Sirach 46

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 Mighty in war was Joshua son of Nun, successor to Moses in the prophetic office, who well deservedhis name, and was a great saviour of the chosen people, wreaking vengeance on the enemies who opposedhim, and so bringing Israel into its inheritance.	1 Forte in guerra fu Gesù figlio di Nave, successore di Mosè come profeta: egli fu grande, come dice il suo nome.
2 How splendid he was when, arms uplifted, he brandished his sword against cities!	2 Egli fu più che grande nel salvare gli eletti di Dio, nell'abbattere i nemici che insorgevano, per conquistare l'eredità d'Israele.
3 Who had ever shown such determination as his? He himself led the battles of the Lord.	3 Quanta gloria acquistò col tenere alta la mano e brandire la spada contro le città?
4 Was not the sun held back by his hand, and one day drawn out into two?	4 Così, chi gli potè resistere? Infatti il Signore stesso gli metteva nelle mani i nemici.
5 He called on the Most High, the Mighty One, while pressing the enemies from all directions, and thegreat Lord answered him with hard and violent hailstones.	5 E non fu il suo zelo che fermò il sole in modo che un sol giorno divenne quasi due?
6 He fel on that enemy nation, and at the Descent destroyed al resistance to make the nationsacknowledge his warlike prowess and that he was waging war on behalf of the Lord.	6 Invocò l'Altissimo potente mentre attaccava i nemici da ogni parte, e lo ascoltò il grande e santo Dio, il potentissimo, con sassi di grandine.
7 For he was a fol ower of the Mighty One, in the time of Moses showing his devotion, he and Caleb sonof Jephunneh, by opposing the whole community, by preventing the people from sinning, and by silencing themutters of rebel ion.	7 Egli si scagliò sulla gente nemica e nella discesa sterminò gli avversari,
8 Hence these two alone were preserved out of six hundred thousand men on the march, and broughtinto their inheritance, into a land where milk and honey flow.	8 per far conoscere alle nazioni la potenza del Signore, e che non è facile combattere contro Dio. Egli segui di dietro il Potente,
9 And the Lord conferred strength on Caleb too, which stayed by him into old age, so that he could investthe highlands of the country which his descendants kept as their inheritance,	9 e al tempo di Mosè fece opera benefica, egli e Caleb figlio di Iefone, stando saldi contro i nemici, allontanando il popolo dal peccato, e sedando le maliziose mormorazioni.
10 so that every Israelite might see that it is good to fol ow the Lord.	10 Ed essi furono quei due che usciron salvi dal pericolo, dei seicento mila uomini a piedi, per introdurre il popolo nell'eredità, nella terra che stilla latte e miele.
11 The Judges too, each when he was cal ed, all men whose hearts were never disloyal, who neverturned their backs on the Lord -- may their memory be blessed!	11 E allo stesso Caleb il Signore diede la forza, e sino alla vecchiaia egli si mantenne robusto, in modo da salire nei luoghi elevati della regione che i suoi posteri ebbero in ere dità;
12 May their bones flourish again from the tomb, and may the names of those il ustrious men be worthilyborne by their sons!	12 affinchè tutti i figli d'Israele riconoscessero quanto è bene obbedire al santo Iddio.
13 Samuel was the beloved of his Lord; prophet of the Lord, he instituted the kingdom, and anointedrulers over his people.	13 E i Giudici, ciascuno col suo nome, dei quali non fu corrotto il cuore e che non si allontanarono dal Signore,
14 By the Law of the Lord he judged the assembly, and the Lord watched over Jacob.	14 che sia bene detta la loro memoria, le loro ossa rifioriscano dalle loro tombe,
15 By his loyalty he was recognised as a prophet, by his words he was known to be a trustworthy seer.	15 duri in eterno il loro nome e si perpetui nei loro figli la gloria di quei santi uomini.
16 He cal ed on the Lord, the Mighty One, when his enemies pressed in from all directions, by offering asucking lamb.	16 Caro al Signore suo Dio fu Samuele, profeta del Signore, fondò la monarchia e unse i principi del suo popolo.
17 And the Lord thundered from heaven, and made his voice heard in a rolling peal;	17 Secondo la legge del Signore giudicò l'Adunanza, e Dio guardò Giacobbe, e per la sua fedeltà fu riconosciuto come profeta.
18 he massacred the leaders of the enemy, and all the rulers of the Philistines.	18 E fu trovato fedele nelle sue parole, avendo veduto il Dio della luce.
19 Before the time of his everlasting rest he bore witness to the Lord and his anointed, 'Of no property,not even a pair of sandals, have I ever deprived a soul.' Nor did anyone accuse him.	19 E invocò il Signore onnipotente, mentre i nemici lo stringevan da ogni parte, offrendo l'agnello immacolato,
20 And, having fal en asleep, he prophesied again, warning the king of his end; he spoke from the depthsof the earth in prophecy, to blot out the wickedness of the people.	20 e il Signore tuonò dal cielo, con gran fragore fece sentir la sua voce.
	21 E schiacciò i principi di Tiro, e tutti i duci dei Filistei.
	22 E, avanti che terminasse la sua vita nel mondo, protestò, dinanzi al Signore ed al suo Unto, di non aver ricevuto da nessuno danaro e nemmeno calzari, e nessuno potè accusarlo.
	23 Poi s'addormentò, e fece conoscere al re e gli mostrò la fine della sua vita, ed alzò la voce di sotto terra per profetizzare la distruzione dell'empietà del popolo.
