1 Yes, I have applied myself to all this and experienced all this to be so: that is to say, that the upright andthe wise, with their activities, are in the hands of God. We do not understand either love or hate, where we areconcerned, both of them are	1 Tutte queste cose ho io agitate nella mia mente, ed ho cercato di chiarirle: vi sono dei giusti e dei sapienti, e le loro opere sono nelle mani di Dio, eppure l'uomo non sa se sia degno di amore o di odio.
2 futile. And for all of us is reserved a common fate, for the upright and for the wicked, for the good andfor the bad; whether we are ritually pure or not, whether we offer sacrifice or not: it is the same for the good andfor the sinner, for someone who takes a vow, as for someone who fears to do so.	2 Tutto è incerto nel futuro, perchè tutto avviene ugualmente al giusto e all'empio, al buono e al cattivo, al puro e all'impuro, a chi immola vittime e a chi disprezza i sacrifizi; l'onesto e il peccatore, lo spergiuro e chi giura il vero (sono trattati ugualmente).
3 This is another evil among those occurring under the sun: that there should be the same fate foreveryone. The human heart, however, is ful of wickedness; fol y lurks in our hearts throughout our lives, until weend among the dead.	3 Questa è la cosa peggiore di quelle che avvengono sotto il sole: l'accadere a tutti le medesime cose; per questo i cuori degli uomini si riempiono di malizia, di disprezzo nel tempo della vita, e dopo sono precipitati nell'inferno.
4 But there is hope for someone stil linked to the rest of the living: better be a live dog than a dead lion.	4 Non v'è nessuno che possa viver sempre, e che ne abbia la speranza. E' meglio un cane vivo che un leone morto.
5 The living are at least aware that they are going to die, but the dead know nothing whatever. No morewages for them, since their memory is forgotten.	5 Infatti quelli che vivono sanno di dover morire; ma i morti non san più nulla, non han più nulla da guadagnare, ed anche il loro ricordo è messo in oblìo.
6 Their love, their hate, their jealousy, have perished long since, and they wil never have any further partin what goes on under the sun.	6 Anche il loro amore, odio, invidie son finiti con loro, non ne hanno più che fare con questo secolo e colle cose che si fanno sotto il sole.
7 So, eat your bread in joy, drink your wine with a glad heart, since God has already approved youractions.	7 Va dunque e mangia con gioia il tuo pane, e bevi con allegria il tuo vino, perchè ciò che fai piace a Dio.
8 At al times, dress in white and keep your head wel scented.	8 In ogni tempo sian candide le tue vesti, e non manchi l'unguento al tuo capo.
9 Spend your life with the woman you love, all the days of futile life God gives you under the sun,throughout your futile days, since this is your lot in life and in the effort you expend under the sun.	9 Godi la vita colla tua moglie diletta, per tutto il tempo della tua vita fugace, per quei giorni che ti sono dati sotto il sole, per tutto il tempo della tua vanità: questa è la tua sorte nella vita e nelle tue fatiche che ti affannano sotto il sole.
10 Whatever work you find to do, do it with al your might, for there is neither achievement, nor planning,nor science, nor wisdom in Sheol where you are going.	10 Tutto quello che puoi fare coi tuoi mezzi, fallo presto, perchè nè attività, nè pensiero, nè sapienza, nè scienza ha luogo nella regione dei morti dove tu corri.
11 Another thing I have observed under the sun: that the race is not won by the speediest, nor the battleby the champions; it is not the wise who get food, nor the intel igent wealth, nor the learned favour: chance andmischance befall them all.	11 Mi volsi a considerare altre cose e vidi come sotto il sole la corsa non è dei veloci, nè la guerra dei forti, nè il pane dei sapienti, nè le ricchezze dei dotti, nè il favore degli artisti, ma che in tutto domina il tempo e il caso.
12 We do not know when our time will come: like fish caught in the treacherous net, like birds caught inthe snare, just so are we al trapped by misfortune when it suddenly overtakes us.	12 L'uomo non conosce il suo fine, e come i pesci son presi all'amo e gli uccelli al laccio, così son presi gli uomini dal tempo cattivo, quando all'improvviso piomba loro addosso.
13 Here is another example of the wisdom I have acquired under the sun and it strikes me as important:	13 Vidi ancora sotto il sole della sapienza che io stimo grandissima:
14 There was once a smal town, with only a few inhabitants; a mighty king made war on it, laying siege toit and building great siege-works round it.	14 v'era una piccola città con poca popolazione; andò contro di essa un gran re e l'assediò, costruì dei forti all'intorno, e l'assedio fu completo.
15 But there was in that town a poverty-stricken sage who by his wisdom saved the town. No oneremembered this poor man afterwards.	15 Or in essa si trovò un uomo povero, ma saggio, il quale liberò la città col suo sapere: e nessuno poi si ricordò di quel povero uomo.
16 So I say: Wisdom is more effective than brute force, but the wisdom of a poor man is not valued: noone listens to what he has to say.	16 Ma io concludevo che la sapienza vai più della fortezza. E come mai la sapienza del povero è disprezzata, e non sono ascoltate le sue parole?
17 The calm words of the wise make themselves heard above the shouts of someone commanding anarmy of fools.	17 Le parole del sapiente si ascoltano in silenzio più che le grida di uno che regna tra gli stolti.
18 Wisdom is worth more than weapons of war, but a single sin undoes a deal of good.	18 La sapienza vai più delle armi da guerra, e chi sbaglia in una sola cosa perderà molti beni.
