1 Paul looked steadily at the Sanhedrin and began to speak, 'My brothers, to this day I have conductedmyself before God with a perfectly clear conscience.'	1 Allora Paolo, fissato lo sguardo sul Sinedrio, disse: Fratelli miei, io son vissuto in tutta buona coscienza dinanzi a Dio fino a questo giorno.
2 At this the high priest Ananias ordered his attendants to strike him on the mouth.	2 Ma il sommo sacerdote Anania comandò ai circostanti che lo percuotessero nella bocca.
3 Then Paul said to him, 'God wil surely strike you, you whitewashed wal ! How can you sit there tojudge me according to the Law, and then break the Law by ordering a man to strike me?'	3 Allora Paolo gli disse: Dio percuoterà te, muraglia imbiancata. Tu che siedi a giudicarmi secondo la legge, contro la legge ordini che io sia percosso.
4 The attendants said, 'Are you insulting the high priest of God?	4 Ma i circostanti dissero: Tu oltraggi il sommo sacerdote di Dio.
5 Paul answered, 'Brothers, I did not realise it was the high priest; certainly scripture says, "You wil notcurse your people's leader." '	5 E Paolo disse: Fratelli, io non sapeva essere lui il sommo sacerdote; poiché sta scritto: Non oltraggerai il principe del tuo popolo.
6 Now Paul was wel aware that one party was made up of Sadducees and the other of Pharisees, so hecal ed out in the Sanhedrin, 'Brothers, I am a Pharisee and the son of Pharisees. It is for our hope in theresurrection of the dead that I am on trial.'	6 Or Paolo, sapendo come una parte erano Sadducei e altra Farisei, disse ad alta voce nel concilio: Fratelli, sono fariseo, figlio di farisei e son chiamato in giudizio a cagione della speranza nella risurrezione dei morti.
7 As soon as he said this, a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the assemblywas split between the two parties.	7 Come ebbe detto questo, nacque disparere tra i Farisei e i Sadducei e l'assemblea fu divisa.
8 For the Sadducees say there is neither resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit, while the Pharisees accept allthree.	8 I Sadducei infatti negavano esserci risurrezione, angeli e spiriti; i Farisei invece sostenevano le due cose.
9 The shouting grew louder, and some of the scribes from the Pharisees' party stood up and protestedstrongly, 'We find nothing wrong with this man. Suppose a spirit has spoken to him, or an angel?'	9 E vi furono clamori grandi. E alzatisi, alcuni dei Farisei contendevano dicendo: Non troviamo alcun male in quest'uomo, chi sa se uno spirito o un Angelo gli abbia parlato?
10 Feeling was running high, and the tribune, afraid that they would tear Paul to pieces, ordered histroops to go down and haul him out and bring him into the fortress.	10 E, sortane una gran discussione, il tribuno, temendo che Paolo fosse fatto da loro a pezzi, ordinò ai soldati di scendere, toglierlo di mezzo a loro e condurlo in fortezza.
11 Next night, the Lord appeared to him and said, 'Courage! You have borne witness for me inJerusalem, now you must do the same in Rome.'	11 La notte seguente il Signore gli apparve e gli disse: Fatti animo, chè come mi hai reso testimonianza in Gerusalemme, cosi è necessario che tu me la renda anche a Roma.
12 When it was day, the Jews held a secret meeting at which they made a vow not to eat or drink untilthey had kil ed Paul.	12 E, fattosi giorno, si unirono alcuni dei Giudei e s'impegnarono con giuramento a non mangiare e non bere, finché non avessero ucciso Paolo.
13 More than forty of them entered this pact,	13 Quelli che avevan fatta questa congiura eran più di quaranta
14 and they went to the chief priests and elders and told them, 'We have made a solemn vow to letnothing pass our lips until we have killed Paul.	14 e andarono dai principi dei sacerdoti e dagli anziani a dire: Ci siamo obbligati con giuramento a non prendere cibo, finché non abbiamo ucciso Paolo.
15 Now it is up to you and the Sanhedrin together to apply to the tribune to bring him down to you, asthough you meant to examine his case more closely; we, on our side, are prepared to dispose of him before hereaches you.'	15 Or dunque col Sinedrio fate sapere al tribuno di condurlo alla vostra presenta, come se voleste scoprir qualche cosa di più sicuro intorno a lui; e noi siamo pronti ad ucciderlo prima che lui si accosti.
16 But the son of Paul's sister heard of the ambush they were laying and made his way into the fortressand told Paul,	16 Ma un figliolo della sorella di Paolo, avendo avuta notizia di queste insidie, andò alla fortezza e lo palesò a Paolo.
