1 Now the people began to complain, which was offensive to Yahweh's ears. When Yahweh heard, hisanger was aroused and the fire of Yahweh broke out among them; it devoured one end of the camp.	1 Frattanto si levò un mormorio nel popolo, quasi si dolessero del Signore per ragione dellefatiche. La qual cosa avendo udita il Signore, si mosse a sdegno. E il fuoco del Signoreacceso contro di essi consumò l'ultima parte degli alloggiamenti.
2 The people appealed to Moses who interceded with Yahweh and the fire died down.	2 E avendo il popolo alzate le strida a Mosè, Mosè fece orazione al Signore, e il fuocorientrò sotto terra.
3 So the place was cal ed Taberah, because the fire of Yahweh had broken out among them.	3 E Mosè pose a quel luogo il nome d'Incendio: perché ivi si accese il fuoco del Signorecontro di loro.
4 The rabble who had joined the people were feeling the pangs of hunger, and the Israelites began toweep again. 'Who wil give us meat to eat?' they said.	4 Imperocché la plebaglia, che era venuta con essi, arse d'ingorda brama, e stando assisa, epiangendo, unitisi a lei de' figliuoli d'Israele, diceva: Chi ci darà carni da mangiare?
5 'Think of the fish we used to eat free in Egypt, the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic!	5 Ci ricordiamo dei pesci, che mangiavamo a ufo in Egitto: tornano in mente a noi i cocomeri,i poponi, i porri, e le cipolle, e gli agli.
6 But now we are withering away; there is nothing wherever we look except this manna!'	6 L'anima nostra è languente: gli occhi nostri non veggono altro, che manna.
7 The manna was like coriander seed and had the appearance of bdellium.	7 Or la manna era simile al seme di coriandoli, del colore del bdellio:
8 The people went round gathering it, and ground it in a mill or crushed it with a pestle; it was thencooked in a pot and made into pancakes. It tasted like cake made with oil.	8 E il popolo andava intorno a raccoglierla, e la riduceva in farina sotto le macine, ovver lapestava nel mortaio, e la cuoceva nella pignatta, e ne faceva delle stiacciate di un saporequasi di pane fatto coll'olio.
9 When the dew fell on the camp at night-time, the manna fell with it.	9 E caduta che era la notte la rugiada negli accampamenti, cadeva eziandio la manna.
10 Moses heard the people weeping, each family at the door of its tent. Yahweh's anger was greatlyaroused; Moses too found it disgraceful,	10 Udì adunque Mosè, come il popolo se ne stava piangendo, ognun colla sua famiglia, e sullaporta della sua tenda. E il Signore si accese di furore: e allo stesso Mosè parve cosaintollerabile.
11 and he said to Yahweh: 'Why do you treat your servant so badly? In what respect have I failed towin your favour, for you to lay the burden of al these people on me?	11 E disse al Signore: Per qual motivo hai tu afflitto il tuo servo? per qual motivo non trovoio grazia dinanzi a te? e perché mi hai tu posto sopra le spalle il peso di tutto questopopolo?
12 Was it I who conceived all these people, was I their father, for you to say to me, "Carry them in yourarms, like a foster-father carrying an unweaned child, to the country which I swore to give their fathers"?	12 Ho io concepito, o generato tutta questa turba, onde tu abbia a dirmi: Portali sul tuo seno,come suole la nutrice portare un bambinello, e conducili nella terra promessa da me congiuramento a' padri loro?
13 Where am I to find meat to give al these people, pestering me with their tears and saying, "Give usmeat to eat"?	13 Donde trarrò io le carni da dare a si gran turba? Piangono contro di me, e dicono: Da' a noidelle carni da mangiare.
14 I cannot carry al these people on my own; the weight is too much for me.	14 Non posso io solo sostenere tutto questo popolo, il quale mi pesa.
15 If this is how you mean to treat me, please kil me outright! If only I could win your favour and bespared the sight of my misery!'	15 Che se a te pare altrimenti, pregoti di uccidermi, e ch'io trovi grazia negli occhi tuoi,onde non mi resti bersaglio di tanti mali.
16 Yahweh said to Moses, 'Col ect me seventy of the elders of Israel, men you know to be the people'selders and scribes. Bring them to the Tent of Meeting, and let them stand beside you there.	16 E il Signore disse a Mosè: Radunami settanta uomini de' vecchioni d'Israele, conosciuti date come anziani, e maestri del popolo: e li condurrai alla porta del tabernacolodell'alleanza, e farai che si fermino ivi con te,
17 I shall come down and talk to you there and shal take some of the spirit which is on you and put iton them. Then they wil bear the burden of the people with you, and you will no longer have to bear it on yourown.	17 E io scenderò, e ti parlerò: e prenderò del tuo spirito, e lo darò a quegli, affinché tecosostengano il peso del popolo, e non sii tu solo aggravato.
