Sirach 46

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Mighty in war was Joshua son of Nun, successor to Moses in the prophetic office, who well deservedhis name, and was a great saviour of the chosen people, wreaking vengeance on the enemies who opposedhim, and so bringing Israel into its inheritance.	1 Vaillant à la guerre, tel fut Josué fils de Nûn, successeur de Moïse dans l'office prophétique,lui qui, méritant bien son nom, se montra grand pour sauver les élus, pour châtier les ennemis révoltés et installerIsraël dans son territoire.
2 How splendid he was when, arms uplifted, he brandished his sword against cities!	2 Qu'il était glorieux lorsque, les bras levés, il brandissait l'épée contre les villes!
3 Who had ever shown such determination as his? He himself led the battles of the Lord.	3 Quel homme avant lui avait eu sa fermeté? Il a mené lui-même les combats du Seigneur.
4 Was not the sun held back by his hand, and one day drawn out into two?	4 N'est-ce pas sur son ordre que le soleil s'arrêta et qu'un seul jour en devint deux?
5 He called on the Most High, the Mighty One, while pressing the enemies from all directions, and thegreat Lord answered him with hard and violent hailstones.	5 Il invoqua le Très-Haut, le Puissant, alors qu'il pressait les ennemis de toutes parts, et leSeigneur grand l'exauça en lançant des grêlons d'une puissance inouïe.
6 He fel on that enemy nation, and at the Descent destroyed al resistance to make the nationsacknowledge his warlike prowess and that he was waging war on behalf of the Lord.	6 Il fondit sur la nation ennemie et dans la descente il anéantit les assaillants: pour faireconnaître aux nations la force de ses armes et qu'il menait la guerre devant le Seigneur.
7 For he was a fol ower of the Mighty One, in the time of Moses showing his devotion, he and Caleb sonof Jephunneh, by opposing the whole community, by preventing the people from sinning, and by silencing themutters of rebel ion.	7 Car il s'attacha au Tout-Puissant, au temps de Moïse il manifesta sa piété, ainsi que Caleb,fils de Yephunné, en s'opposant à la multitude, en empêchant le peuple de pécher, en faisant taire les murmuresmauvais.
8 Hence these two alone were preserved out of six hundred thousand men on the march, and broughtinto their inheritance, into a land where milk and honey flow.	8 Eux deux furent seuls épargnés sur 600.000 hommes de pied, pour être introduits dansl'héritage, dans la terre où coulent le lait et le miel.
9 And the Lord conferred strength on Caleb too, which stayed by him into old age, so that he could investthe highlands of the country which his descendants kept as their inheritance,	9 Et le Seigneur accorda à Caleb la force qui lui resta jusqu'à sa vieillesse, il lui fit gravir leshauteurs du pays que sa descendance garda en héritage,
10 so that every Israelite might see that it is good to fol ow the Lord.	10 afin que tout Israël voie qu'il est bon de suivre le Seigneur.
11 The Judges too, each when he was cal ed, all men whose hearts were never disloyal, who neverturned their backs on the Lord -- may their memory be blessed!	11 Les Juges, chacun selon son appel, tous hommes dont le coeur ne fut pas infidèle et qui nese détournèrent pas du Seigneur, que leur souvenir soit en bénédiction!
12 May their bones flourish again from the tomb, and may the names of those il ustrious men be worthilyborne by their sons!	12 Que leurs ossements refleurissent dans la tombe, que leurs noms, portés de nouveau,conviennent aux fils de ces hommes illustres.
13 Samuel was the beloved of his Lord; prophet of the Lord, he instituted the kingdom, and anointedrulers over his people.	13 Samuel fut le bien-aimé de son Seigneur; prophète du Seigneur, il établit la royauté etdonna l'onction aux chefs établis sur son peuple.
14 By the Law of the Lord he judged the assembly, and the Lord watched over Jacob.	14 Dans la loi du Seigneur il jugea l'assemblée et le Seigneur visita Jacob.
15 By his loyalty he was recognised as a prophet, by his words he was known to be a trustworthy seer.	15 Par sa fidélité il fut reconnu prophète, par ses discours il se montra un voyant véridique.
16 He cal ed on the Lord, the Mighty One, when his enemies pressed in from all directions, by offering asucking lamb.	16 Il invoqua le Seigneur tout-puissant, quand les ennemis le pressaient de toutes parts, enoffrant un agneau de lait.
17 And the Lord thundered from heaven, and made his voice heard in a rolling peal;	17 Et du ciel le Seigneur fit retentir son tonnerre, à grand fracas il fit entendre sa voix;
18 he massacred the leaders of the enemy, and all the rulers of the Philistines.	18 il anéantit les chefs de l'ennemi et tous les princes des Philistins.
19 Before the time of his everlasting rest he bore witness to the Lord and his anointed, 'Of no property,not even a pair of sandals, have I ever deprived a soul.' Nor did anyone accuse him.	19 Avant l'heure de son éternel repos, il rendit témoignage devant le Seigneur et son oint: "Deses biens, pas même de ses sandales, je n'ai dépouillé personne." Et personne ne l'accusa.
20 And, having fal en asleep, he prophesied again, warning the king of his end; he spoke from the depthsof the earth in prophecy, to blot out the wickedness of the people.	20 Après s'être endormi il prophétisa encore et annonça au roi sa fin; du sein de la terre iléleva la voix pour prophétiser, pour effacer l'iniquité du peuple.