17 who cal ed one of the centurions and said, 'Take this young man to the tribune; he has something totel him.'	17 E Paolo, chiamato a sé uno dei centurioni, disse: Conduci cotesto giovanetto al tribuno, perchè ha qualche cosa da fargli sapere.
18 So the man took him to the tribune, and reported, 'The prisoner Paul summoned me and requestedme to bring this young man to you; he has something to tel you.'	18 Quello poi lo prese e lo condusse al tribuno e disse: Quel Paolo che è in catene m'ha pregato di condurre a te questo giovane che ha qualche cosa da dirti.
19 Then the tribune took him by the hand and drew him aside and questioned him in private, 'What is ityou have to tel me?'	19 E il tribuno, presolo per mano, si ritrasse con lui in disparte e gli domandò: Che è quello che tu hai da farmi sapere?
20 He replied, 'The Jews have made a plan to ask you to take Paul down to the Sanhedrin tomorrow, asthough they meant to enquire more closely into his case.	20 E quello disse: I Giudei si sono accordati per pregarti di condurre domani Paolo al Sinedrio, come se volessero esaminarlo più minutamente;
21 Do not believe them. There are more than forty of them lying in wait for him, and they have vowed notto eat or drink until they have got rid of him. They are ready now and only waiting for your order to be given.'	21 ma tu non dare retta ad essi; perchè più di quaranta uomini dei loro gli tendono insidie ed hanno promesso con giuramento di non mangiare nè bere, finché non lo abbiano ammazzato: ed ora stali pronti aspettando il tuo consenso.
22 The tribune let the young man go with this order, 'Tell no one that you have given me this information.'	22 Il tribuno allora rimandò il giovanetto ordinandogli di non dire ad alcuno di avergli palesate tali cose.
23 Then he summoned two of the centurions and said, 'Get two hundred soldiers ready to leave forCaesarea by the third hour of the night with seventy cavalry and two hundred auxiliaries;	23 E chiamati due centurioni, disse loro: Per la terza ora della notte tenete pronti duecento soldati che vadano fino a Cesarea, e settanta cavalieri e duecento lance;
24 provide horses for Paul, and deliver him unharmed to Felix the governor.'	24 preparate delle cavalcature sulle quali conducano salvo Paolo al preside Felice.
25 He also wrote a letter in these terms:	25 Egli infatti ebbe paura che i Giudei lo rapissero e lo uccidessero e poi lui fosse calunniato, come se avesse tirato al danaro.
26 'Claudius Lysias to his Excel ency the governor Felix, greetings.	26 Scrisse inoltre la seguente lettera: « Claudio Lisia all'eccellentissimo governatore Felice, salute.
27 This man had been seized by the Jews and would have been murdered by them; but I came on thescene with my troops and got him away, having discovered that he was a Roman citizen.	27 Questo uomo, preso dai Giudei e vicino ad essere ucciso, io, sopragginnto coi soldati, lo liberai, avendo inteso come egli era romano.
28 Wanting to find out what charge they were making against him, I brought him before their Sanhedrin.	28 Volendo poi sapere di qual delitto lo accusassero, lo menai al loro Sinedrio;
29 I found that the accusation concerned disputed points of their Law, but that there was no chargedeserving death or imprisonment.	29 ma trovai che era accusato per questioni della loro legge, senza però avere colpa degna di morte o di catene.
30 Acting on information that there was a conspiracy against the man, I hasten to send him to you, and have notified his accusers that they must state their case against him in your presence.'	30 Ma essendo poi informato che si ordiscono delle congiure contro di ini, l'ho mandato, avvisando anche gli accusatori che si rivolgano a te. Stai sano ».
31 The soldiers carried out their orders; they took Paul and escorted him by night to Antipatris.	31 I soldati allora, secondo Forcine dato loro, presero Paolo con loro e la notte lo condussero ad Antipatride.
32 Next day they left the mounted escort to go on with him and returned to the fortress.	32 Il giorno seguente lasciando che andassero con lui i cavalieri, tornarono alla fortezza.
33 On arriving at Caesarea the escort delivered the letter to the governor and handed Paul over to him.	33 E quelli, entrati in Cesarea e data la lettera al preside, gli presentarono anche Paolo.
34 When he had read it, he asked Paul what province he came from. Learning that he was from Ciliciahe said,	34 Avendola letta, il preside chiese a Paolo di che paese fosse, e sentito che era di Cilicia, disse:
35 'I wil hear your case as soon as your accusers are here too.' Then he ordered him to be held inHerod's praetorium.	35 T'ascolterò, arrivati che siano i tuoi accusatori. E ordinò che fosse custodito nel pretorio di Erode.
