Sirach 46

NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 Mighty in war was Joshua son of Nun, successor to Moses in the prophetic office, who well deservedhis name, and was a great saviour of the chosen people, wreaking vengeance on the enemies who opposedhim, and so bringing Israel into its inheritance.	1 Josué, filho de Nun, foi um valente na guerra. Sucedeu Moisés entre os profetas; foi ilustre, tão ilustre como o nome que trazia,
2 How splendid he was when, arms uplifted, he brandished his sword against cities!	2 muito ilustre salvador dos eleitos de Deus, para derrubar os inimigos que se levantavam, e para conquistar a herança de Israel.
3 Who had ever shown such determination as his? He himself led the battles of the Lord.	3 Que glória não alcançou ele em levantar as suas mãos, e em brandir a espada contra as cidades!
4 Was not the sun held back by his hand, and one day drawn out into two?	4 Quem pôde enfrentá-lo? Pois o Senhor mesmo lhe trazia os seus inimigos.
5 He called on the Most High, the Mighty One, while pressing the enemies from all directions, and thegreat Lord answered him with hard and violent hailstones.	5 Não deteve ele o sol, em sua cólera? Não se tornou um só dia tão longo como dois?
6 He fel on that enemy nation, and at the Descent destroyed al resistance to make the nationsacknowledge his warlike prowess and that he was waging war on behalf of the Lord.	6 Ele invocou o Altíssimo todo-poderoso, atacando os inimigos de todos os lados: o Deus grande e santo o atendeu com uma chuva de pedras de grande força.
7 For he was a fol ower of the Mighty One, in the time of Moses showing his devotion, he and Caleb sonof Jephunneh, by opposing the whole community, by preventing the people from sinning, and by silencing themutters of rebel ion.	7 Investiu impetuosamente contra as hostes inimigas, e despedaçou-as na descida do vale,
8 Hence these two alone were preserved out of six hundred thousand men on the march, and broughtinto their inheritance, into a land where milk and honey flow.	8 para que as nações conhecessem o poder de Deus, e soubessem que não é fácil combater contra Deus, ele seguiu sempre o Todo-poderoso.
9 And the Lord conferred strength on Caleb too, which stayed by him into old age, so that he could investthe highlands of the country which his descendants kept as their inheritance,	9 No tempo em que Moisés ainda vivia, praticou um ato de piedade com Caleb, filho de Jefoné, permanecendo firme contra o inimigo, impedindo o povo de pecar, e abafando a murmuração excitada pela malícia.
10 so that every Israelite might see that it is good to fol ow the Lord.	10 Dentre um número de seiscentos mil homens de pé, esses dois foram escolhidos e poupados da morte, para levar o povo à sua herança, nessa terra onde mana leite e mel.
11 The Judges too, each when he was cal ed, all men whose hearts were never disloyal, who neverturned their backs on the Lord -- may their memory be blessed!	11 O Senhor deu força a Caleb; até a velhice permaneceu ele vigoroso, para subir a um lugar elevado na terra (prometida), que a sua descendência recebeu como herança,
12 May their bones flourish again from the tomb, and may the names of those il ustrious men be worthilyborne by their sons!	12 para que todos os israelitas reconhecessem que é bom obedecer ao Deus santo.
13 Samuel was the beloved of his Lord; prophet of the Lord, he instituted the kingdom, and anointedrulers over his people.	13 Em seguida, vieram os juízes, cada um (designado) pelo seu nome, aqueles cujos corações não se perverteram, e que não se afastaram do Senhor.
14 By the Law of the Lord he judged the assembly, and the Lord watched over Jacob.	14 Que a sua memória seja abençoada, e seus ossos floresçam em seus sepulcros!
15 By his loyalty he was recognised as a prophet, by his words he was known to be a trustworthy seer.	15 Que seu nome permaneça eternamente, e passe aos seus filhos com a glória desses santos homens!
16 He cal ed on the Lord, the Mighty One, when his enemies pressed in from all directions, by offering asucking lamb.	16 Amado pelo Senhor seu Deus, Samuel, o profeta do Senhor, instituiu um novo governo, e ungiu príncipes entre o seu povo.
17 And the Lord thundered from heaven, and made his voice heard in a rolling peal;	17 Julgou a assembléia segundo a lei do Senhor. E o Deus de Jacó o visitou. Por sua fidelidade ele se mostrou verdadeiramente profeta,
18 he massacred the leaders of the enemy, and all the rulers of the Philistines.	18 e foi fiel em suas palavras, porque viu o Deus da luz.
19 Before the time of his everlasting rest he bore witness to the Lord and his anointed, 'Of no property,not even a pair of sandals, have I ever deprived a soul.' Nor did anyone accuse him.	19 Invocou o Deus todo-poderoso, ofereceu-lhe um cordeiro sem mácula, quando os seus inimigos o perseguiam por todos os lados.
20 And, having fal en asleep, he prophesied again, warning the king of his end; he spoke from the depthsof the earth in prophecy, to blot out the wickedness of the people.	20 O Senhor trovejou do céu, fazendo ouvir sua voz com grande estrondo.
	21 Destroçou os príncipes de Tiro, e todos os chefes dos filisteus.
	22 Antes de terminar a sua vida neste mundo, tomou como testemunha o Senhor e seu Cristo, de que não tinha recebido dinheiro de pessoa alguma, nem mesmo uma sandália, e não achou ninguém que o acusasse.
	23 Depois disso, adormeceu e apareceu ao rei, e lhe mostrou seu fim (próximo); levantou a sua voz do seio da terra para profetizar a destruição da impiedade do povo.
