NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Yes, your judgements are great and impenetrable, which is why uninstructed souls have gone astray.	1 Grandes e inenarrables son tus juicios, por eso, las almas ignorantes se extraviaron.
2 While the wicked supposed they had a holy nation in their power, they themselves lay prisoners of thedark, in the fetters of long night, confined under their own roofs, banished from eternal providence.	2 Porque cuando los impíos pensaban que podían oprimir a una nación santa, yacían encadenados en las tinieblas, prisioneros de una larga noche, encerrados bajo sus techos, excluidos de la providencia eterna.
3 While they thought to remain unnoticed with their secret sins, curtained by dark forgetfulness, theywere scattered in fearful dismay, terrified by apparitions.	3 Ellos pensaban mantenerse ocultos con sus pecados secretos, bajo el oscuro velo del olvido, pero fueron dispersados, presa de terrible espanto, y aterrorizados por fantasmas.
4 The hiding place sheltering them could not ward off their fear; terrifying noises echoed round them;and gloomy, grim-faced spectres haunted them.	4 Porque el reducto que los protegía no los preservaba del miedo; ruidos estremecedores resonaban a su alrededor y se les aparecían espectros lúgubres, de rostro sombrío.
5 No fire had power enough to give them light, nor could the brightly blazing stars il uminate that dreadfulnight.	5 Ningún fuego tenía fuerza suficiente para alumbrar, ni el resplandor brillante de las estrellas lograba iluminar aquella horrible noche.
6 The only light for them was a great, spontaneous blaze -- a fearful sight to see! And in their terror,once that sight had vanished, they thought what they had seen more terrible than ever.	6 Solamente brillaba para ellos una masa de fuego que se encendía por sí misma, sembrando el terror, y una vez desaparecida aquella visión, quedaban aterrados y consideraban lo que habían visto peor de lo que era.
7 Their magical il usions were powerless now, and their claims to intel igence were ignominiouslyconfounded;	7 Los artificios de la magia resultaban ineficaces, y su pretendida ciencia quedaba vergonzosamente desmentida,
8 for those who promised to drive out fears and disorders from sick souls were now themselves sick withludicrous fright.	8 porque los que prometían liberar las almas enfermas de temores y sobresaltos, estaban, ellos mismos, enfermos de un temor ridículo.
9 Even when there was nothing frightful to scare them, the vermin creeping past and the hissing ofreptiles filled them with panic;	9 Aunque nada terrorífico les infundiera temor, horrorizados por el paso de los bichos y el silbido de los reptiles,
10 they died convulsed with fright, refusing even to look at empty air, which cannot be eluded anyhow!	10 se morían de miedo, y hasta rehusaban mirar el aire, del que nadie puede escapar.
11 Wickedness is confessedly very cowardly, and it condemns itself; under pressure from conscience italways assumes the worst.	11 Porque la maldad es cobarde y su propio testimonio la condena: acosada por la conciencia, imagina siempre lo peor.
12 Fear, indeed, is nothing other than the failure of the help offered by reason;	12 El miedo, en efecto, no es sino el abandono de la ayuda que da la reflexión:
13 the less you rely within yourself on this, the more alarming it is not to know the cause of yoursuffering.	13 cuanto menos se cuenta con esa seguridad interior, tanto más grave se considera ignorar la causa del tormento.
14 And they, al locked in the same sleep, while that darkness lasted -- which was in fact quite powerlessand had issued from the depths of equal y powerless Hades-	14 Durante esa noche verdaderamente impotente, salida de las profundidades del Abismo impotente, sumergidos en un mismo sueño,
15 were now chased by monstrous spectres, now paralysed by the fainting of their souls; for a sudden,unexpected terror had attacked them.	15 eran perseguidos a la vez por espectros monstruosos y paralizados por el desfallecimiento de su alma, porque un terror repentino e inesperado los había invadido.
16 And thus, whoever it might be that fel there stayed clamped to the spot in this prison without bars.	16 Así, cualquiera que caía en ese estado quedaba prisionero, encerrado en esa prisión sin hierros.
17 Whether he was ploughman or shepherd, or somebody at work in the desert, he was stil overtakenand suffered the inevitable fate, for al had been bound by the one same chain of darkness.	17 Ya fuera labrador o pastor, o trabajara en lugares solitarios, al ser sorprendido, tenía que soportar la ineludible necesidad,
18 The soughing of the wind, the tuneful noise of birds in the spreading branches, the measured beat ofwater in its powerful course, the headlong din of rocks cascading down,	18 porque todos estaban atados por una misma cadena de tinieblas. El silbido del viento, el canto melodioso de los pájaros en la arboleda, el ruido cadencioso de las aguas en su impetuoso correr,
19 the unseen course of bounding animals, the roaring of the most savage of wild beasts, the echorebounding from the clefts in the mountains, all held them paralysed with fear.	19 el violento estruendo de las rocas cayendo en avalanchas, la invisible carrera de animales encabritados, el rugido de las fieras más salvajes, el eco que retumba en los huecos de las montañas, todo los llenaba de terror y los paralizaba.
20 For the whole world shone with the light of day and, unhindered, went about its work;	20 Porque el mundo entero estaba iluminado por una luz resplandeciente y se dedicaba libremente a sus trabajos;
21 over them alone there spread a heavy darkness, image of the dark that would receive them. Butheavier than the darkness was the burden they were to themselves.	21 solamente sobre ellos se extendía una pesada noche, imagen de las tinieblas que les estaban reservadas. Pero más que de las tinieblas, ellos sentían el peso de sí mismos.
