NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 Yes, your judgements are great and impenetrable, which is why uninstructed souls have gone astray.	1 Em verdade, grandes e impenetráveis são vossos juízos, Senhor; por isso as almas grosseiras caíram no erro.
2 While the wicked supposed they had a holy nation in their power, they themselves lay prisoners of thedark, in the fetters of long night, confined under their own roofs, banished from eternal providence.	2 Por terem acreditado que podiam oprimir a santa nação, os ímpios, prisioneiros das trevas e encarcerados por uma longa noite, jaziam encerrados nas suas casas, tentando escapar à vossa incessante vigilância.
3 While they thought to remain unnoticed with their secret sins, curtained by dark forgetfulness, theywere scattered in fearful dismay, terrified by apparitions.	3 Depois de terem imaginado que, com seus secretos pecados, ficariam escondidos sob o sombrio véu do esquecimento, eles se viram dispersados, como presa de um terrível espanto, e amedrontados por alucinações.
4 The hiding place sheltering them could not ward off their fear; terrifying noises echoed round them;and gloomy, grim-faced spectres haunted them.	4 Mesmo o canto mais afastado em que se abrigavam não os punha ao abrigo do terror: ruídos aterradores ressoavam em torno deles, e taciturnos espectros de lúgubre aspecto lhes apareciam.
5 No fire had power enough to give them light, nor could the brightly blazing stars il uminate that dreadfulnight.	5 Nenhuma chama, por intensa que fosse, chegava a iluminar. E a luz brilhante dos astros era impotente para alumiar esta noite sombria.
6 The only light for them was a great, spontaneous blaze -- a fearful sight to see! And in their terror,once that sight had vanished, they thought what they had seen more terrible than ever.	6 Mas aparecia-lhes de súbito nada mais que uma chama aterradora, e, tomados de terror por esta visão fugitiva, julgavam essas aparições mais terríveis ainda.
7 Their magical il usions were powerless now, and their claims to intel igence were ignominiouslyconfounded;	7 A arte dos mágicos se mostrou ilusória, e esta sabedoria, a que eles pretendiam, evidenciou-se vergonhosamente como falsidade.
8 for those who promised to drive out fears and disorders from sick souls were now themselves sick withludicrous fright.	8 Aqueles que se jactavam de banir das almas doentes o terror e a perturbação, eram eles mesmos
9 Even when there was nothing frightful to scare them, the vermin creeping past and the hissing ofreptiles filled them with panic;	9 Mesmo quando nada de mais grave os aterrorizava, a passagem dos animais e o silvo das serpentes punham-nos fora de si, e eles morriam de medo. Recusavam até mesmo contemplar essa atmosfera à qual nada podia escapar;
10 they died convulsed with fright, refusing even to look at empty air, which cannot be eluded anyhow!	10 porque a maldade, condenada por seu próprio testemunho, é medrosa, e, sob o peso da consciência, supõe sempre o pior,
11 Wickedness is confessedly very cowardly, and it condemns itself; under pressure from conscience italways assumes the worst.	11 pois o temor não é outra coisa que a privação dos socorros trazidos pela reflexão,
12 Fear, indeed, is nothing other than the failure of the help offered by reason;	12 porque, quanto menor for em sua alma a esperança de auxílio, tanto mais penosa é a ignorância daquilo de que se tem medo.
13 the less you rely within yourself on this, the more alarming it is not to know the cause of yoursuffering.	13 Eles, durante essa noite de impotência, saída dos recantos do Hades impotente, dormiam num mesmo sono,
14 And they, al locked in the same sleep, while that darkness lasted -- which was in fact quite powerlessand had issued from the depths of equal y powerless Hades-	14 agitados, de um lado, pelo terror dos espectros, e paralisados, de outro, pelo desfalecimento da alma; pois era um pavor repentino e inesperado o que se abatera sobre eles.
15 were now chased by monstrous spectres, now paralysed by the fainting of their souls; for a sudden,unexpected terror had attacked them.	15 E todo aquele que caía sem força, ficava como que preso e encerrado num cárcere sem ferros.
16 And thus, whoever it might be that fel there stayed clamped to the spot in this prison without bars.	16 Fosse ele camponês ou pastor, ou o operário que se afadiga sozinho no seu trabalho, uma vez surpreendido, tinha de suportar a inevitável necessidade, porque todos estavam ligados por uma mesma cadeia de trevas.
17 Whether he was ploughman or shepherd, or somebody at work in the desert, he was stil overtakenand suffered the inevitable fate, for al had been bound by the one same chain of darkness.	17 O silvo do vento, o canto harmonioso dos passarinhos nos ramos espessos, o murmúrio da água correndo precipitadamente, o estrondo das rochas que se despenhavam,
18 The soughing of the wind, the tuneful noise of birds in the spreading branches, the measured beat ofwater in its powerful course, the headlong din of rocks cascading down,	18 a carreira invisível dos animais que saltavam, os urros dos animais selvagens, o eco que repercutia nas cavidades dos montes: tudo os paralisava de terror.
19 the unseen course of bounding animals, the roaring of the most savage of wild beasts, the echorebounding from the clefts in the mountains, all held them paralysed with fear.	19 Enquanto o mundo inteiro era alumiado de uma brilhante luz, e sem obstáculo se entregava às suas ocupações,
20 For the whole world shone with the light of day and, unhindered, went about its work;	20 somente sobre eles se estendia uma pesada noite, imagem das trevas que mais tarde os deviam acolher; e eram para si mesmos um peso mais insuportável que esta escuridão.
21 over them alone there spread a heavy darkness, image of the dark that would receive them. Butheavier than the darkness was the burden they were to themselves.
