1 Yes, your judgements are great and impenetrable, which is why uninstructed souls have gone astray.	1 Grandi sono i tuoi giudizi, o Signore, e ineffabili le tue parole; per questo le anime senza istru­zione caddero in errore.
2 While the wicked supposed they had a holy nation in their power, they themselves lay prisoners of thedark, in the fetters of long night, confined under their own roofs, banished from eternal providence.	2 Mentre gli empi eran persuasi di poter opprimere il popolo santo, inca­tenati nelle tenebre, inceppati nella lunga notte, chiusi dentro le case, giacevano esclusi dall'e­terna Provvidenza.
3 While they thought to remain unnoticed with their secret sins, curtained by dark forgetfulness, theywere scattered in fearful dismay, terrified by apparitions.	3 E mentre credevano di poter restar nasco­sti nei loro segreti peccati, sotto il tenebroso velo dell'oblio, furon dispersi, orrendamente spaven­tati e agitati dal più grande sbi­gottimento.
4 The hiding place sheltering them could not ward off their fear; terrifying noises echoed round them;and gloomy, grim-faced spectres haunted them.	4 E nemmeno la spe­lonca che li chiudeva li preserva­va dalla paura, perchè scendevan dei rumori a spaventarli, e lugubri spettri, loro apparendo, incutevan terrore.
5 No fire had power enough to give them light, nor could the brightly blazing stars il uminate that dreadfulnight.	5 E non v'era nessun fuoco capace di far loro lume, e nemmeno il chiaro splendore del­le stelle poteva illuminare quella orrenda notte.
6 The only light for them was a great, spontaneous blaze -- a fearful sight to see! And in their terror,once that sight had vanished, they thought what they had seen more terrible than ever.	6 Ma appariva loro un certo improvviso bagliore che faceva paura, e, spaventati da quella visione che mal vedevano, stimavan peggiori le cose che comparivano.
7 Their magical il usions were powerless now, and their claims to intel igence were ignominiouslyconfounded;	7 E le ciurmerie dell'arte magica eran derise, e la vantata sapienza fu screditata con ignominia.
8 for those who promised to drive out fears and disorders from sick souls were now themselves sick withludicrous fright.	8 Infatti quelli che promettevano di cacciar le paure e le in quietudini dagli animi ab­battuti, essi stessi languivano scherniti, pieni di spavento.
9 Even when there was nothing frightful to scare them, the vermin creeping past and the hissing ofreptiles filled them with panic;	9 E sebbene nulla di mostruoso li at­terrisse, sbigottiti dal passar delle bestie e dal fischiar dei serpenti, morivan di tremarella, rifiutan­do perfino di veder l'aria, che nessuno può schivare.
10 they died convulsed with fright, refusing even to look at empty air, which cannot be eluded anyhow!	10 Così la malvagità colla paura dà testi­monianza per la sua condanna, sempre presagisce cose terribili per l'agitata coscienza.
11 Wickedness is confessedly very cowardly, and it condemns itself; under pressure from conscience italways assumes the worst.	11 Infatti la paura non è altro che l'abban­dono dei soccorsi della ragione.
12 Fear, indeed, is nothing other than the failure of the help offered by reason;	12 E quanto meno s'aspetta, dal di dentro, tanto più s'ingrandisce l'ignota causa da cui viene il tor­mento.
13 the less you rely within yourself on this, the more alarming it is not to know the cause of yoursuffering.	13 Quelli poi, in quella not­te veramente d'impotenza e sbu­cata addosso a loro dal più pro­fondo dell'inferno, assopiti nel medesimo sonno,
14 And they, al locked in the same sleep, while that darkness lasted -- which was in fact quite powerlessand had issued from the depths of equal y powerless Hades-	14 ora erano agitati dallo spavento dei mostri, ora, venivan meno per l'abbatti­mento dell'animo, colti da im­provviso e inaspettato terrore.
15 were now chased by monstrous spectres, now paralysed by the fainting of their souls; for a sudden,unexpected terror had attacked them.	15 Inoltre, se uno di loro cadeva, era fermato e chiuso in prigione, senza catene.
16 And thus, whoever it might be that fel there stayed clamped to the spot in this prison without bars.	16 Chiunque fosse, agricoltore, pastore, o operaio occupato in lavori agricoli, era oppresso da inevitabile necessi­tà.
17 Whether he was ploughman or shepherd, or somebody at work in the desert, he was stil overtakenand suffered the inevitable fate, for al had been bound by the one same chain of darkness.	17 La medesima catena delle tenebre teneva tutti avvinti: il vento che soffiava, il soave canto degli uccelli tra i folti rami degli alberi, l'impetuoso precipitar del­l'acqua corrente,
18 The soughing of the wind, the tuneful noise of birds in the spreading branches, the measured beat ofwater in its powerful course, the headlong din of rocks cascading down,	18 il forte rumo­re di pietre cadenti, l'invisibile scorrazzar di animali saltellanti, la potente voce di bestie mug­genti, e l'eco, ripercossa dai più alti monti, li faceva venir meno dalla paura.
19 the unseen course of bounding animals, the roaring of the most savage of wild beasts, the echorebounding from the clefts in the mountains, all held them paralysed with fear.	19 Tutto il mondo era illuminato da vivida luce, ed era occupato senza ostacoli nei suoi lavori.
20 For the whole world shone with the light of day and, unhindered, went about its work;	20 Soltanto sopra di loro pesava la profonda notte, imagine delle tenebre che poi dovevan piombar loro addosso. Ed essi erano a se stessi più gravosi di quelle tenebre.
21 over them alone there spread a heavy darkness, image of the dark that would receive them. Butheavier than the darkness was the burden they were to themselves.
