NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 Now the people began to complain, which was offensive to Yahweh's ears. When Yahweh heard, hisanger was aroused and the fire of Yahweh broke out among them; it devoured one end of the camp.	1 Or il popolo si levò a mormorare contro il Signore, quasi lamentandosi delle fatiche. Il Signore appena li sentì si mosse a sdegno: il fuoco del Signore divampò contro di essi e divorò l'estremità del campo.
2 The people appealed to Moses who interceded with Yahweh and the fire died down.	2 Avendo il popolo gridato a Mosè, Mosè pregò il Signore, e il fuoco si estinse.
3 So the place was cal ed Taberah, because the fire of Yahweh had broken out among them.	3 Mosè chiamò quel luogo « Incendio», perchè il fuoco, del Signore aveva divampato contro di loro.
4 The rabble who had joined the people were feeling the pangs of hunger, and the Israelites began toweep again. 'Who wil give us meat to eat?' they said.	4 Or la plebaglia che era venuta con essi arse d'ingorda, brama, e seduta a piangere, unitisi a lei anche i figli d'Israele, diceva: « Chi ci darà da mangiare delle carni?
5 'Think of the fish we used to eat free in Egypt, the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic!	5 Ci ricordiamo dei pesci che in Egitto mangiavamo per nulla, dei cocomeri, dei poponi, dei porri, delle cipolle e degli agli.
6 But now we are withering away; there is nothing wherever we look except this manna!'	6 La nostra anima è arida; i nostri occhi non vedon altro che manna ».
7 The manna was like coriander seed and had the appearance of bdellium.	7 La manna era simile al seme di coriandolo, e aveva il colore del bdellio;
8 The people went round gathering it, and ground it in a mill or crushed it with a pestle; it was thencooked in a pot and made into pancakes. It tasted like cake made with oil.	8 il popolo andava intorno a raccoglierla e poi la riduceva in farina colla macina o la pestava nel mortaio, la coceva nella pentola e ne faceva delle stiacciate gustose come il pane cotto coll'olio.
9 When the dew fell on the camp at night-time, the manna fell with it.	9 E quando la notte sul campo cadeva la rugiada, cadeva anche la manna.
10 Moses heard the people weeping, each family at the door of its tent. Yahweh's anger was greatlyaroused; Moses too found it disgraceful,	10 E Mosè sentì che il popolo piangeva in tutte le famiglie, ciascuno alla porta della sua tenda. L'ira del Signore si accese grandemente, ed anche a Mosè la cosa parve intollerabile,
11 and he said to Yahweh: 'Why do you treat your servant so badly? In what respect have I failed towin your favour, for you to lay the burden of al these people on me?	11 è disse al Signore: « Perchè hai afflitto il tuo servo? Perchè non trovo grazia dinanzi a te? Perchè mi hai posto addosso il peso di tutto questo popolo?
12 Was it I who conceived all these people, was I their father, for you to say to me, "Carry them in yourarms, like a foster-father carrying an unweaned child, to the country which I swore to give their fathers"?	12 L'ho forse concepito io tutto questo popolo, l'ho forse generato io, perchè tu abbia a dirmi: Portali nel tuo seno come la nutrice suol portare il bambino, e portali nella terra che ho promosso con giuramento ai loro padri?
13 Where am I to find meat to give al these people, pestering me with their tears and saying, "Give usmeat to eat"?	13 Dove ho le carni da dare a sì gran turba? Essi piangono dietro a me e dicono: Dacci a mangiare della carne.
14 I cannot carry al these people on my own; the weight is too much for me.	14 Io da solo non posso sostenere tutto questo popolo: è troppo grave per me.
15 If this is how you mean to treat me, please kil me outright! If only I could win your favour and bespared the sight of my misery!'	15 Se ti pare altrimenti, ti prego che tu mi faccia morire, se ho trovato grazia agli occhi tuoi, affinchè non sia oppresso da tanti mali ».
16 Yahweh said to Moses, 'Col ect me seventy of the elders of Israel, men you know to be the people'selders and scribes. Bring them to the Tent of Meeting, and let them stand beside you there.	16 E il Signore disse a Mosè: « Radunami settanta uomini tra gli anziani d'Israele, da te conosciuti come anziani del popolo e maestri, conducili alla porta del Tabernacolo dell'alleanza, ove staranno teco,
17 I shall come down and talk to you there and shal take some of the spirit which is on you and put iton them. Then they wil bear the burden of the people with you, and you will no longer have to bear it on yourown.	17 finchè io non discenda a parlarti, a prendere del tuo spirito per darlo a loro, perdi è sostengan teco il peso del popolo e, non sia aggravato tu soltanto.
