1 Paul looked steadily at the Sanhedrin and began to speak, 'My brothers, to this day I have conductedmyself before God with a perfectly clear conscience.'	1 E mirato fissamente il sinedrio, disse Paolo: uomini fratelli, io con tutta buona coscienza mi son portato dinanzi a Dio fino a questo giorno.
2 At this the high priest Ananias ordered his attendants to strike him on the mouth.	2 Ma il principe de' sacerdoti Anania ordinò a' circostanti, che lo percuotessero nella bocca.
3 Then Paul said to him, 'God wil surely strike you, you whitewashed wal ! How can you sit there tojudge me according to the Law, and then break the Law by ordering a man to strike me?'	3 Allora Paolo gli disse; percuoterà te Iddio, muraglia imbiancata. E tu siedi a giudicarmi secondo la legge, e contro la legge ordini, che io sia percosso?
4 The attendants said, 'Are you insulting the high priest of God?	4 Ma i circostanti dissero: tu oltraggi il sommo sacerdote di Dio?
5 Paul answered, 'Brothers, I did not realise it was the high priest; certainly scripture says, "You wil notcurse your people's leader." '	5 E Paolo disse: fratelli, io non sapeva che egli è il Principe de' sacerdoti. Imperocché sta scritto: non oltraggiare il principe del popolo tuo.
6 Now Paul was wel aware that one party was made up of Sadducees and the other of Pharisees, so hecal ed out in the Sanhedrin, 'Brothers, I am a Pharisee and the son of Pharisees. It is for our hope in theresurrection of the dead that I am on trial.'	6 E sapendo Paolo, come una parte erano Sadducei, e l'altra Farisei, disse ad alta voce nel sinedrio: uomini fratelli, io son Fariseo, figliuolo di Farisei, sono chiamato in giudizio a cagione della speranza della risurrezione de' morti.
7 As soon as he said this, a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the assemblywas split between the two parties.	7 E detto ch'egli ebbe questo nacque disparere tra i Farisei, e i Sadducei, e la moltitudine fu divisa.
8 For the Sadducees say there is neither resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit, while the Pharisees accept allthree.	8 Imperocché i Sadducei dicono non esservi risurrezione, né Angelo, né Spirito: i Farisei poi confessano ambedue queste cose.
9 The shouting grew louder, and some of the scribes from the Pharisees' party stood up and protestedstrongly, 'We find nothing wrong with this man. Suppose a spirit has spoken to him, or an angel?'	9 E vi furon de' clamori grandi. E alzatisi alcuni de' Farisei contendevano, dicendo: non troviamo male alcuno in quest'uomo: Chi sa, se uno spirito, o un Angelo gli abbia parlato?
10 Feeling was running high, and the tribune, afraid that they would tear Paul to pieces, ordered histroops to go down and haul him out and bring him into the fortress.	10 E suscitatasi una gran dissensione, temendo il tribuno, che Paolo non fosse da essi fatto in pezzi, ordinò, che scendesser i soldati, e lo traesser di mezzo a coloro, e lo conducessero agli alloggiamenti.
11 Next night, the Lord appeared to him and said, 'Courage! You have borne witness for me inJerusalem, now you must do the same in Rome.'	11 E la notte seguente gli apparve il Signore, e disse: fatti animo: imperocché siccome hai renduto per me testimonianza in Gerusalemme, cosi fa d'uopo, che tu la renda anche in Roma.
12 When it was day, the Jews held a secret meeting at which they made a vow not to eat or drink untilthey had kil ed Paul.	12 E fattosi giorno si unirono alcuni de' Giudei, e anatematizzarono se stessi, dicendo: che non avrebber mangiato, nè bevuto, finché non avessero ucciso Paolo.
13 More than forty of them entered this pact,	13 Ed erano più di quaranta quelli, che aveano fatta questa congiura:
14 and they went to the chief priests and elders and told them, 'We have made a solemn vow to letnothing pass our lips until we have killed Paul.	14 I quali andaron dai principi de' sacerdoti, e dai seniori, e dissero: ci siam obbligati con anatema a non prender cibo, finché non ammazziamo Paolo.
15 Now it is up to you and the Sanhedrin together to apply to the tribune to bring him down to you, asthough you meant to examine his case more closely; we, on our side, are prepared to dispose of him before hereaches you.'	15 Ora dunque voi col sinedrio fate sapere al tribuno, che lo conduca alla vostra presenza, come se foste per iscoprir il qualche cosa di più sicuro intorno a lui. E noi prima che egli vi si accosti, siamo pronti a ucciderlo.
16 But the son of Paul's sister heard of the ambush they were laying and made his way into the fortressand told Paul,	16 Ma avendo un figliuolo della sorella di Paolo avuta notizia di queste insidie, andò, ed entrò negli alloggiamenti, e ne diede parte a Paolo.
