NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Paul looked steadily at the Sanhedrin and began to speak, 'My brothers, to this day I have conductedmyself before God with a perfectly clear conscience.'	1 Fixant du regard le Sanhédrin, Paul dit: "Frères, c'est tout à fait en bonne conscience que je me suisconduit devant Dieu jusqu'à ce jour."
2 At this the high priest Ananias ordered his attendants to strike him on the mouth.	2 Mais le grand prêtre Ananie ordonna à ses assistants de le frapper sur la bouche.
3 Then Paul said to him, 'God wil surely strike you, you whitewashed wal ! How can you sit there tojudge me according to the Law, and then break the Law by ordering a man to strike me?'	3 Alors Paul lui dit: "C'est Dieu qui te frappera, toi, muraille blanchie! Eh quoi! Tu sièges pour mejuger d'après la Loi, et, au mépris de la Loi, tu ordonnes de me frapper!"
4 The attendants said, 'Are you insulting the high priest of God?	4 Les assistants lui dirent: "C'est le grand prêtre de Dieu que tu insultes?"
5 Paul answered, 'Brothers, I did not realise it was the high priest; certainly scripture says, "You wil notcurse your people's leader." '	5 Paul répondit: "Je ne savais pas, frères, que ce fût le grand prêtre. Car il est écrit: Tu ne maudiras pasle chef de ton peuple."
6 Now Paul was wel aware that one party was made up of Sadducees and the other of Pharisees, so hecal ed out in the Sanhedrin, 'Brothers, I am a Pharisee and the son of Pharisees. It is for our hope in theresurrection of the dead that I am on trial.'	6 Paul savait qu'il y avait là d'un côté le parti des Sadducéens, de l'autre celui des Pharisiens. Il s'écriadonc dans le Sanhédrin: "Frères, je suis, moi, Pharisien, fils de Pharisiens. C'est pour notre espérance, larésurrection des morts, que je suis mis en jugement."
7 As soon as he said this, a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the assemblywas split between the two parties.	7 A peine eut-il dit cela qu'un conflit se produisit entre Pharisiens et Sadducéens, et l'assemblée sedivisa.
8 For the Sadducees say there is neither resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit, while the Pharisees accept allthree.	8 Les Sadducéens disent en effet qu'il n'y a ni résurrection, ni ange, ni esprit, tandis que les Pharisiensprofessent l'un et l'autre.
9 The shouting grew louder, and some of the scribes from the Pharisees' party stood up and protestedstrongly, 'We find nothing wrong with this man. Suppose a spirit has spoken to him, or an angel?'	9 Il se fit donc une grande clameur. Quelques scribes du parti des Pharisiens se levèrent et protestèrenténergiquement: "Nous ne trouvons rien de mal en cet homme. Et si un esprit lui avait parlé? Ou un ange?"
10 Feeling was running high, and the tribune, afraid that they would tear Paul to pieces, ordered histroops to go down and haul him out and bring him into the fortress.	10 La dispute devenait de plus en plus vive. Le tribun, craignant qu'ils ne missent Paul en pièces, fitdescendre la troupe pour l'enlever du milieu d'eux et le ramener à la forteresse.
11 Next night, the Lord appeared to him and said, 'Courage! You have borne witness for me inJerusalem, now you must do the same in Rome.'	11 La nuit suivante, le Seigneur vint le trouver et lui dit: "Courage! De même que tu as rendutémoignage de moi à Jérusalem, ainsi faut-il encore que tu témoignes à Rome."
12 When it was day, the Jews held a secret meeting at which they made a vow not to eat or drink untilthey had kil ed Paul.	12 Lorsqu'il fit jour, les Juifs tinrent un conciliabule, où ils s'engagèrent par anathème à ne pas mangerni boire avant d'avoir tué Paul.
13 More than forty of them entered this pact,	13 Ils étaient plus de 40 à avoir fait cette conjuration.
14 and they went to the chief priests and elders and told them, 'We have made a solemn vow to letnothing pass our lips until we have killed Paul.	14 Ils allèrent trouver les grands prêtres et les anciens, et leur dirent: "Nous nous sommes engagés paranathème à ne rien prendre avant d'avoir tué Paul.
15 Now it is up to you and the Sanhedrin together to apply to the tribune to bring him down to you, asthough you meant to examine his case more closely; we, on our side, are prepared to dispose of him before hereaches you.'	15 Vous donc maintenant, d'accord avec le Sanhédrin, expliquez au tribun qu'il doit vous l'amener,sous prétexte d'examiner plus à fond son affaire. De notre côté, nous sommes prêts à le tuer avant qu'il n'arrive."
16 But the son of Paul's sister heard of the ambush they were laying and made his way into the fortressand told Paul,	16 Mais le fils de la soeur de Paul eut connaissance du guet-apens. Il se rendit à la forteresse, entra etprévint Paul.
