NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Paul looked steadily at the Sanhedrin and began to speak, 'My brothers, to this day I have conductedmyself before God with a perfectly clear conscience.'	1 Con los ojos fijos en el Sanedrín, Pablo dijo: «Hermanos, hasta hoy yo he obrado con rectitud de conciencia delante de Dios».
2 At this the high priest Ananias ordered his attendants to strike him on the mouth.	2 Pero el Sumo Sacerdote Ananías ordenó a sus asistentes que le pegaran en la boca.
3 Then Paul said to him, 'God wil surely strike you, you whitewashed wal ! How can you sit there tojudge me according to the Law, and then break the Law by ordering a man to strike me?'	3 Entonces Pablo replicó: «A ti te golpeará Dios, hipócrita. ¡Tú te sientas allí para juzgarme según la Ley y, violando la Ley, me haces golpear!».
4 The attendants said, 'Are you insulting the high priest of God?	4 Los asistentes le advirtieron: «Estás insultando al Sumo Sacerdote de Dios».
5 Paul answered, 'Brothers, I did not realise it was the high priest; certainly scripture says, "You wil notcurse your people's leader." '	5 «Yo no sabía, hermanos, que era el Sumo Sacerdote, respondió Pablo, porque está escrito: No maldecirás al jefe de tu pueblo».
6 Now Paul was wel aware that one party was made up of Sadducees and the other of Pharisees, so hecal ed out in the Sanhedrin, 'Brothers, I am a Pharisee and the son of Pharisees. It is for our hope in theresurrection of the dead that I am on trial.'	6 Pablo, sabiendo que había dos partidos, el de los saduceos y el de los fariseos, exclamó en medio del Sanedrín: «Hermanos, yo soy fariseo, hijo de fariseos, y ahora me están juzgando a causa de nuestra esperanza en la resurrección de los muertos».
7 As soon as he said this, a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the assemblywas split between the two parties.	7 Apenas pronunció estas palabras, surgió una disputa entre fariseos y saduceos, y la asamblea se dividió.
8 For the Sadducees say there is neither resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit, while the Pharisees accept allthree.	8 Porque los saduceos niegan la resurrección y la existencia de los ángeles y de los espíritus; los fariseos, por el contrario, admiten una y otra cosas.
9 The shouting grew louder, and some of the scribes from the Pharisees' party stood up and protestedstrongly, 'We find nothing wrong with this man. Suppose a spirit has spoken to him, or an angel?'	9 Se produjo un griterío, y algunos escribas del partido de los fariseos se pusieron de pie y protestaron enérgicamente: «Nosotros no encontramos nada de malo en este hombre. ¿Y si le hubiera hablado algún espíritu o un ángel...?».
10 Feeling was running high, and the tribune, afraid that they would tear Paul to pieces, ordered histroops to go down and haul him out and bring him into the fortress.	10 Como la disputa se hacía cada vez más violenta, el tribuno, temiendo por la integridad de Pablo, mandó descender a los soldados para que lo sacaran de allí y lo llevaran de nuevo a la fortaleza.
11 Next night, the Lord appeared to him and said, 'Courage! You have borne witness for me inJerusalem, now you must do the same in Rome.'	11 A la mañana siguiente, el Señor se apareció a Pablo y le dijo: «Animo, así como has dado testimonio de mí en Jerusalén, también tendrás que darlo en Roma».
12 When it was day, the Jews held a secret meeting at which they made a vow not to eat or drink untilthey had kil ed Paul.	12 Al amanecer, los judíos se confabularon y se comprometieron bajo juramente a no comer ni beber, hasta no haber matado a Pablo.
13 More than forty of them entered this pact,	13 Los comprometidos en la conjuración eran más de cuarenta.
14 and they went to the chief priests and elders and told them, 'We have made a solemn vow to letnothing pass our lips until we have killed Paul.	14 Fueron al encuentro de los sumos sacerdotes y los ancianos, y les dijeron: «Nosotros nos hemos comprometido bajo juramento a no probar nada antes de haber matado a Pablo.
15 Now it is up to you and the Sanhedrin together to apply to the tribune to bring him down to you, asthough you meant to examine his case more closely; we, on our side, are prepared to dispose of him before hereaches you.'	15 Pónganse de acuerdo con el Sanedrín, y propongan al tribuno que lo haga comparecer delante de ustedes con el pretexto de examinar más exactamente su causa; nosotros, por nuestra parte, estaremos preparados para matarlo en el camino».
16 But the son of Paul's sister heard of the ambush they were laying and made his way into the fortressand told Paul,	16 Pero un sobrino de Pablo, al enterarse de la emboscada, se dirigió a la fortaleza y entró para prevenir a Pablo.
