Wisdom 15

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 But you, our God, are kind and true, slow to anger, governing the universe with mercy.	1 Ma tu, o Dio nostro, sei benigno e fedele, sei longanime e tutto governi con misericordia.
2 Even if we sin, we are yours, since we acknowledge your power, but we wil not sin, knowing we countas yours.	2 Perchè, anche se pecchiamo, noi slam tuoi, conoscendo la tua potenza; ma non peccheremo, sapendo d'esser annoverati tra i tuoi!
3 To know you is indeed the perfect virtue, and to know your power is the root of immortality.	3 Il conoscer te è perfetta giustizia, e il saper la tua giustizia e potenza è radice d’immortalità.
4 We have not been duped by inventions of misapplied human skil , or by the sterile work of painters, byfigures daubed with assorted colours,	4 Non ci ha sedotti noi nè maliziosa invenzione di uomini, nè sterile lavoro d'ombreggiata pittura, un'immagine impiastrata di vari colori,
5 the sight of which sets fools yearning and hankering for the lifeless form of an unbreathing image.	5 la cui vista desta nell'insensato la passione, onde s'innamora della figura senz'anima d’una morta immagine.
6 Lovers of evil and worthy of such hopes are those who make them, those who want them and thosewho worship them.	6 Amanti del male, degni son di sperare in tali cose cosi quel che le fabbricano, come coloro che le amano e adorano.
7 Take a potter, now, laboriously working the soft earth, shaping each object for us to use. Out of theself-same clay, he models vessels intended for a noble use and those for a contrary purpose, al alike: but whichof these two uses each wil have is for the potter himself to decide.	7 I1 vasaio invero, impastando con fatica la molle terra, forma ogni sorta di vasi a nostro servizio, e dalla stessa argilla egli forma i vasi che servono a nobili usi e quelli, parimenti, che son tutto il contrario: qual poi abbia ad esser l'uso de' [singoli vasi], n'è giudice il vasaio.
8 Then -- il -- spent effort!-from the same clay he models a futile god, although so recently made out ofearth himself and shortly to return to what he was taken from, when asked to give back the soul that has beenlent to him.	8 Cosi anche, con male spesa fatica, plasma un dio dalla medesima argilla, egli che da poco è nato dalla terra e ritornerà dopo poco a quella [terra] donde fu tratto, quando gli sarà ridomandata l'anima che ha in prestito.
9 Even so, he does not worry about having to die or about the shortness of his life, but strives to outdothe goldsmiths and silversmiths, imitates the bronzeworkers, and prides himself on model ing counterfeits.	9 Ma egli non si preoccupa ch'è per esaurirsi, nè che ha breve la vita; ma rivaleggia con gli orefici e gli argentieri e imita i bronzisti e pone la sua gloria nel formar [riproduzioni] vane.
10 Ashes, his heart; more vile than earth, his hope; more wretched than clay, his life!	10 Cenere è il suo cuore, e più vile della terra la sua speranza, e più spregevole della creta la sua vita.
11 For he has misconceived the One who has model ed him, who breathed an active soul into him andinspired a living spirit.	11 Perchè ignora colui che l'ha formato e gli ha ispirato un'anima attiva e soffiato in lui uno spirito di vita;
12 What is more, he looks on this life of ours as a kind of game, and our time here like a fair, ful of bargains. 'However foul the means,' he says, 'a man must make a living.'	12 ma pensa che uno spasso sia la nostra vita; e l’esistenza un gran mercato da guadagno, e che bisogna fare acquisti come che sia, anche col male.
13 He, more than any other, knows he is sinning, he who from one earthy stuff makes both brittle potsand idols.	13 Egli sa infatti che più d'ogni altro pecca, formando dalla [medesima] materia argillosa fragili vasi e scolpite immagini.
14 But most foolish, more pitiable even than the soul of a little child, are the enemies who once playedthe tyrant with your people,	14 Ma insensati tutti e più meschini dell'anima d'un superbo sono i nemici del tuo popolo, i suoi oppressori.
15 and have taken al the idols of the heathen for gods; these can use neither their eyes for seeing northeir nostrils for breathing the air nor their ears for hearing nor the fingers on their hands for handling nor theirfeet for walking.	15 Perchè tutti gl'idoli delle genti essi ebber per dèi, che [pur] non han nè l'uso degli occhi per vedere, nè narici per aspirar l'aria, nè orecchi per udire, nè dita delle mani per palpare, e i cui piedi sono incapaci di camminare!
16 They have been made, you see, by a human being, modelled by a being whose own breath isborrowed. No man can model a god to resemble himself;	16 Un uomo invero li fece, e chi aveva avuto in prestito lo spirito li plasmò. Or non c'è uomo che possa fare un dio simile a sè;
17 subject to death, his impious hands can produce only something dead. He himself is worthier thanthe things he worships; he wil at least have lived, but never they.	17 ma, essendo mortale, una cosa morta e, fa con l'empie [sue] mani. Egli pertanto è da più degli oggetti che adora, perchè lui almeno, pur essendo mortale, ebbe vita, ma quelli non mai!
18 And they worship even the most loathsome of animals, worse than the rest in their degree ofstupidity,	18 Ma anche gli animali più ripugnanti essi adorano, che quanto a brutalità son peggiori degli altri.
19 without a trace of beauty -- if that is what is attractive in animals- and excluded from God's praisesand blessing.	19 E neppure all’aspetto può alcuno vedere In questi animali qualcosa di buono; ma sfuggirono alla lode di Dio e alla sua benedizione.