18 'And say to the people, "Purify yourselves for tomorrow and you wil have meat to eat, since youhave wept in Yahweh's hearing, saying: Who wil give us meat to eat? How happy we were in Egypt! Very wel ,Yahweh wil give you meat to eat.	18 Al popolo parimente dirai: Purificatevi; domane mangerete delle carni, perocché io hosentito, che dicevate: Chi darà a noi delle carni da nudrirci? Noi stavamo pur bene inEgitto. Onde il Signore darà a voi delle carni, affinché ne mangiate:
19 You wil eat it not for one day, or two, or five, or ten or twenty,	19 Non per un giorno, né per due, né per cinque, o dieci, e nemmeno per venti,
20 but for a whole month, until it comes out of your nostrils and sickens you, since you have rejectedYahweh who is among you, and have wept before him saying: Why did we ever leave Egypt?" '	20 Ma per un mese intero, fino a tanto che vi escano per le narici, e vi muovano nausea:perocché voi avete rigettato il Signore, che è in mezzo a voi, e avete pianto al cospetto dilui dicendo: Per qual motivo siam noi usciti dall'Egitto?
21 Moses said, 'The people round me number six hundred thousand foot soldiers, and you say, "I shalgive them meat to eat for a whole month"!	21 E Mosè disse: Vi sono secento mila fanti di questo popolo, e tu dici: Io darò loro dellecarni da mangiare per un intero mese.
22 If al the flocks and herds were slaughtered, would that be enough for them? If al the fish in the seaswere collected, would that be enough for them?'	22 Si dovrà egli uccidere una moltitudine di pecore, e di bovi, che bastar possa a cibarli?ovvero si rauneranno insieme tutti i pesci del mare per satollarli?
23 Yahweh said to Moses, 'Is the arm of Yahweh so short? You shal see whether the promise I havemade to you comes true or not.'	23 Rispose a lui il Signore: È ella forse spossata la mano del Signore? Tu vedrai or ora, se laparola mia sarà messa ad effetto.
24 Moses went out and told the people what Yahweh had said. Then he col ected seventy of thepeople's elders and stationed them round the Tent.	24 Andò adunque Mosè, e raunati i settanta uomini degli anziani d'Israele (i quali fece starepresso al tabernacolo) riferì al popolo le parole del Signore.
25 Yahweh descended in the cloud. He spoke to him and took some of the spirit that was on him andput it on the seventy elders. When the spirit came on them they prophesied -- but only once.	25 E il Signore discese nella nuvola, e gli parlò, e prese dello spirito, che era in Mosè, e lodiede a' settanta. Ed entrato che fu in essi lo spirito, profetarono, e non finirono maipiù.
26 Two men had stayed back in the camp; one was called Eldad and the other Medad. The spirit camedown on them; though they had not gone to the Tent, their names were enrol ed among the rest. These began toprophesy in the camp.	26 Or due di questi erano rimasi negli alloggiamenti, de' quali uno chiamavasi Eldad, e l'altroMedad, e lo spirito si posò sopra di loro: perché anch'essi erano stati messi nel ruolo, manon erano andati al tabernacolo.
27 A young man ran to tel Moses this. 'Look,' he said, 'Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.'	27 E mentre essi profetavano nel campo, corse un ragazzo, e ne recò la nuova a Mosè, dicendo:Eldad e Medad profetano negli alloggiamenti.
28 Joshua son of Nun, who had served Moses since he was a boy, spoke up and said, 'My lord Moses,stop them!'	28 Subitamente Giosuè figliuolo di Nun, ministro di Mosè, eletto tra molti, disse: Signor mioMosè, non permetter loro tal cosa.
29 Moses replied, 'Are you jealous on my account? If only al Yahweh's people were prophets, andYahweh had given them his spirit!'	29 Ma questi disse: Per qual motivo ti prendi tu gelosia per amor mio? Chi mi darà, che profetitutto il popolo, e che il Signore dia a lui il suo spirito?
30 Moses then went back to the camp with the elders of Israel.	30 E Mosè, e i seniori d'Israele tornarono agli alloggiamenti.
31 A wind, sent by Yahweh, started blowing from the sea bringing quails which it deposited on thecamp. They lay for a distance of a day's march either side of the camp, two cubits thick on the ground.	31 E un vento mandato dal Signore trasportò seco di là dal mare delle quaglie, e le fe' cadereverso gli alloggiamenti da ogni parte intorno al campo, per lo spazio d'una giornata dicammino, e svolazzavan per l'aria all'altezza di due cubiti sopra la terra.
32 The people were up al that day and night and all the next day collecting quails: the least gatheredby anyone was ten homer; then they spread them out round the camp.	32 Si mosse allora il popolo, e per tutto quel giorno, e la notte, e il dì seguente raunaronoquelli che n'ebbero il meno, dieci cori di quaglie: e le seccarono intorno aglialloggiamenti.
33 The meat was still between their teeth, not even chewed, when Yahweh's anger was aroused by thepeople. Yahweh struck them with a very great plague.	33 Egli no avean tuttora tra' denti le carni, e non era venuto meno quel cibo, ed ecco chel'ira del Signore accesa contro del popolo, lo percosse con flagello stragrande.
34 The name given to this place was Kibroth-ha-Taavah, because it was there that they buried thepeople who had indulged their greed.	34 Donde fu chiamato quel luogo i Sepolcri della concupiscenza: perché qui vi seppellirò lagente d'ingorda brama. Partiti di poi da' sepolcri della concupiscenza, giunsero ad Haserot,e ivi fermaronsi.
35 From Kibroth-ha-Taavah the people set out for Hazeroth, and at Hazeroth they pitched camp.