17 who cal ed one of the centurions and said, 'Take this young man to the tribune; he has something totel him.'	17 Este, llamando a uno de los centuriones, le dijo: «Acompaña a este muchacho hasta donde está el tribuno, porque tiene algo que comunicarle».
18 So the man took him to the tribune, and reported, 'The prisoner Paul summoned me and requestedme to bring this young man to you; he has something to tel you.'	18 El centurión lo llevó y dijo al tribuno: «El prisionero Pablo me pidió que te trajera a este muchacho, porque tiene algo que decirte».
19 Then the tribune took him by the hand and drew him aside and questioned him in private, 'What is ityou have to tel me?'	19 El tribuno, tomándolo de la mano, lo llevó aparte y le preguntó: «¿Qué tienes que comunicarme?».
20 He replied, 'The Jews have made a plan to ask you to take Paul down to the Sanhedrin tomorrow, asthough they meant to enquire more closely into his case.	20 El muchacho le respondió: «Los judíos, bajo pretexto de examinar más a fondo la causa, se han puesto de acuerdo para pedirte que mañana presentes a Pablo ante el Sanedrín.
21 Do not believe them. There are more than forty of them lying in wait for him, and they have vowed notto eat or drink until they have got rid of him. They are ready now and only waiting for your order to be given.'	21 No lo creas. Es una emboscada que le preparan más de cuarenta de ellos, comprometidos bajo juramente a no comer ni beber hasta haberlo matado. Ya están dispuestos y sólo esperan tu consentimiento».
22 The tribune let the young man go with this order, 'Tell no one that you have given me this information.'	22 El tribuno despidió al muchacho, haciéndole esta recomendación: «No digas a nadie que me has contado esto».
23 Then he summoned two of the centurions and said, 'Get two hundred soldiers ready to leave forCaesarea by the third hour of the night with seventy cavalry and two hundred auxiliaries;	23 Después llamó a dos centuriones y les dijo: «Preparen doscientos soldados, setenta jinetes y doscientos lanceros, para que salgan en dirección a Cesarea a las nueve de la noche.
24 provide horses for Paul, and deliver him unharmed to Felix the governor.'	24 Preparen también caballos para Pablo, y llévenlo sano y salvo hasta el gobernador Félix».
25 He also wrote a letter in these terms:	25 Y escribió una carta que decía:
26 'Claudius Lysias to his Excel ency the governor Felix, greetings.	26 «Claudio Lisias saluda al excelentísimo gobernador Félix.
27 This man had been seized by the Jews and would have been murdered by them; but I came on thescene with my troops and got him away, having discovered that he was a Roman citizen.	27 Aquí te envío a un hombre que fue detenido por los judíos, y cuando ya lo iban a matar, enterándome de que era ciudadano romano, intervine con mis soldados y pude rescatarlo.
28 Wanting to find out what charge they were making against him, I brought him before their Sanhedrin.	28 Queriendo saber exactamente de qué lo acusaban, lo hice comparecer delante del Tribunal judío,
29 I found that the accusation concerned disputed points of their Law, but that there was no chargedeserving death or imprisonment.	29 pero comprobé que se lo acusaba por cuestiones relativas a la Ley de los judíos, y que no había ningún cargo por el que mereciera la muerte o la prisión.
30 Acting on information that there was a conspiracy against the man, I hasten to send him to you, and have notified his accusers that they must state their case against him in your presence.'	30 Informado de que se tramaba una conspiración contra este hombre, he querido enviarlo allí en seguida, ordenando también a sus acusadores que te expongan los cargos que tengan contra él. Adiós».
31 The soldiers carried out their orders; they took Paul and escorted him by night to Antipatris.	31 De acuerdo con la orden recibida, los soldados tomaron a Pablo y lo condujeron de noche a Antipátride.
32 Next day they left the mounted escort to go on with him and returned to the fortress.	32 Al día siguiente, dejaron que los jinetes partieran con él, y ellos se volvieron a la fortaleza.
33 On arriving at Caesarea the escort delivered the letter to the governor and handed Paul over to him.	33 Llegados a Cesarea, los jinetes entregaron la carta al gobernador y le presentaron a Pablo.
34 When he had read it, he asked Paul what province he came from. Learning that he was from Ciliciahe said,	34 El gobernador leyó la carta y preguntó de qué provincia era. Al saber que era de Cilicia,
35 'I wil hear your case as soon as your accusers are here too.' Then he ordered him to be held inHerod's praetorium.	35 dijo: «Te oiré cuando lleguen tus acusadores». Y lo hizo poner bajo custodia en el pretorio de Herodes.
