Wisdom 15

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 But you, our God, are kind and true, slow to anger, governing the universe with mercy.	1 Pero tú, Dios nuestro, eres bondadoso y fiel, eres paciente y todo lo administras con misericordia.
2 Even if we sin, we are yours, since we acknowledge your power, but we wil not sin, knowing we countas yours.	2 Aun cuando pecamos, pertenecemos a ti, ya que reconocemos tu soberanía; pero no pecaremos, sabiendo que nos has contado como tuyos.
3 To know you is indeed the perfect virtue, and to know your power is the root of immortality.	3 Porque conocerte a ti es la perfecta justicia y reconocer tu soberanía es la raíz de la inmortalidad.
4 We have not been duped by inventions of misapplied human skil , or by the sterile work of painters, byfigures daubed with assorted colours,	4 No nos han extraviado las invenciones de un arte humano perverso ni el esfuerzo estéril de los pintores de quimeras: esas figuras embadurnadas de colores abigarrados,
5 the sight of which sets fools yearning and hankering for the lifeless form of an unbreathing image.	5 cuya contemplación excita la pasión de los necios y les hace desear la figura inanimada de una imagen sin vida.
6 Lovers of evil and worthy of such hopes are those who make them, those who want them and thosewho worship them.	6 ¡Amantes del mal y dignos de tales esperanzas son los que las fabrican, las desean y las adoran!
7 Take a potter, now, laboriously working the soft earth, shaping each object for us to use. Out of theself-same clay, he models vessels intended for a noble use and those for a contrary purpose, al alike: but whichof these two uses each wil have is for the potter himself to decide.	7 Así un alfarero amasa laboriosamente la tierra blanda y modela cada uno de los objetos que usamos. Con la misma arcilla modela indistintamente objetos destinados a un uso noble y otros que tendrán un destino contrario; pero es el alfarero el que decide cuál será la función de cada uno de ellos.
8 Then -- il -- spent effort!-from the same clay he models a futile god, although so recently made out ofearth himself and shortly to return to what he was taken from, when asked to give back the soul that has beenlent to him.	8 Después, con un esfuerzo mal empleado, utiliza la misma arcilla para modelar un falso dios, y el que hace eso es un hombre que poco antes nació de la tierra y dentro de poco volverá a la tierra de donde fue sacado, cuando se le pida que devuelva su alma.
9 Even so, he does not worry about having to die or about the shortness of his life, but strives to outdothe goldsmiths and silversmiths, imitates the bronzeworkers, and prides himself on model ing counterfeits.	9 Sin embargo, en vez de preocuparse de que pronto va a morir y de la brevedad de su vida, rivaliza con los orfebres y plateros, imita a los forjadores de bronce y se enorgullece de fabricar lo que es falso.
10 Ashes, his heart; more vile than earth, his hope; more wretched than clay, his life!	10 Su corazón no es más que ceniza, su esperanza es más vil que la tierra, y su vida más despreciable que la arcilla.
11 For he has misconceived the One who has model ed him, who breathed an active soul into him andinspired a living spirit.	11 Porque desconoce a aquel que lo modeló, al que le infundió un alma capaz de actuar y le transmitió un soplo vital.
12 What is more, he looks on this life of ours as a kind of game, and our time here like a fair, ful of bargains. 'However foul the means,' he says, 'a man must make a living.'	12 El piensa que nuestra vida es un juego y la existencia, una feria para obtener ganancias: «Es necesario, dice, ganar por todos los medios, aunque sean malos».
13 He, more than any other, knows he is sinning, he who from one earthy stuff makes both brittle potsand idols.	13 Porque él sabe bien que peca más que cualquier otro cuando de una materia terrestre fabrica objetos frágiles y estatuas.
14 But most foolish, more pitiable even than the soul of a little child, are the enemies who once playedthe tyrant with your people,	14 Pero los más insensatos de todos, y más infelices que el alma de un niño, son los enemigos que oprimieron a tu pueblo,
15 and have taken al the idols of the heathen for gods; these can use neither their eyes for seeing northeir nostrils for breathing the air nor their ears for hearing nor the fingers on their hands for handling nor theirfeet for walking.	15 ya que tuvieron por dioses a todos los ídolos de las naciones, que no pueden valerse de los ojos para ver, ni de las narices para respirar, ni de los oídos para oír, ni de los dedos de las manos para tocar, y cuyos pies no sirven para caminar.
16 They have been made, you see, by a human being, modelled by a being whose own breath isborrowed. No man can model a god to resemble himself;	16 Porque es un hombre el que hizo esos ídolos, uno que recibió en préstamo el aliento, el que los modeló, pero ningún hombre puede modelar un dios semejante a sí mismo:
17 subject to death, his impious hands can produce only something dead. He himself is worthier thanthe things he worships; he wil at least have lived, but never they.	17 siendo mortal, con sus manos impías, sólo puede producir una obra muerta. El vale más que los objetos que adora, ya que él tiene vida, pero aquellos no la tendrán jamás.
18 And they worship even the most loathsome of animals, worse than the rest in their degree ofstupidity,	18 Ellos adoran incluso a los animales más repugnantes, que superan en estupidez a todos los demás,
19 without a trace of beauty -- if that is what is attractive in animals- and excluded from God's praisesand blessing.	19 a los que ni siquiera tienen la belleza que hace atrayentes a otros animales, y están excluidos del elogio y la bendición de Dios.
