NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Yes, your judgements are great and impenetrable, which is why uninstructed souls have gone astray.	1 Grandi e imperscrutabili sono i tuoi giudizi: per questo le anime senza istruzione furono tratte in errore.
2 While the wicked supposed they had a holy nation in their power, they themselves lay prisoners of thedark, in the fetters of long night, confined under their own roofs, banished from eternal providence.	2 Persuasi di poter opprimere il popolo santo, gli iniqui giacevano inerti, prigionieri delle tenebre, avvolti da una lunga notte, rinchiusi dentro le case, lungi dalla provvidenza eterna.
3 While they thought to remain unnoticed with their secret sins, curtained by dark forgetfulness, theywere scattered in fearful dismay, terrified by apparitions.	3 Mentre pensavano di restare nascosti con gli occulti peccati sotto l'oscuro velo dell'oblio, furono dispersi, colti da orribile spavento e sconvolti da fantasmi.
4 The hiding place sheltering them could not ward off their fear; terrifying noises echoed round them;and gloomy, grim-faced spectres haunted them.	4 Neppure il nascondiglio che li accoglieva poté preservarli dalla paura, ma rumori sconvolgenti risuonavano intorno a loro e apparivano spettri minacciosi dai volti tristi.
5 No fire had power enough to give them light, nor could the brightly blazing stars il uminate that dreadfulnight.	5 Nessun fuoco, per quanto potente, aveva la forza di far luce, né le luci fulgide degli astri potevano illuminare quella orribile notte.
6 The only light for them was a great, spontaneous blaze -- a fearful sight to see! And in their terror,once that sight had vanished, they thought what they had seen more terrible than ever.	6 Appariva loro soltanto un fuoco spontaneo, pieno di timore; atterriti da quello spettacolo non conosciuto stimavano ancora peggiori le cose che vedevano.
7 Their magical il usions were powerless now, and their claims to intel igence were ignominiouslyconfounded;	7 Le risorse dell'arte magica giacevano a terra e vergognosa era la confutazione della scienza dell'arrogante.
8 for those who promised to drive out fears and disorders from sick souls were now themselves sick withludicrous fright.	8 Quanti promettevano di cacciare i timori e i turbamenti dell'anima abbattuta, gli stessi erano malati di paura ridicola.
9 Even when there was nothing frightful to scare them, the vermin creeping past and the hissing ofreptiles filled them with panic;	9 Anche se niente di spaventoso li intimoriva, spaventati dal passaggio delle bestie e dal sibilo dei serpenti,
10 they died convulsed with fright, refusing even to look at empty air, which cannot be eluded anyhow!	10 morivano di paura e si rifiutavano di guardare l'aria, che in nessun modo si può evitare.
11 Wickedness is confessedly very cowardly, and it condemns itself; under pressure from conscience italways assumes the worst.	11 La malvagità, quando è condannata, si rivela particolarmente vile; oppressa dalla coscienza, suppone sempre il peggio.
12 Fear, indeed, is nothing other than the failure of the help offered by reason;	12 Il timore infatti non è altro che l'abbandono degli aiuti del ragionamento:
13 the less you rely within yourself on this, the more alarming it is not to know the cause of yoursuffering.	13 quanto minore è internamente l'attesa degli aiuti, tanto più si valuta l'ignoranza della causa che procura il tormento.
14 And they, al locked in the same sleep, while that darkness lasted -- which was in fact quite powerlessand had issued from the depths of equal y powerless Hades-	14 Ma essi, durante quella notte veramente impotente e uscita dai recessi degli impotenti inferi, addormentati di un medesimo sonno,
15 were now chased by monstrous spectres, now paralysed by the fainting of their souls; for a sudden,unexpected terror had attacked them.	15 ora erano agitati da spettri mostruosi, ora erano paralizzati per l'abbandono dell'anima, poiché li colse un improvviso e inaspettato timore.
16 And thus, whoever it might be that fel there stayed clamped to the spot in this prison without bars.	16 E così chiunque, cadendo là dov'era, si trovava rinchiuso in un carcere senza catenaccio:
17 Whether he was ploughman or shepherd, or somebody at work in the desert, he was stil overtakenand suffered the inevitable fate, for al had been bound by the one same chain of darkness.	17 chiunque fosse, agricoltore o pastore o operaio che si affatica nella solitudine, sorpreso dalle tenebre, subiva l'ineluttabile destino,
18 The soughing of the wind, the tuneful noise of birds in the spreading branches, the measured beat ofwater in its powerful course, the headlong din of rocks cascading down,	18 perché tutti furono legati all'unica catena delle tenebre. Il sibilo del vento, o il melodioso canto di uccelli tra i rami degli alberi frondosi, o il mormorio dell'acqua che scorre con forza,
19 the unseen course of bounding animals, the roaring of the most savage of wild beasts, the echorebounding from the clefts in the mountains, all held them paralysed with fear.	19 o il forte fragore di massi cadenti, o la corsa invisibile di animali saltellanti, o la voce di selvagge fiere ruggenti, o l'eco ripercossa dalle cavità dei monti, li paralizzava per lo spavento.
20 For the whole world shone with the light of day and, unhindered, went about its work;	20 Tutto il mondo era illuminato da una splendida luce e si dedicava senza impedimento ai lavori;
21 over them alone there spread a heavy darkness, image of the dark that would receive them. Butheavier than the darkness was the burden they were to themselves.	21 solo su di essi si stendeva una notte profonda, immagine delle tenebre che stavano per avvolgerli. Ma essi erano a se stessi più pesanti delle tenebre.
