1 Yes, I have applied myself to all this and experienced all this to be so: that is to say, that the upright andthe wise, with their activities, are in the hands of God. We do not understand either love or hate, where we areconcerned, both of them are	1 PERCIOCCHÈ io mi ho recate tutte queste cose al cuore, eziandio per chiarir tutto questo: come i giusti e i savi, e i fatti loro, essendo nella man di Dio, gli uomini non conoscono nè l’amore, nè l’odio: tutto è davanti a loro.
2 futile. And for all of us is reserved a common fate, for the upright and for the wicked, for the good andfor the bad; whether we are ritually pure or not, whether we offer sacrifice or not: it is the same for the good andfor the sinner, for someone who takes a vow, as for someone who fears to do so.	2 Tutte le cose avvengono simigliantemente a tutti; un medesimo avvenimento avviene al giusto, ed all’empio; al buono e puro, ed all’immondo; a chi sacrifica, ed a chi non sacrifica; quale è il buono, tale è il peccatore; tal chi giura, qual chi teme di giurare.
3 This is another evil among those occurring under the sun: that there should be the same fate foreveryone. The human heart, however, is ful of wickedness; fol y lurks in our hearts throughout our lives, until weend among the dead.	3 Quest’è una cosa molesta, fra tutte quelle che si fanno sotto il sole, che un medesimo avvenimento avviene a tutti; ed anche, che mentre i figliuoli degli uomini sono in vita, il cuor loro è pien di male, ed hanno delle follie al cuore; e dopo ciò, vanno a’ morti
4 But there is hope for someone stil linked to the rest of the living: better be a live dog than a dead lion.	4 Perciocchè, chi è che faccia eccezione? Vi è qualche speranza per tutti quelli che sono in vita; conciossiachè la condizione d’un can vivo sia migliore che quella d’un leone morto.
5 The living are at least aware that they are going to die, but the dead know nothing whatever. No morewages for them, since their memory is forgotten.	5 Perciocchè i viventi sanno che morranno; ma i morti non sanno nulla, e non vi è più alcun premio per loro; perciocchè la lor memoria è dimenticata.
6 Their love, their hate, their jealousy, have perished long since, and they wil never have any further partin what goes on under the sun.	6 Già e il loro amore, e il loro odio, e la loro invidia è perita; e non hanno giammai più parte alcuna in tutto quello che si fa sotto il sole.
7 So, eat your bread in joy, drink your wine with a glad heart, since God has already approved youractions.	7 Va’, mangia il tuo pane allegramente, e bevi il tuo vino di cuore lieto; se pure Iddio gradisce le tue opere.
8 At al times, dress in white and keep your head wel scented.	8 Sieno in ogni tempo i tuoi vestimenti bianchi; e l’olio odorifero non venga meno in sul tuo capo.
9 Spend your life with the woman you love, all the days of futile life God gives you under the sun,throughout your futile days, since this is your lot in life and in the effort you expend under the sun.	9 Godi della vita con la moglie che tu ami, tutti i giorni della vita della tua vanità, i quali Iddio ti ha dati sotto il sole, tutto il tempo della tua vanità; perciocchè questa è la tua parte nella tua vita, e il frutto della tua fatica, che tu duri sotto il sole.
10 Whatever work you find to do, do it with al your might, for there is neither achievement, nor planning,nor science, nor wisdom in Sheol where you are going.	10 Fa’ a tuo potere tutto quello che avrai modo di fare; perciocchè sotterra, ove tu vai, non vi è nè opera, nè ragione, nè conoscimento, nè sapienza alcuna
11 Another thing I have observed under the sun: that the race is not won by the speediest, nor the battleby the champions; it is not the wise who get food, nor the intel igent wealth, nor the learned favour: chance andmischance befall them all.	11 DI nuovo, io ho veduto sotto il sole, che il correre non è in poter de’ leggieri, nè il far la guerra in poter de’ prodi, nè l’aver del pane in poter de’ savi, nè l’acquistar ricchezze in poter de’ prudenti, nè d’essere in grazia in poter degl’intendenti; conciossiachè ad essi tutti avvengano tempi e casi.
12 We do not know when our time will come: like fish caught in the treacherous net, like birds caught inthe snare, just so are we al trapped by misfortune when it suddenly overtakes us.	12 Perciocchè l’uomo non pur conosce il suo tempo. Come i pesci, che son presi con la mala rete; e come gli uccelli, che son colti col laccio; così sono allacciati i figliuoli degli uomini, al tempo dell’avversità, quando cade loro di subito addosso
13 Here is another example of the wisdom I have acquired under the sun and it strikes me as important:	13 Pure ancora ho veduta questa sapienza sotto il sole, che mi è paruta grande:
14 There was once a smal town, with only a few inhabitants; a mighty king made war on it, laying siege toit and building great siege-works round it.	14 vi era una piccola città con pochi uomini dentro; ed un gran re venne contro ad essa, e l’intorniò, e fece di gran bastie contro ad essa;
15 But there was in that town a poverty-stricken sage who by his wisdom saved the town. No oneremembered this poor man afterwards.	15 e in essa si trovò un povero uomo savio, il qual liberò la città con la sua sapienza, benchè niuno si ricordasse di quel povero uomo.
16 So I say: Wisdom is more effective than brute force, but the wisdom of a poor man is not valued: noone listens to what he has to say.	16 Allora io dissi: Meglio val sapienza che forza; benchè la sapienza del povero sia sprezzata, e che le sue parole non sieno ascoltate.
17 The calm words of the wise make themselves heard above the shouts of someone commanding anarmy of fools.	17 Le parole de’ savi devono esser più quietamente ascoltate, che la grida d’un signore fra gli stolti.
18 Wisdom is worth more than weapons of war, but a single sin undoes a deal of good.	18 La sapienza val meglio che gli strumenti bellici; ma un sol peccatore fa perire un gran bene
