NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 For your imperishable spirit is in everything!	1 Quanto è benigno e soave, o Signore, il tuo spirito in tutte le cose!
2 And thus, gradual y, you correct those who offend; you admonish and remind them of how they havesinned, so that they may abstain from evil and trust in you, Lord.	2 Per questo tu castighi i traviati a poco per volta, li ripren­di dei loro falli e li ammonisci, affinchè, messa da parte la mali­zia, credano in te, o Signore.
3 The ancient inhabitants of your holy land	3 Gli antichi abitatori della tua terra santa tu li avevi in orrore,
4 you hated for their loathsome practices, their acts of sorcery, and unholy rites.	4 perchè detestabili davanti a te eran le opere che facevano con malie ed empi sacrifizi:
5 Those ruthless murderers of children, those eaters of entrails at feasts of human flesh and of blood,those initiates of secret brotherhoods,	5 uccide­vano senza pietà i loro figlioli, mangiavano le viscere degli uo­mini, bevevano il sangue in mez­zo alla tua sacra terra.
6 those murderous parents of defenceless beings, you determined to destroy at our ancestors' hands,	6 Quei ge­nitori carnefici di anime indifese tu li volesti distruggere per ma­no dei nostri padri,
7 so that this land, dearer to you than any other, might receive a worthy colony of God's children.	7 affinchè ri­cevesse la degna colonia dei figli di Dio quella terra a te cara sopra tutte.
8 Even so, since these were human, you treated them leniently, sending hornets as forerunners of yourarmy, to exterminate them little by little.	8 Ma anche ad essi, come ad uomini, avesti riguardo, e mandasti, precursori del tuo esercito, le vespe, affinchè li ster­minassero a poco a poco.
9 Not that you were unable to hand the godless over to the upright in pitched battle or destroy them atonce by savage beasts or one harsh word;	9 Non perchè tu fossi impotente ad as­soggettare colla guerra gli empi ai giusti, o a sterminarli d'un col­po con bestie feroci e con dura parola.
10 but, by carrying out your sentences gradual y, you gave them a chance to repent, although you knewthat they were inherently evil, innately wicked,	10 Ma punendoli grada­tamente davi luogo al pentimen­to, pur non ignorando quanto fosse scellerata quella nazione, e come fosse diventata natura la loro malizia, e che i loro pen­sieri non si potevano mai più cambiare.
11 and fixed in their cast of mind; for they were a race accursed from the beginning. Nor was it from aweof anyone that you let their sins go unpunished.	11 Era infatti una razza ma­ledetta fin da principio, e tu non per timore di altri lasciavi im­ puniti i loro peccati.
12 For who is there to ask, 'What have you done?' Or who is there to disagree with your sentence? Whoto arraign you for destroying nations which you have created? Who to confront you by championing the wicked?	12 Chi potrà dirti: « Che hai fatto? » Chi oserà opporsi alla tua sentenza, chi ver­rà dinanzi a te come difensore di uomini empi? E chi ti potrà imputare lo sterminio di nazioni da te create?
13 For there is no god, other than you, who cares for every one, to whom you have to prove that yoursentences have been just.	13 Non v'è infatti altro Dio fuori di te, che hai cura di tutto, da dover mostrare che non è ingiusta la tua sentenza.
14 No more could any king or despot chal enge you over those whom you have punished.	14 Nè re, nè tiranno davanti a te potrà chieder conto di quelli che hai fatto perire.
15 For, being upright yourself, you rule the universe uprightly, and hold it as incompatible with yourpower to condemn anyone who has not deserved to be punished.	15 Ma siccome tu sei giusto, con giustizia regoli ogni cosa, e condannare chi non deve essere condannato lo tieni come indegno della tua potenza.
16 For your strength is the basis of your saving justice, and your sovereignty over al makes you lenientto al .	16 Così il tuo potere è principio di giu­stizia, e siccome sei il Signore di tutti, con tutti sei indulgente.
17 You show your strength when people will not believe in your absolute power, and you confound anyinsolence in those who do know it.	17 Pe­rò fai mostra della tua potenza quando non sei creduto perfetto nella forza, e punisci l'audacia di chi non ti conosce.
18 But you, control ing your strength, are mild in judgement, and govern us with great lenience, for youhave only to wil , and your power is there.	18 Tu, padrone della forza, giudichi con tranquilli­tà, e con gran rispetto disponi di noi. E' infatti in tua mano il potere quando vuoi.
19 By acting thus, you have taught your people that the upright must be kindly to his fel ows, and youhave given your children the good hope that after sins you wil grant repentance.	19 Con tali opere tu insegnasti al tuo popo­lo che bisogna esser giusti ed umani, e desti ai tuoi figli buone speranze, perchè, quando giu­dichi, tra i peccati dài luogo a penitenza.
20 For, if with such care and indulgence you have punished your children's enemies, though doomed todeath, and have given them time and place to be rid of their wickedness,	20 Se infatti i nemici dei tuoi servi e i degni di morte tu li punisti con tanti riguardi, dando loro tempo e luogo di po­ter cessare dalla loro malizia,
21 with what exact attention have you not judged your children, to whose ancestors, by oaths andcovenants, you made such generous promises?	21 con quanta cautela avrai giu­dicati i tuoi figli, ai padri dei qual1 giurasti un patto d'ottime pro­messe?
22 Thus, you instruct us, when you punish our enemies in moderation, that we should reflect on yourkindness when we judge, and, when we are judged, we should look for mercy.	22 Se dunque correggi noi, con molti colpi flagelli i nostri nemici, affinchè, ripensandoci, giudichiamo della tua bontà, e speriamo la tua clemenza quando verremo giudicati.
23 And this is why people leading foolish and wicked lives were tortured by you with their ownabominations;	23 Per questo quelli che vissero da insensati e da ingiusti li straziasti coi più grandi tormenti per mezzo delle cose da loro adorate.
24 for they had strayed too far on the paths of error by taking the vilest and most despicable of animalsfor gods, being deluded like sil y little children.	24 Essi per lungo tempo traviarono nella via dell'errore, stimando dèi quel­li che fra gli animali sono i più vili, e, vivendo come dei ragaz­zi insensati,
25 So, as to children with no sense, you gave them a sentence making fools of them.	25 per questo come a ra­gazzi insensati, infliggesti loro un castigo da scherno.
26 Those, however, who would not take warning from a mocking reproof were soon to endure asentence worthy of God.	26 Ma quelli che non si corressero agli scher­ni e alle grida provarono un ca­stigo degno di Dio.
27 The creatures that made them suffer and against which they protested, those very creatures that theyhad taken for gods and by which they were punished they saw in their true light; and he whom hitherto they hadrefused to know, they realised was true God. And this is why the final condemnation fell on them.	27 Essi infat­ti, quando con indignazione sof­frivano per mezzo di quelli che credevano dèi, mentre da essi erano straziati, videro e riconobbero per vero Dio quello che pri­ma ricusavan di riconoscere: per questo piombò su di loro la finale condanna.
