Wisdom 12

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 For your imperishable spirit is in everything!	1 porque tu espíritu incorruptible está en todas las cosas.
2 And thus, gradual y, you correct those who offend; you admonish and remind them of how they havesinned, so that they may abstain from evil and trust in you, Lord.	2 Por eso reprendes poco a poco a los que caen, y los amonestas recordándoles sus pecados, para que se aparten del mal y crean en ti, Señor.
3 The ancient inhabitants of your holy land	3 A los antiguos habitantes de tu Tierra santa
4 you hated for their loathsome practices, their acts of sorcery, and unholy rites.	4 los aborreciste por sus prácticas detestables, actos de hechicería y ritos impíos.
5 Those ruthless murderers of children, those eaters of entrails at feasts of human flesh and of blood,those initiates of secret brotherhoods,	5 A esos crueles asesinos de niños, a esos devoradores de entrañas en banquetes de carne humana y de sangre, a esos iniciados en ritos sangrientos,
6 those murderous parents of defenceless beings, you determined to destroy at our ancestors' hands,	6 a esos padres asesinos de seres indefensos, decidiste hacerlos perecer por las manos de nuestros padres,
7 so that this land, dearer to you than any other, might receive a worthy colony of God's children.	7 para que esta tierra, la más querida por ti entre todas, recibiera una digna colonia de hijos de Dios.
8 Even so, since these were human, you treated them leniently, sending hornets as forerunners of yourarmy, to exterminate them little by little.	8 Pero aun a ellos, por ser hombres, los trataste con indulgencia, y enviaste avispas como precursores de tu ejército, para que los exterminaran gradualmente.
9 Not that you were unable to hand the godless over to the upright in pitched battle or destroy them atonce by savage beasts or one harsh word;	9 Ciertamente, tú hubieras podido, en una batalla campal, entregar a los impíos en manos de los justos, o bien aniquilarlos de un solo golpe por medio de animales feroces o por una sentencia inexorable.
10 but, by carrying out your sentences gradual y, you gave them a chance to repent, although you knewthat they were inherently evil, innately wicked,	10 En cambio, ejecutando poco a poco tu sentencia, les dabas oportunidad de arrepentirse, aunque no ignorabas que su origen era perverso y su malicia innata y que jamás cambiarían su manera de pensar,
11 and fixed in their cast of mind; for they were a race accursed from the beginning. Nor was it from aweof anyone that you let their sins go unpunished.	11 porque una maldición pesaba sobre esa raza desde el principio. Y no fue por temor de nadie que les ofrecías dejar impunes sus pecados.
12 For who is there to ask, 'What have you done?' Or who is there to disagree with your sentence? Whoto arraign you for destroying nations which you have created? Who to confront you by championing the wicked?	12 ¿Quién podrá decirte: «¿Qué has hecho?». ¿Quién se opondrá a tu sentencia? ¿Quién te hará algún cargo por destruir a las naciones que tú creaste? ¿Quién se levantará contra ti como vengador de los injustos?
13 For there is no god, other than you, who cares for every one, to whom you have to prove that yoursentences have been just.	13 Porque, fuera de ti, no hay otro Dios que cuide de todos, a quien tengas que probar que tus juicios no son injustos;
14 No more could any king or despot chal enge you over those whom you have punished.	14 ni tampoco hay rey ni soberano que pueda enfrentarse contigo para defender a los que tú has castigado.
15 For, being upright yourself, you rule the universe uprightly, and hold it as incompatible with yourpower to condemn anyone who has not deserved to be punished.	15 Como eres justo, riges el universo con justicia, y consideras incompatible con tu poder condenar a quien no merece ser castigado.
16 For your strength is the basis of your saving justice, and your sovereignty over al makes you lenientto al .	16 Porque tu fuerza es el principio de tu justicia, y tu dominio sobre todas las cosas te hace indulgente con todos.
17 You show your strength when people will not believe in your absolute power, and you confound anyinsolence in those who do know it.	17 Tú muestras tu fuerza cuando alguien no cree en la plenitud de tu poder, y confundes la temeridad de aquellos que la conocen.
18 But you, control ing your strength, are mild in judgement, and govern us with great lenience, for youhave only to wil , and your power is there.	18 Pero, como eres dueño absoluto de tu fuerza, juzgas con serenidad y nos gobiernas con gran indulgencia, porque con sólo quererlo puedes ejercer tu poder.
19 By acting thus, you have taught your people that the upright must be kindly to his fel ows, and youhave given your children the good hope that after sins you wil grant repentance.	19 Al obrar así, tú enseñaste a tu pueblo que el justo debe ser amigo de los hombres y colmaste a tus hijos de una feliz esperanza, porque, después del pecado, das lugar al arrepentimiento.
20 For, if with such care and indulgence you have punished your children's enemies, though doomed todeath, and have given them time and place to be rid of their wickedness,	20 Si a los enemigos de tus hijos, que eran reos de muerte, los castigaste con tanta consideración y miramiento, dándoles el tiempo y el lugar para apartarse de su maldad,
21 with what exact attention have you not judged your children, to whose ancestors, by oaths andcovenants, you made such generous promises?	21 ¡con cuántas más precauciones habrás juzgado a tus hijos, tú que con juramentos y alianzas, hiciste a sus padres tan magníficas promesas!
22 Thus, you instruct us, when you punish our enemies in moderation, that we should reflect on yourkindness when we judge, and, when we are judged, we should look for mercy.	22 Así, cuando castigas a nuestros enemigos con moderación, nos instruyes a fin de que, al juzgar a los otros, recordemos tu bondad y, al ser juzgados, contemos con tu misericordia.;
23 And this is why people leading foolish and wicked lives were tortured by you with their ownabominations;	23 Por eso, a los que en su locura habían llevado una vida injusta, los atormentaste con sus propias abominaciones,
24 for they had strayed too far on the paths of error by taking the vilest and most despicable of animalsfor gods, being deluded like sil y little children.	24 porque se habían extraviado demasiado lejos, por los caminos del error, tomando por dioses a los animales más viles y despreciables y dejándose engañar como niños sin juicio.
25 So, as to children with no sense, you gave them a sentence making fools of them.	25 Entonces, como a niños que no razonan, les enviaste un castigo irrisorio.
26 Those, however, who would not take warning from a mocking reproof were soon to endure asentence worthy of God.	26 Pero aquellos que no se enmendaron con esa corrección irrisoria soportarán un juicio digno de Dios.
27 The creatures that made them suffer and against which they protested, those very creatures that theyhad taken for gods and by which they were punished they saw in their true light; and he whom hitherto they hadrefused to know, they realised was true God. And this is why the final condemnation fell on them.	27 Exasperados por los animales que los hacían sufrir y viéndose castigados por aquellos a quienes tenían por dioses, reconocieron como Dios verdadero al que antes se negaban a conocer. Por eso se abatió sobre ellos todo el rigor de la condena. Es así, que cayó sobre ellos el peor de los castigos.
