1 For your imperishable spirit is in everything!	1 Quanto è benigno, e sovave, o Signore, il tuo spirito in tutte le cose!
2 And thus, gradual y, you correct those who offend; you admonish and remind them of how they havesinned, so that they may abstain from evil and trust in you, Lord.	2 Onde tu gli erranti appoco appoco correggi, e de' loro falli gli ammonisci, e parli loro, affinchè messa da parte la malizia credano in te, o Signore.
3 The ancient inhabitants of your holy land	3 Imperocché tu avevi in abbominazione quelli abitatori antichi della tua terra santa,
4 you hated for their loathsome practices, their acts of sorcery, and unholy rites.	4 Perché orrende cose facevano contro di te co' lor veneficj, e sagrifizj scelerati,
5 Those ruthless murderers of children, those eaters of entrails at feasts of human flesh and of blood,those initiates of secret brotherhoods,	5 Che uccidevano senza pietà i propri figliuoli, e divoravano le viscere degli uomini, e beveano il sangue in mezzo alla sacrata tua terra.
6 those murderous parents of defenceless beings, you determined to destroy at our ancestors' hands,	6 Questi genitori, autori della strage di quelle creature abbandonate, tu volesti distruggerli per le mani de' padri nostri,
7 so that this land, dearer to you than any other, might receive a worthy colony of God's children.	7 Affinchè la terra cara a te più, che tutte le altre, accogliesse la degna colonia de' figliuoli di Dio.
8 Even so, since these were human, you treated them leniently, sending hornets as forerunners of yourarmy, to exterminate them little by little.	8 Ma anche a questi come uomini avesti riguardo, e mandasti quai battitori del tuo esercito le vespe, le quali appoco appoco gli sterminassero.
9 Not that you were unable to hand the godless over to the upright in pitched battle or destroy them atonce by savage beasts or one harsh word;	9 Non perché tu non potessi soggettare a mano armata gli empj ai giusti, o tutti sterminarli per mezzo di bestie feroci, o con una dura parola:
10 but, by carrying out your sentences gradual y, you gave them a chance to repent, although you knewthat they were inherently evil, innately wicked,	10 Ma gradatamente punendoli lascia vi luogo alla penitenza, benché non ignorassi tu come quella nazione era scellerata, e connaturale a quelli era la malizia, e come non potevan cangiarsi i loro pensieri giammai.
11 and fixed in their cast of mind; for they were a race accursed from the beginning. Nor was it from aweof anyone that you let their sins go unpunished.	11 Perocché eran quelli una progenie maledetta fin da principio; e tu risparmiando i loro peccati non facevi per timore di alcuno.
12 For who is there to ask, 'What have you done?' Or who is there to disagree with your sentence? Whoto arraign you for destroying nations which you have created? Who to confront you by championing the wicked?	12 Imperocché chi dirà a te: Che è quello, che tu hai fatto? O chi si opporrà a' tuoi giudizj? o chi verrà a te davanti in difesa di uomini iniqui? o chi a te imputerà lo sterminio delle nazioni create da te?
13 For there is no god, other than you, who cares for every one, to whom you have to prove that yoursentences have been just.	13 Perocché altro Dio non havvi fuori di te, che hai cura di tutti, onde dai a conoscere, come tu ingiustamente non giudichi.
14 No more could any king or despot chal enge you over those whom you have punished.	14 Né re alcuno, né principe domanderà conto davanti a te di quelli, che avrai fatto perire.
15 For, being upright yourself, you rule the universe uprightly, and hold it as incompatible with yourpower to condemn anyone who has not deserved to be punished.	15 Ma essendo tu giusto con giustizia ordini tutte le cose, e il condannare colui, che non debbe essere punito, il giudichi tu cosa aliena da tua possanza.
16 For your strength is the basis of your saving justice, and your sovereignty over al makes you lenientto al .	16 Conciossiaché la tua possanza è principio di giustizia, e perché tu se' il Signore di tutti, con tutti ti fai indulgente.
17 You show your strength when people will not believe in your absolute power, and you confound anyinsolence in those who do know it.	17 Ma la tua possanza tu dai a conoscere quando non se' creduto perfettamente potente, e gastighi la contumacia di quelli, che non ti riconoscono.
18 But you, control ing your strength, are mild in judgement, and govern us with great lenience, for youhave only to wil , and your power is there.	18 Ma tu dominatore potente giudichi senza passione, e con gran moderazione ci governi; perché pronto hai il potere quando hai il volere.
19 By acting thus, you have taught your people that the upright must be kindly to his fel ows, and youhave given your children the good hope that after sins you wil grant repentance.	19 Per tali maniere tu hai insegnato al tuo popolo come fa di mestieri, che il giusto sia ancora benigno, e i tuoi figliuoli hai avvezzati a bene operare, per ché quando li giudichi pe' lor peccati, lasci luogo alla penitenza.
20 For, if with such care and indulgence you have punished your children's enemies, though doomed todeath, and have given them time and place to be rid of their wickedness,	20 Imperocché se i nemici de' servi tuoi già rei di morte gastigasti con tanto riguardo, dando loro tempo, e comodità, perché potessero rinunziare alla malizia,
21 with what exact attention have you not judged your children, to whose ancestors, by oaths andcovenants, you made such generous promises?	21 Con quanta cautela hai tu giudicati li tuoi figliuoli, a' padri de' quali facesti le buone promesse pattuite, e giurate?
22 Thus, you instruct us, when you punish our enemies in moderation, that we should reflect on yourkindness when we judge, and, when we are judged, we should look for mercy.	22 Quando adunque noi tu correggi, molto più tu flagelli i nostri nemici, affinchè noi ripensiamo, e siamo attenti alla tua bontà, e quando si fa giudizio di noi, nella tua misericordia speriamo.
23 And this is why people leading foolish and wicked lives were tortured by you with their ownabominations;	23 Per la qual cosa eziandìi a quelli, che nella loro vita si diportarono da insensati, ed ingiusti, desti tu sommi tormenti per mezzo di quelle cose, che aveano adorate.
24 for they had strayed too far on the paths of error by taking the vilest and most despicable of animalsfor gods, being deluded like sil y little children.	24 Perocché eglino per lungo tempo camminarono traviati per la via dell'errore, credendo dei que', che sono i più vili tragli animali, e vivendo da ragazzi senza ragione.
25 So, as to children with no sense, you gave them a sentence making fools of them.	25 Per questo come a ragazzi insensati tu desti loro gastigo di scherno:
26 Those, however, who would not take warning from a mocking reproof were soon to endure asentence worthy of God.	26 Ma quelli, che agli scherni, e alle grida non si emendarono, provaron gastigo degno di Dio:
27 The creatures that made them suffer and against which they protested, those very creatures that theyhad taken for gods and by which they were punished they saw in their true light; and he whom hitherto they hadrefused to know, they realised was true God. And this is why the final condemnation fell on them.	27 Imperocché da quello stesso, che con indignazione soffrivano per mezzo di quelle cose, ch'ei credevano dei, da questo nel tempo, che erano straziati, si accorsero, e riconobbero vero Dio esser quello, che una volta negavano di conoscere; per la qual cosa piombò sopra di loro la finale condannagione.