17 who cal ed one of the centurions and said, 'Take this young man to the tribune; he has something totel him.'	17 Appelant un des centurions, Paul lui dit: "Conduis ce jeune homme au tribun; il a quelque chose àlui communiquer."
18 So the man took him to the tribune, and reported, 'The prisoner Paul summoned me and requestedme to bring this young man to you; he has something to tel you.'	18 Le centurion le prit donc et l'amena au tribun. "Le prisonnier Paul, dit-il, m'a appelé et m'a prié det'amener ce jeune homme, qui a quelque chose à te dire."
19 Then the tribune took him by the hand and drew him aside and questioned him in private, 'What is ityou have to tel me?'	19 Le tribun prit le jeune homme par la main, se retira à l'écart et lui demanda: "Qu'as-tu à mecommuniquer?" -
20 He replied, 'The Jews have made a plan to ask you to take Paul down to the Sanhedrin tomorrow, asthough they meant to enquire more closely into his case.	20 "Les Juifs, répondit-il, se sont concertés pour te prier d'amener Paul demain au Sanhédrin, sousprétexte d'enquêter plus à fond sur son cas.
21 Do not believe them. There are more than forty of them lying in wait for him, and they have vowed notto eat or drink until they have got rid of him. They are ready now and only waiting for your order to be given.'	21 Ne va pas les croire. Plus de 40 d'entre eux le guettent, qui se sont engagés par anathème à ne pasmanger ni boire avant de l'avoir tué. Et maintenant, ils sont tout prêts, escomptant ton accord."
22 The tribune let the young man go with this order, 'Tell no one that you have given me this information.'	22 Le tribun congédia le jeune homme avec cette recommandation: "Ne raconte à personne que tu m'asrévélé ces choses."
23 Then he summoned two of the centurions and said, 'Get two hundred soldiers ready to leave forCaesarea by the third hour of the night with seventy cavalry and two hundred auxiliaries;	23 Puis il appela deux des centurions et leur dit: "Tenez prêts à partir pour Césarée, dès la troisièmeheure de la nuit, 200 soldats, 70 cavaliers et 200 hommes d'armes.
24 provide horses for Paul, and deliver him unharmed to Felix the governor.'	24 Qu'on ait aussi des chevaux pour faire monter Paul et le conduire sain et sauf au gouverneur Félix."
25 He also wrote a letter in these terms:	25 Et il écrivit une lettre ainsi conçue:
26 'Claudius Lysias to his Excel ency the governor Felix, greetings.	26 "Claudius Lysias au très excellent gouverneur Félix, salut!
27 This man had been seized by the Jews and would have been murdered by them; but I came on thescene with my troops and got him away, having discovered that he was a Roman citizen.	27 L'homme que voici avait été pris par les Juifs, et ils allaient le tuer, quand j'arrivai avec la troupe etle leur arrachai, ayant appris qu'il était citoyen romain.
28 Wanting to find out what charge they were making against him, I brought him before their Sanhedrin.	28 J'ai voulu savoir au juste pourquoi ils l'accusaient et je l'ai amené dans leur Sanhédrin.
29 I found that the accusation concerned disputed points of their Law, but that there was no chargedeserving death or imprisonment.	29 J'ai constaté que l'accusation se rapportait à des points contestés de leur Loi, mais qu'il n'y avaitaucune charge qui entraînât la mort ou les chaînes.
30 Acting on information that there was a conspiracy against the man, I hasten to send him to you, and have notified his accusers that they must state their case against him in your presence.'	30 Avisé qu'un complot se préparait contre cet homme, je te l'ai aussitôt envoyé, et j'ai informé sesaccusateurs qu'ils avaient à porter devant toi leur plainte contre lui."
31 The soldiers carried out their orders; they took Paul and escorted him by night to Antipatris.	31 Conformément aux ordres reçus, les soldats prirent Paul et le conduisirent de nuit à Antipatris.
32 Next day they left the mounted escort to go on with him and returned to the fortress.	32 Le lendemain, ils laissèrent les cavaliers s'en aller avec lui et rentrèrent à la forteresse.
33 On arriving at Caesarea the escort delivered the letter to the governor and handed Paul over to him.	33 Arrivés à Césarée, les cavaliers remirent la lettre au gouverneur et lui présentèrent Paul.
34 When he had read it, he asked Paul what province he came from. Learning that he was from Ciliciahe said,	34 Après avoir lu la lettre, le gouverneur s'informa de quelle province il était. Apprenant qu'il était deCilicie:
35 'I wil hear your case as soon as your accusers are here too.' Then he ordered him to be held inHerod's praetorium.	35 "Je t'entendrai, dit-il, quand tes accusateurs seront arrivés, eux aussi." Et il le fit garder dans leprétoire d'Hérode.