18 'And say to the people, "Purify yourselves for tomorrow and you wil have meat to eat, since youhave wept in Yahweh's hearing, saying: Who wil give us meat to eat? How happy we were in Egypt! Very wel ,Yahweh wil give you meat to eat.	18 E dirai al popolo: Santificatevi, e domani mungerete delle carni: siccome io vi ho sentito dire: Chi ci darà a mangiare della carne? Si stava pur bene in Egitto, ecco il Signore vi darà della carme e voi mangerete, non per un giorno,
19 You wil eat it not for one day, or two, or five, or ten or twenty,	19 non per due o cinque o dieci, nè per venti giorni,
20 but for a whole month, until it comes out of your nostrils and sickens you, since you have rejectedYahweh who is among you, and have wept before him saying: Why did we ever leave Egypt?" '	20 ma per un mese intero, fino a tanto che non vi esca per le narici e vi faccia nausea; perchè avete rigettato il Signore che è in mezzo a voi, e avete pianto nel cospetto di lui dicendo: Perchè siamo ascili dall'Egitto? »
21 Moses said, 'The people round me number six hundred thousand foot soldiers, and you say, "I shalgive them meat to eat for a whole month"!	21 E Mosè disse,: « Vi sono seicento mila uomini a piedi in questo popolo, e, tu dici: Darò loro a mangiare, della carne per un mese intero.
22 If al the flocks and herds were slaughtered, would that be enough for them? If al the fish in the seaswere collected, would that be enough for them?'	22 Sì dovrà torse uccidere gran moltitudine di pecore e di buoi da bastare a sfamarli? O dovran radunarsi tutti i pesci del mare per satollarli? »
23 Yahweh said to Moses, 'Is the arm of Yahweh so short? You shal see whether the promise I havemade to you comes true or not.'	23 Il Signore gli rispose: « E' forse impotente la mano del Signore? Or vedrai se compio coll'opera, la mia parola ».
24 Moses went out and told the people what Yahweh had said. Then he col ected seventy of thepeople's elders and stationed them round the Tent.	24 Or Mosè andò a riferire al popolo le parole del Signore, e radunati settanta uomini degli anziani d'Israele, li fece stare intorno al Tabernacolo.
25 Yahweh descended in the cloud. He spoke to him and took some of the spirit that was on him andput it on the seventy elders. When the spirit came on them they prophesied -- but only once.	25 E il Signore scese, nella nuvola e gli parlò, e, preso dello Spirito che era in Mosè, lo diede ai settanta. Or come si fu posato su di essi lo Spirito, profetarono e non cessaron più.
26 Two men had stayed back in the camp; one was called Eldad and the other Medad. The spirit camedown on them; though they had not gone to the Tent, their names were enrol ed among the rest. These began toprophesy in the camp.	26 intanto, essendo rimasti negli accampamenti due uomini, chiamati uno Eldad e l'altro Medad, lo Spirito si pose sopra di loro, che eran tra gl'iscritti, ma non eran usciti per andare al Tabernacolo.
27 A young man ran to tel Moses this. 'Look,' he said, 'Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.'	27 Or mentre essi profetavano nel campo, un giovane corse a darne la nuova a Mosè, dicendo: « Eldad e Medad profetano negli accampamenti ».
28 Joshua son of Nun, who had served Moses since he was a boy, spoke up and said, 'My lord Moses,stop them!'	28 Subito Giosuè, figlio di Nuli, ministro di Mosè ed eletto fra molti, disse: « Mosè, signor mio, non glielo permettere! »
29 Moses replied, 'Are you jealous on my account? If only al Yahweh's people were prophets, andYahweh had given them his spirit!'	29 Mosè invece disse: « Sei tu geloso per me? Oh, profetasse tutto il popolo e il Signore desse loro il suo Spirito!
30 Moses then went back to the camp with the elders of Israel.	30 Mosè e i seniori d'Israele tornarono agli accampamenti.
31 A wind, sent by Yahweh, started blowing from the sea bringing quails which it deposited on thecamp. They lay for a distance of a day's march either side of the camp, two cubits thick on the ground.	31 E un vento mandato dal Signore, prese delle quaglie al di là del mare, le portò e le fece cadere sugli accampamenti e intorno al campo da ogni parte, per lo spazio d'una giornata di cammino; esse svolazzavano per l'aria all'altezza di due cubiti sopra la terra.
32 The people were up al that day and night and all the next day collecting quails: the least gatheredby anyone was ten homer; then they spread them out round the camp.	32 E il popolo raccolse quaglie tutto quel giorno, la notte e il giorno dopo: chi ne raccolse meno ne ebbe dieci cori e le fecero seccare intorno agli accampamenti.
33 The meat was still between their teeth, not even chewed, when Yahweh's anger was aroused by thepeople. Yahweh struck them with a very great plague.	33 Ne avevano ancora la carne fra i denti, e non l'avevano ancora finita, quand'ecco l'ira del Signore accendersi contro del popolo e percuoterlo con una piaga grandissima.
34 The name given to this place was Kibroth-ha-Taavah, because it was there that they buried thepeople who had indulged their greed.	34 Quel luogo fu chiamato « Sepolcri della concupiscenza », perchè li fu seppellita la gente dalle ingorde brame. Partiti poi dai « Sepolcri della concupiscenza », giunsero ad Ilaserot, ed ivi si fermarono.
35 From Kibroth-ha-Taavah the people set out for Hazeroth, and at Hazeroth they pitched camp.
