait tous ceux qui venaient le voir;
31 proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching the truth about the Lord Jesus Christ with completefearlessness and without any hindrance from anyone.	31 il leur faisait l’annonce du Royaume de Dieu et leur enseignait avec beaucoup d’assurance tout ce qui a trait au Christ Jésus, le Seigneur, et personne ne l’en empêchait.
