NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 But you, our God, are kind and true, slow to anger, governing the universe with mercy.	1 Ma tu, o nostro Dio, sei beni­gno e verace, paziente, e con mi­sericordia tutto governi.
2 Even if we sin, we are yours, since we acknowledge your power, but we wil not sin, knowing we countas yours.	2 Anche se pecchiamo siamo tuoi, ricono­scendo la tua grandezza, e se non pecchiamo siamo sicuri d'essere annoverati fra i tuoi.
3 To know you is indeed the perfect virtue, and to know your power is the root of immortality.	3 E certo la giustizia perfetta consiste nel co­noscerti, e comprendere la giu­stizia e la tua potenza è radice dell'immortalità.
4 We have not been duped by inventions of misapplied human skil , or by the sterile work of painters, byfigures daubed with assorted colours,	4 Così non ci tra­viarono nell'errore le male arti dell'umana invenzione, nè il vano artifizio di ombreggiata pittura, nè effigie scolpita di diversi co­lori.
5 the sight of which sets fools yearning and hankering for the lifeless form of an unbreathing image.	5 La vista di ciò eccita la pas­sione dello sciocco, invaghito del1 'esanime figura d 'una, in orta immagine.
6 Lovers of evil and worthy of such hopes are those who make them, those who want them and thosewho worship them.	6 Affezionati al male, son degni di sperare in tali cose, e chi le fa e chi le ama e chi le onora.
7 Take a potter, now, laboriously working the soft earth, shaping each object for us to use. Out of theself-same clay, he models vessels intended for a noble use and those for a contrary purpose, al alike: but whichof these two uses each wil have is for the potter himself to decide.	7 Un vasaio, maneggiando la molle creta, con molta fatica, ne forma or questo or quel vaso a nostro servizio, collo stesso fan­go fa vasi destinati a nobili usi, ed anche quelli destinati a tutt'altro; e dell'uso a cui debbon servire quei vasi ne è giudice il vasaio.
8 Then -- il -- spent effort!-from the same clay he models a futile god, although so recently made out ofearth himself and shortly to return to what he was taken from, when asked to give back the soul that has beenlent to him.	8 E poi, con vana fatica, fa, del medesimo fango, un dio, lui che, da poco fatto di terra, tra poco ritorna a quello da cui fu tratto, quando gli sarà diman­data l'anima, che ha come in pre­stito.
9 Even so, he does not worry about having to die or about the shortness of his life, but strives to outdothe goldsmiths and silversmiths, imitates the bronzeworkers, and prides himself on model ing counterfeits.	9 Ma egli non si dà pena del­la sua fatica, nè della brevità della sua vita, ma tenta di far concorrenza agli orefici e agli ar­gentieri, imita i bronzisti, e pone la sua gloria nel formare cose inuti­li.
10 Ashes, his heart; more vile than earth, his hope; more wretched than clay, his life!	10 Cenere è il suo cuor, la sua spe­ranza è più vana della terra, la sua vita è più vile del fango;
11 For he has misconceived the One who has model ed him, who breathed an active soul into him andinspired a living spirit.	11 perchè non riconosce colui che l'ha fatto, che gli ha ispirata l'anima, che agisce, e soffiò in lui lo spirito del­la vita.
12 What is more, he looks on this life of ours as a kind of game, and our time here like a fair, ful of bargains. 'However foul the means,' he says, 'a man must make a living.'	12 Essi han creduto che la nostra vita sia un gioco, e che tutta l'occupazione della vita ab­bia per scopo il guadagno, e che si debba guadagnare con tutti i mezzi, anche col delitto.
13 He, more than any other, knows he is sinning, he who from one earthy stuff makes both brittle potsand idols.	13 Ben sa di peccare sopra ogni altro chi dalla (medesima) mota fa fragili vasi e idoli scolpiti.
14 But most foolish, more pitiable even than the soul of a little child, are the enemies who once playedthe tyrant with your people,	14 Son tutti insensati e disgraziati e oltremo­do superbi di spirito i nemici del tuo popolo e chi li governa;
15 and have taken al the idols of the heathen for gods; these can use neither their eyes for seeing northeir nostrils for breathing the air nor their ears for hearing nor the fingers on their hands for handling nor theirfeet for walking.	15 perchè hanno stimati come dèi tutti di idoli delle genti, i quali non han l'uso degli occhi per vedere, nè delle narici per respirare, nè degli orecchi per udire, nè dei diti delle mani per toccare, ed anche i loro piedi sono incapaci di muoversi.
16 They have been made, you see, by a human being, modelled by a being whose own breath isborrowed. No man can model a god to resemble himself;	16 Un uomo li ha fatti, li ha formati uno che ha lo spirito in prestito. Nessun uomo potrà mai fare un dio simile a se stesso.
17 subject to death, his impious hands can produce only something dead. He himself is worthier thanthe things he worships; he wil at least have lived, but never they.	17 Egli, essendo mortale, con empie mani forma una cosa morta. Ma egli è da più di quelli che adora, perchè egli almeno ha la vita, sebbene mortale, ma quelli non l'hanno mai avuta.
18 And they worship even the most loathsome of animals, worse than the rest in their degree ofstupidity,	18 Inoltre essi adorano gli animali più ributtanti, che, paragonati agli altri privi di ragione, sono i peggiori.
19 without a trace of beauty -- if that is what is attractive in animals- and excluded from God's praisesand blessing.	19 Ed anche nell'aspetto nessuno in questi animali può vedere qualche cosa di bello, per­chè furono esclusi dall'approva­zione e dalla benedizioni di Dio.
