Sirach 46

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA MARTINI
1 Mighty in war was Joshua son of Nun, successor to Moses in the prophetic office, who well deservedhis name, and was a great saviour of the chosen people, wreaking vengeance on the enemies who opposedhim, and so bringing Israel into its inheritance.	1 Forte in guerra fu Gesù figliuolo di Nave successore di Mosè nel dono di profezia, egli fu grande come porta il suo nome.
2 How splendid he was when, arms uplifted, he brandished his sword against cities!	2 Egli fu più che grande nel salvare gli eletti di Dio, nel domare i nemici, che se gli opponevano, e nel conquistare per Israele la sua eredità.
3 Who had ever shown such determination as his? He himself led the battles of the Lord.	3 Quanta gloria acquistò egli in tenendo alta la mano, e vibrando la spada contro quella città!
4 Was not the sun held back by his hand, and one day drawn out into two?	4 Chi avanti a lui combattè in tal guisa? Imperocché il Signore stesso condusse nelle mani di lui i nemici.
5 He called on the Most High, the Mighty One, while pressing the enemies from all directions, and thegreat Lord answered him with hard and violent hailstones.	5 Lo zelo di lui non fermò egli il sole, onde un sol giorno fu come due?
6 He fel on that enemy nation, and at the Descent destroyed al resistance to make the nationsacknowledge his warlike prowess and that he was waging war on behalf of the Lord.	6 Mentre da tutte parti i nemici lo combattevano, egli invocò l'Altissimo onnipotente, e il grande, e santo Iddio lo esaudì mandando grandine furiosa di pietre.
7 For he was a fol ower of the Mighty One, in the time of Moses showing his devotion, he and Caleb sonof Jephunneh, by opposing the whole community, by preventing the people from sinning, and by silencing themutters of rebel ion.	7 Egli si scagliò impetuosamente sopra la gente nimica, e sterminò gli avversarj nella discesa,
8 Hence these two alone were preserved out of six hundred thousand men on the march, and broughtinto their inheritance, into a land where milk and honey flow.	8 Affinchè conoscesser le genti, la possanza di Dio, e come non è agevol cosa il combattere contro di lui. Egli seguitò sempre l'onnipotente;
9 And the Lord conferred strength on Caleb too, which stayed by him into old age, so that he could investthe highlands of the country which his descendants kept as their inheritance,	9 Egli a tempo di Mosè insieme con Caleb figliuolo di Jephone fece una buona opera, risoluti a mostrar la faccia al nimico, trattenendo il popolo dal peccare, e sedando le maliziose mormorazioni.
10 so that every Israelite might see that it is good to fol ow the Lord.	10 Ed eglino faron que' due, i quali del numero di secento mila fanti usciròn salvi d'ogni pericolo per condurre il popolo al possesso della terra, che scorre latte, e miele.
11 The Judges too, each when he was cal ed, all men whose hearts were never disloyal, who neverturned their backs on the Lord -- may their memory be blessed!	11 E allo stesso Caleb, il Signore diede gran valore, e anche nella vecchiaia egli fu sempre robusto, onde salì a quel luogo eminente nella terra promessa, il quale fa il retaggio della sua stirpe:
12 May their bones flourish again from the tomb, and may the names of those il ustrious men be worthilyborne by their sons!	12 Affinchè tutti i figliuoli d'Israele vedessero come buona cosa ella è l'ubbidire al santo Iddio.
13 Samuel was the beloved of his Lord; prophet of the Lord, he instituted the kingdom, and anointedrulers over his people.	13 E i giudici notati ciascuno pel raro nome, il cuore de' quali non fu cattivo, perché non si allontanarono dal Signore,
14 By the Law of the Lord he judged the assembly, and the Lord watched over Jacob.	14 Sia in benedizione la loro memoria, e le loro ossa di là rifioriscano, dove riposano,
15 By his loyalty he was recognised as a prophet, by his words he was known to be a trustworthy seer.	15 E duri in eterno il loro nome, e passi a' loro figliuoli colla gloria di que' santi uomini.
16 He cal ed on the Lord, the Mighty One, when his enemies pressed in from all directions, by offering asucking lamb.	16 Samuele caro al Signore Dio suo, profeta del Signore fondò nuovo impero, ed unse i principi del popol suo.
17 And the Lord thundered from heaven, and made his voice heard in a rolling peal;	17 Egli giudicò la sinagoga secondo la legge del Signore, e Iddio visitò Giacobbe, ed egli per la sua fedeltà fu riconosciuto per profeta.
18 he massacred the leaders of the enemy, and all the rulers of the Philistines.	18 E si vide come egli era fedele nelle sue parole, e come avea veduto il Dio della luce:
19 Before the time of his everlasting rest he bore witness to the Lord and his anointed, 'Of no property,not even a pair of sandals, have I ever deprived a soul.' Nor did anyone accuse him.	19 Egli invocò il Signore onnipotente mentre i nemici lo stringevano da tutte parti, e offerse agnello immacolato.
20 And, having fal en asleep, he prophesied again, warning the king of his end; he spoke from the depthsof the earth in prophecy, to blot out the wickedness of the people.	20 E il Signore tuonò dall cielo, e tra grandi strepiti fece udir la sua voce,
	21 E conquise i principi di tiro, e tutti i duci de' Filistei:
	22 E prima che terminasse di vivere, e si partisse dal mondo protestò dinanzi al Signore, e dinanzi al suo Cristo, come da verun uomo non avea preso denaro, e nemmeno un paio di calzari, e nissun uomo potè accusarlo.
	23 Indi si addormentò, e predisse, e notificò al re il fine della sua vita, e alzò la sua voce di sotto terra profetando la distruzione dell'empietà del popolo.