17 who cal ed one of the centurions and said, 'Take this young man to the tribune; he has something totel him.'	17 E Paolo chiamalo a se uno de' centurioni, disse: conduci questo giovinetto al tribuno, perché ha qualche cosa a fargli sapere.
18 So the man took him to the tribune, and reported, 'The prisoner Paul summoned me and requestedme to bring this young man to you; he has something to tel you.'	18 E quegli lo prese, e lo condusse al tribuno, e disse: quel Paolo, che è in catene, mi ha pregato di condurre a te questo giovinetto, il quale ha da dirti qualche cosa.
19 Then the tribune took him by the hand and drew him aside and questioned him in private, 'What is ityou have to tel me?'	19 Allora il tribuno presolo per mano, si tirò con esso in disparte, e lo interrogò: che è quello, che tu hai a farmi sapere?
20 He replied, 'The Jews have made a plan to ask you to take Paul down to the Sanhedrin tomorrow, asthough they meant to enquire more closely into his case.	20 E quegli disse: i Giudei si sono accordati a pregarti, che domane tu conduca Paolo al sinedrio, come per esaminarlo più diligentemente;
21 Do not believe them. There are more than forty of them lying in wait for him, and they have vowed notto eat or drink until they have got rid of him. They are ready now and only waiting for your order to be given.'	21 Ma tu non fare a modo loro: imperocché tendono insidie a lui più di quaranta uomini dei loro, i quali hanno anatematizzato se stessi, che non mangieranno, né berranno, sino a tanto che non l'abbiano ucciso: e adesso stanno preparati, aspettandosi, che tu loro il prometta.
22 The tribune let the young man go with this order, 'Tell no one that you have given me this information.'	22 Il tribuno adunque rimandò il giovinetto, ordinandogli di non dire ad alcuno di avergli notificato tali cose.
23 Then he summoned two of the centurions and said, 'Get two hundred soldiers ready to leave forCaesarea by the third hour of the night with seventy cavalry and two hundred auxiliaries;	23 E chiamati due centurioni, disse loro: mettete all'ordine dugento soldati, che vadano fino a Cesarea, e settanta cavalli, e dugento uomini armati di lancia per la terza ora della notte:
24 provide horses for Paul, and deliver him unharmed to Felix the governor.'	24 E preparate le cavalcature sulle quali salvo conducessero Paolo al preside Felice:
25 He also wrote a letter in these terms:	25 (Imperocché ebbe timore, che forse i Giudei non lo involassero, e lo uccidessero, ed egli poi fosse calunniato, quasi avesse tirato al denaro),
26 'Claudius Lysias to his Excel ency the governor Felix, greetings.	26 E scrisse lettera di tal tenore Claudio Lisia a Felice ottimo preside, salute.
27 This man had been seized by the Jews and would have been murdered by them; but I came on thescene with my troops and got him away, having discovered that he was a Roman citizen.	27 Quest'uomo preso da' Giudei, e vicino ad essere ucciso da essi, sopraggiunto io co' soldati lo liberai, avendo inteso com'egli è Romano:
28 Wanting to find out what charge they were making against him, I brought him before their Sanhedrin.	28 E volendo sapere di qual delitto lo accusassero, lo condussi al loro sinedrio.
29 I found that the accusation concerned disputed points of their Law, but that there was no chargedeserving death or imprisonment.	29 Ma trovai, die egli era accusato per conto di questioni della loro legge, senza però avere delitto alcuno degno di morte, o di catene.
30 Acting on information that there was a conspiracy against the man, I hasten to send him to you, and have notified his accusers that they must state their case against him in your presence.'	30 Ed essendo io stato avvertito delle insidie ordite contro di lui, lo ho mandato a te, intimando anche agli accusatori, che la discorrano innanzi a te. Stà sano.
31 The soldiers carried out their orders; they took Paul and escorted him by night to Antipatris.	31 I soldati adunque secondo l'ordine dato ad essi, preser seco Paolo, e lo condusser la notte ad Antipatride.
32 Next day they left the mounted escort to go on with him and returned to the fortress.	32 E il dì seguente lasciando i cavalieri, che andasser con lui, ritornarono agli alloggiamenti.
33 On arriving at Caesarea the escort delivered the letter to the governor and handed Paul over to him.	33 E quegli entrati in Cesarea, e data la lettera al preside, gli presentarono eziandio Paolo.
34 When he had read it, he asked Paul what province he came from. Learning that he was from Ciliciahe said,	34 E lettala il preside, e interrogatolo, di qual paese egli fosse, e sentito, che era di Cilicia,
35 'I wil hear your case as soon as your accusers are here too.' Then he ordered him to be held inHerod's praetorium.	35 Ti ascolterò, disse, arrivati, che siano i tuoi accusatori. E ordinò, che fosse custodito nel pretorio di Erode.
