NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
The word of Yahweh which came to Micah of Moresheth during the reigns of Jotham, Ahaz andHezekiah kings of Judah. His visions about Samaria and Jerusalem.1 The word of the Lord that came to Micheas the Morasthite, in the days of Joathan, Achaz, and Ezechias, kings of Juda: which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.
Listen, al you peoples, attend, earth and everyone on it! Yahweh intends to give evidence against you,the Lord, from his holy temple.2 Hear, all ye people: and let the earth give ear, and all that is therein: and let the Lord God be a witness to you, the Lord from his holy temple.
For look, Yahweh is leaving his home, down he comes, he treads the heights of earth.3 For behold the Lord will come forth out of his place: and he will come down, and will tread upon the high places of the earth.
Beneath him, the mountains melt, and val eys are torn open, like wax near a fire, like water pouringdown a slope.4 And the mountains shall be melted under him: and the valleys shall be cleft, as wax before the fire, and as waters that run down a steep place.
Al this is because of the crime of Jacob, the sin of the House of Israel. What is the crime of Jacob? Is itnot Samaria? What is the sin of the House of Judah? Is it not Jerusalem?5 For the wickedness of Jacob is all this, and for the sins of the house of Israel. What is the wickedness of Jacob? is it not Samaria? and what are the high places of Juda? are they not Jerusalem ?
So I shal make Samaria a ruin in the open country, a place for planting vines. I shal send her stonesrol ing into the val ey, until I have laid her foundations bare.6 And I will make Samaria as a heap of stones in the field when a vineyard is planted: and I will bring down the stones thereof into the valley, and will lay her foundations bare.
Al her images wil be shattered, al her earnings consumed by fire. I shal leave al her idols derelict-they were amassed out of prostitutes' earnings and prostitutes' earnings once more they wil be.7 And all her graven things shall be cut in pieces, and all her wages shall be burnt with fire, and I will bring to destruction all her idols: for they were gathered together of the hire of a harlot, and unto the hire of a harlot they shall return.
This is why I shal howl and wail, why I shal go barefoot and naked, why I shall howl like the jackals, why I shal shriek like the owls;8 Therefore will I lament and howl: I will go stripped and naked: I will make a wailing like the dragons, and a mourning like the ostriches.
for there is no cure for the wounds that Yahweh inflicts: the blow fal s on Judah, it fal s on the gateway ofmy people, on Jerusalem itself.9 Because her wound is desperate, because it is come even to Juda, it hath touched the gate of my people even to Jerusalem.
Do not announce it in Gath, in . . . shed no tears! In Beth-Leaphrah rol in the dust!10 Declare ye it not in Geth, weep ya not with tears: in the house of Dust sprinkle yourselves with dust.
Sound the horn, inhabitant of Shaphir! She has not left her city, she who lives in Zaanan. Beth-Ezel istorn from its foundations, from its strong supports.11 And pass away, O thou that dwellest in the Beautiful place, covered with thy shame: she went not forth that dwelleth in the confines: the House adjoining shall receive mourning from you, which stood by herself.
What hope has she of happiness, she who lives in Maroth? Instead Yahweh sent down disaster on thegateway of Jerusalem itself!12 For she is become weak unto good that dwelleth in bitterness: for evil is come down from the Lord into the gate of Jerusalem.
Harness the horse to the chariot, you inhabitant of Lachish! That is where the sin of the daughter ofZion began; the crimes of Israel can be traced to you!13 A tumult of chariots hath astonished the inhabitants of Lachis: it is the beginning of sin to the daughter of Sion, for in thee were found the crimes of Israel.
And so you must provide a dowry for Moresheth-Gath. Beth-Achzib wil prove a disappointment for thekings of Israel.14 Therefore shall she send messengers to the inheritance of Geth : the houses of lying to deceive the kings of Israel.
The plunderer will come to you again, you citizen of Mareshah! And into Adullam wil vanish the gloryof Israel.15 Yet will I bring an heir to thee that dwellest in Maresa: even to Odollam shall the glory of Israel come.
Off with your hair, shave your head, for the children that were your joy. Make yourselves bald like thevulture, for they have left you for exile.16 Make thee bald, and be polled for thy delicate children: enlarge thy baldness as the eagle: for they are carried into captivity from thee.
