NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Yes, I have applied myself to all this and experienced all this to be so: that is to say, that the upright andthe wise, with their activities, are in the hands of God. We do not understand either love or hate, where we areconcerned, both of them are	1 Ho riflettuto su tutto ciò, e sono arrivato alla conclusione che i giusti, i sapienti e le loro azioni sono nelle mani di Dio. Gli uomini non conoscono nemmeno l'amore e l'odio; per quanto tutto si svolga davanti a loro.
2 futile. And for all of us is reserved a common fate, for the upright and for the wicked, for the good andfor the bad; whether we are ritually pure or not, whether we offer sacrifice or not: it is the same for the good andfor the sinner, for someone who takes a vow, as for someone who fears to do so.	2 Una stessa è la sorte che tocca a tutti, al giusto e all'empio, al buono e al cattivo, al puro e all'impuro, a chi sacrifica e a chi non sacrifica. Come il buono, così il peccatore, come chi giura, così chi teme di giurare.
3 This is another evil among those occurring under the sun: that there should be the same fate foreveryone. The human heart, however, is ful of wickedness; fol y lurks in our hearts throughout our lives, until weend among the dead.	3 Questo male investe tutto ciò che si fa sotto il sole: la stessa sorte tocca a tutti e, per di più, il cuore dell'uomo è pieno di male. La follia è nel suo cuore durante la vita; e dopo: via, nel soggiorno dei morti.
4 But there is hope for someone stil linked to the rest of the living: better be a live dog than a dead lion.	4 Finché uno è vivo, c'è speranza, perché sta meglio un cane vivo che un leone morto.
5 The living are at least aware that they are going to die, but the dead know nothing whatever. No morewages for them, since their memory is forgotten.	5 Infatti i vivi sanno che devono morire, ma i morti non sanno nulla; per loro non c'è più guadagno; il loro ricordo è andato nell'oblio.
6 Their love, their hate, their jealousy, have perished long since, and they wil never have any further partin what goes on under the sun.	6 Il loro amore, il loro odio, la loro ambizione, tutto ormai è scomparso. Non hanno ormai più parte alcuna con il mondo, con tutto ciò che si fa sotto il sole.
7 So, eat your bread in joy, drink your wine with a glad heart, since God has already approved youractions.	7 E allora, via, mangia nella gioia il tuo pane e bevi di buon animo il tuo vino, ché, con questo, Dio ti è già stato benigno.
8 At al times, dress in white and keep your head wel scented.	8 In ogni tempo siano candide le tue vesti, né manchi l'olio sopra il tuo capo.
9 Spend your life with the woman you love, all the days of futile life God gives you under the sun,throughout your futile days, since this is your lot in life and in the effort you expend under the sun.	9 Godi la vita con la donna che ami, giorno per giorno, durante la vita vana che ti è stata data sotto il sole. Ché questo è ciò che solo ti spetta nella vita e in tutta la fatica nella quale ti affatichi sotto il sole.
10 Whatever work you find to do, do it with al your might, for there is neither achievement, nor planning,nor science, nor wisdom in Sheol where you are going.	10 Tutto ciò che fai, fallo finché hai forza, perché non c'è né azione né pensiero, né scienza né sapienza, negli inferi dove tu stai andando.
11 Another thing I have observed under the sun: that the race is not won by the speediest, nor the battleby the champions; it is not the wise who get food, nor the intel igent wealth, nor the learned favour: chance andmischance befall them all.	11 Ho scoperto un'altra cosa sotto il sole: la corsa non la vince chi è veloce, né la battaglia la vincono i più forti. Non è ai sapienti che tocca il pane, né agli abili le ricchezze e neanche agli accorti il favore, perché a tutti tocca secondo il tempo e il caso.
12 We do not know when our time will come: like fish caught in the treacherous net, like birds caught inthe snare, just so are we al trapped by misfortune when it suddenly overtakes us.	12 E per di più, l'uomo non conosce il giorno della sua morte: è come i pesci che si acchiappano con la rete fatale, è come gli uccelli che si acchiappano col laccio. Allo stesso modo è acchiappato anche l'uomo in un malo giorno che gli piomba addosso all'improvviso.
13 Here is another example of the wisdom I have acquired under the sun and it strikes me as important:	13 Ho visto anche quest'altro esempio di sapienza sotto il sole e per me ha molto valore:
14 There was once a smal town, with only a few inhabitants; a mighty king made war on it, laying siege toit and building great siege-works round it.	14 c'era una piccola città con pochi abitanti e un grande re venne contro di essa. L'assediò e costruì contro di essa grandi fortificazioni.
15 But there was in that town a poverty-stricken sage who by his wisdom saved the town. No oneremembered this poor man afterwards.	15 In essa si trovò un uomo di umile origine, ma sapiente, che con la sua sapienza salvò la città. Eppure nessuno ha più ricordato quell'uomo umile.
16 So I say: Wisdom is more effective than brute force, but the wisdom of a poor man is not valued: noone listens to what he has to say.	16 Ho concluso allora che la sapienza vale più della forza, ma che la sapienza dell'umile è disprezzata e le sue parole non sono ascoltate.
17 The calm words of the wise make themselves heard above the shouts of someone commanding anarmy of fools.	17 Le parole dei sapienti pronunciate con calma si capiscono meglio degli urli di un potente che parla in mezzo agli stolti.
18 Wisdom is worth more than weapons of war, but a single sin undoes a deal of good.	18 Vale più la sapienza che gli strumenti da guerra, ma un solo sbaglio può far perire un gran bene.
